Hi all, well here is the 'official' thread for this summer's reading challenge/programme. The Summer Reading Challenge web page can be found hereFor those of you new to it, what we do is each pick a list of up to 10 books to read over the summer. Our aim is to read all 10, or as many as possible. When we've read each book we come on here and tell the others what we think. There will also be a web-page you can look at to see everyone's progress. Books will be awarded smiley, frowney or neutral faces and participants will win rosettes for numbers of books read. RULES: The challenge runs from 1st July to September You may choose up to 10 books and if possible from the categories below: A 'NEW' PONY STORY (PUBLISHED IN 2012/2013) AN OLD CLASSIC A FANTASY PONY STORY AN ADULT HORSE STORY A PONY STORY PUBLISHED IN A COUNTRY OTHER THAN YOUR OWN PLUS 5 OTHERS OF YOUR CHOICE, HORSY OR NON-HORSY When you have chosen your books post your list here. Provisional lists can be posted and changed as many times as you like up until July 1st then you must choose your finished list and stick with it! Let us know when you have read each book and give a short summary (no spoilers) and what you thought of each book - or a longer review if you would like. We can also note other books which have led us astray from our task! But not too much detail. Please use the 'what's everyone reading' thread to discuss books that aren't on your lists. These rules are more guidelines than anything set in stone. If you really can't find books which fulfill the various categories above then just pick something else. But please do have a try.

A bit floaty at the moment, but hope to get list together soon. Main aim will be to read books others have recommended to me on here. Old classic will be Katerfelto by Whyte Melville - its the much done "catching wild stallion in wilderness" plot, this time on 18th century Exmoor "Fantasy" was giving me a headache then I turned up this while looking for something else:- www.ledbythegrey.com/index.php

If anyone is looking for a new and/or adult book for their list, and can get them, Karen McGoldrick's The Dressage Chronicles (2 books out so far) are really enjoyable IMO. Second one is new (just came out last month); first came out in 2011. Protagonist is a college grad who just has to give her dream of Grand Prix dressage a shot -- so she takes a job as a working student/groom with a prominent dressage rider and trainer. Lotsa day-to-day grooming/show prep of the horses, personality dynamics, and even a fair bit of dressage training and showing discussed or taking place. Author is a dressage rider and trainer herself, and all the horsey detail is accurate, so that's a big plus for sticklers like me.
Nothing profound here but absorbing if you like the type of pony book that focuses on the training of the horses. Only a little actual showing is depicted, but tons on building the rider-mount relationship, training philosophies, etc. Plus the stress and poverty of being a working student, but finding the world-class training worth the day-to-day grind.

Its not a cheat Kunuma, you can read books you have read before, they don't have to be new.
My tentative (and v. short) list so far
FANTASY - The Black Loch by Pat Leitch NEW - Joe and the Lightning Pony by Victoria Eveleigh OTHER COUNTRY (USA) Diving Horse by Patsey Gray OTHERS - The Cats of Winkle Bay by Judith Berrisford, The House by the Marsh by Mabel Esther Allen (both non-pony)
Not sure what I'll choose for classic or adult - anyone got any suggestions for good adult ones that I haven't read?

Claire, have you read any Rita Mae Brown? You might like Outfoxed, the first in her "Sister" MFH series (don't worry, only people get killed in her books!) or the time slip Riding Shotgun. I really enjoyed the bio of Snowman, the showjumper, in Eighty-Dollar Champion, which I read as my adult title last year. One that's in my tbr pile, an author that's popular and someone recommended to me, Laura Crum. The first book in her Gail McCarthy mystery series, Cutter, is available on Kindle very cheap...£0.77 www.amazon.co.uk/Cutter-Gail-McCarthy-Mystery-ebook/dp/B0071F5BSS/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1371430022&sr=1-1&keywords=cutter+laura+crum

Thanks for the suggestions susan. I have read Outfoxed which I quite enjoyed, tho not quite enough to make me hunt down all the other titles (So many books to buy not enough money!) The Laura Crum ones sounds promising - I'll go and have a look at that.

Claire/Trixie....there was no "no non-fiction" rule last year, (I read the bio of Snowman!), did that change? Not sure why it would...a book is a book, after all. I don't really read a lot of non-fiction, (none on my list this year) but for those who do, I say go for it!

btw, re Brat Farrar, I remember liking it, though it has been some years now....I read it after I'd seen a BBC adaptation of it (also pretty good)
