Oh just one more thing. I was wondering when people mention what smilies they want for their books please could you highlight the book in question and the smiley rating (happy, frowny, etc) in bold. This will make it easier for me to spot them within each post and less likely to miss any. Ta folks x

Claire - I'm feeling a bit thick today (lack of sleep) and I somehow missed this question from my earlier post. Did I dream it, or did you post a poll with faces and star ratings for us to choose for the books in the Summer Reading Challenge? I can't find it. Thanks.

Sorry to hear your not feeling well Tamzin. I didn't have a poll. You just need to tell me on here what sort of smiley to award each book. Perhaps you are thinking of the dedicated web page which has everyone's book lists and smilies, etc, on. If so here's the link again: summerreadingchallenge.ponymadbooklovers.co.uk/Don't forget to bookmark this folks. If anyone forgets to bookmark it and can't find the link at any time, just go to the opening post of this thread which has a link to it. Oh and congrats to Rally who is the first one to win a yellow rosette for 3 books completed!

Well done Rally Just finished Joe and the Hidden Horseshoe. I'm going to give this a smiley smiley although I have to say I didn't enjoy it as much as Midnight on Lundy.

I quite liked One Dollar horse Claire (despite it's pink page ends), so yeah maybe you won't! But hey we both like Black Loch so you never know.
I'm still being stubborn about going in those start stalls, rally will be be past the post at this rate...must find time to start reading and soon.

I am going to work down my list so that I won't have an excuse for putting any off. I've read my first book: Joe and the Hidden Horseshoe. A smiley face for this please. I enjoyed it. I will add more comments on the review thread. Well done Rallycairn!

Thanks but I have hit a stall! Guess I'm a sprinter! Part of the reason I did so well is Monday I was at the vet's getting my cockatiel worked in to be seen, and I was able to read a bit on the Bierce anthology, which didn't require extended attention. It looks like Opal is doing better, thank goodness. She is 10 and that used to be about as old as the average tame 'tiel lived, but now 15-20 is becoming more common and I want her to be around that long! She is very sweet.
Now, I haven't read a page yesterday or so far today! Didn't even read in bed last night, just shut off the light!

Haha loving all the racing metaphors here ;D Get well soon Opal. Have you any pics of her Rallycairn for the pets thread. Would love to see her. Thanks for the list Brumby. Well done on getting it together so quickly when the rest of us have had a month to hum and haw about what to put on ours Is the Horse Dancer the one by JoJo Moyes? You have a few on the list which we have reviews for so feel free to add further comments and vote for them on the respective threads. I'll get your list added to the web page and update any smilies tonight. I'm plodding along at the back of the field at the mo as have had a much busier than usual week. Just finished Black Loch - may do a full review for this - and will start A Horse for the Holidays next.

Yes Claire Horse Dancer is by JoJo Moyes am about half way through, took me a while to get into it but now can't put it down. Chose Black Loch cause people seemed to either love or hate so thought I would find out for myself. I had heaps to choose from as I have been on a bit of a buying frenzy and can't keep up with the reading!

finished A Girl Called Bob and a Horse Called Yoki - smiley please! This is what I'd call a not-quite-a-pony book.....it's the story of an African American girl living with her mother in St. Louis while her father is off fighting in WWII. She loves animals, and always stops by the local grocers to pat and give treats to the delivery horse, Yoki. Unfortunately, when the elderly owner of the store becomes quite ill, his truly nasty nephew takes over and immediatly makes arrangements to have the milk run done by the local iceman (who has his own delivery horse) and for Yