Finally sorted my list out. A few re-reads as I don't have that many new books to read at the moment
1. Romney Marsh Companion by Brian Parks as a non horsey one. 2. Horse from the Black Loch as the fantasy one. 3. Tan and Tarmac by Gillian Baxter 4. Six Cousins Again by Enid Blyton 5. The First Rosette by CPT 6. Old classic Black Beauty. 7. New book Joe and the Hidden Horseshoe by Victoria Eveleigh 8. Re-read Rebel Pony by Patricia Leitch. Curious to see if I like this on a second reading! 9. Another re-read Pony Island by Mary Gervaise 10. Punchbowl Harvest by Monica Edwards

Claire/Trixie....there was no "no non-fiction" rule last year, (I read the bio of Snowman!), did that change? Not sure why it would...a book is a book, after all. I don't really read a lot of non-fiction, (none on my list this year) but for those who do, I say go for it! Just noticed this post. I did think it was all fiction last year, I had forgotten about Snowman. Well altho fiction is really our thing on the website/forum, I do now agree with susan that we may as well include non-fcition titles. After all we are including non-pony books, which doesn't exactly relate to the website. So if you really want a non-fic title then please feel free to add one. Don't forget to get your finalised lists in by the end of the month. I'll get the smilies ready! ;D

I noticed when I flipped through the 2012 thread looking for ideas that there was a decent amount of non-fiction: aside from my Snowman, there was Riding With Simon by Mona Sandler, Horseman: Memories of Capt. J.H. Marshall and Backyard Pony by Frederick Devereux!
I'm still fiddling with my list too...trying to decide if I want to risk my Aussie book not arriving in time and if I want to swap out one hardcover for an ebook......decisions, decisions!

Mine too, which is why I was refreshing it! I'd forgotten that the reason I never finished was that I got totally stuck on Island of Horses, which just didn't grab me for some reason. Never did finish it, and didn't put it aside to at least go on to the Three Jays book

I’ve finally decided which books to have on my list. I’m aiming for cultural diversity, but some of the links are tenuous! A 'NEW' PONY STORY (PUBLISHED IN 2012/2013) 1. The One Dollar Horse – Lauren St John (Rhodesia) AN OLD CLASSIC 2. Foal of the Fjords – Primrose Cumming (Norway) A FANTASY PONY STORY 3. The Winged Colt of Casa Mia – Betsy Byars (USA) AN ADULT HORSE STORY 4. Whip Hand – Dick Francis A PONY STORY PUBLISHED IN A COUNTRY OTHER THAN YOUR OWN 5. Horsepower – Patsey Gray (USA) 6. Afraid to Ride – C. W. Anderson (USA) to compare with… 7. Afraid to Ride – Patricia Leitch 8. The Boundary Riders – Joan Phipson (Australia) 9. Susannah of the Mounties – Muriel Denison (Canada) 10. The Good Master – Kate Seredy (Hungary)

Ponymad Booklovers 2013 Summer Reading List
1. & 2. Maggie Dana's Racing into Trouble and Riding for the Stars. (Timber Ridge Riders 2 & 3)
3. & 4. NEW: Sharon Siamon's Runaway Dreams and Mystery Returns (Wild Horse Creek Series) [Barnes & Noble was the only seller that had the last two in this series for quite a while, but I see amazon now has them, too.]
4. CLASSIC: I'm going to follow Rosie's lead and do Anna Sewell's Black Beauty. I'm sure the version I had as a child was abridged, so I want to find an unabridged one.
5. ADULT : Rita Mae Brown's Fox Tracks. (also NEW)
6. FANTASY: (well, supernatural): Echo of Hooves by Eleanor Jones
7. NONFICTION: Melyni Worth's Horse Nutrition Handbook.
8. OTHER COUNTRY: Malin Stehn's Working Like a Horse (Humleby Farm series).
9. John Pizzarelli's World on a String musical bio. Just about my favorite musician, and the guy I tease my husband about, pretending (or am I??!!) to have a fan-girl crush on him. An amazing musician with a warm and friendly persona.
10. The Ghost Stories of Ambrose Bierce. There are several collections of his ghost and horror stories; I have an anthology from Start Publishing. It is missing one of my favorite stories of his, The Moonlit Road, but I know I have that one in another anthology, likely somewhere in my attic -- an appropriate place for ghost stories, I guess! I like this one because of the vividness of the scene of encountering the ghost in the (you guessed it!) moonlit road. I can imagine that moment so clearly! And since I am fairly frequently on deserted country roads at night I can easily give myself the creeps with this image! Of course, this story is readily available on the internet, being in the public domain -- do look it up if you like ghost stories. It is really quite poignant overall, though, not horrifying.

Claire, if we have our lists finalized by end of day Saturday (tomorrow), will that be time enough? I'm still waiting on my book from Australia! If it doesn't come in tomorrow's post, I'll have to swap it out

Well done to all who have their finalised lists done! (You're doing better than me) Tintin some great books on there - a mouth watering list! Tamzin what a great idea to choose books from around the world!
Susan (and all who haven't got them done yet) try and get them in by Sunday as I plan to set up the webpage on Sunday evening so it can go live on 1st July. But if there are any problems don't worry too much I can delay it a day or 2. Susan just stick that book on I can change it later if needs be. I don't mind changing something in that circumstance, its just chopping and changing everyone's books last year was taking up too much time!
Still having a dilemma over the classic book and adult book to choose. Classic is between a PT book (possibly The Horse Sale), Pony Jobs for Jill and Jackie Won a Pony. Adult - havent decided whether to do a re-read of the Sid Halley books, try one of those suggested by people on here or do the Kit Ehrman one on my ebook TBR list. I am tending towards Sid or Kit as this will save money!

Claire, I think the Kit Ehrman books are similar to Sid Halley/most of Dick Francis -- very contemporary hero who still behaves extraordinarily courageously in a quiet way. And like Francis, poor hero has to take a pretty significant beating in just about every book! So either way, getting a similar book, I think.
tintin, sorry to be picky, but I believe you are looking at Sue-Elaine Draws a Horse, not Sue Ellen painting -- but an excellent book that I finally read a few months ago after wanting to buy it for years.

Thanks Claire! I really wanted to do Behind the Barricade, bought it just for the challenge. I know the rule was "country other than your own", but I read so much US and UK that it doesn't actually FEEL like a change to me! Even if it doesn't come till August, I can just read it last.
I'm only debating one change right now.....will peruse the tbr pile tonight and finalize tomorrow morning!

Thanks for the Kit Ehrman info Rally I think I may go with that one. (I'm defo going to hunt down Brat Farrar soon tho - has it got any horse stuff in it anyone as I see one copy has a horse on the front)

rally gave the Kit Ehrman info, Claire...though I do have the second in the series in my challenge list! I read the first years ago and remember it as being decent, but not up to the standard of Lyndon Stacey (and Dick Francis in class of own).
One other consideration might be Martha Grimes' The Grave Maurice, which is totally horse-centric.
Brat Farrar has horse content, but isn't totally a horse book. I remember liking it (but then I liked all the Tey books I read).

Almost forgot, my list is set, and I'm stickin' with it!
I found that the library had Dandi Daley McKall's Edgar Award winning book The Silence of Murder as an ebook, so I put a reserve on it. Someone has it out now, but I'm next on list, so it will be a maximum of two weeks before it's mine....have been meaning to read it for a while now! (non-pony book by a pony-book author).

Apologies rally and susan got the posts mixed up - will rectify!
I went through a phase of reading Martha Grimes a few years ago but then inexplicably completely lost interest in the books.

I did the same.....they got soooo much alike and I just didn't care anymore, though I'd enjoyed the earlier titles in the series. The Grave Maurice doesn't read like a series entry for some weird reason....I enjoyed it, though it was heartbreaking too. If you read Amazon reviews, you'll see that people complained about the horsey content and the fact that it didn't fit with the series....which was what I liked about it!

I have nearly completed my list, just one short of my final list! Will decide over the weekend. Pity we're not allowed non fiction books because it would make my life easier.

garej, I'm pretty sure non fiction is quite okay! I have one on my list, and susan (and maybe others) had nonfiction last year. Oh, and Claire, I didn't mean to imply the Kit Ehrman books are necessarily as good as Francis. Still, they are pretty darn good for contemporary fiction and share a great many broad similarities -- fast moving, very courageous modern hero, like I said the hero is challenged both in terms of his moral fiber and in terms of his physical courage, etc. I've read the first two Ehrman books and they are quite good.

Thanks folks the migraine is staying at bay at the moment so have ventured back on the computer and I should have the webpage up and running by tomorrow.
Trixiepony, just a quick question, what sort of book is Trouble with Linda (pony, non-pony, fic, non-fic, etc) cos I can't find any info about it?
Haffy - if you are around - are you joining in this year?
Anyone else who hasn't got their final lists in please do so ASAP, although if you are a day or 2 late it won't be too problematic as I can just pop you on the end!
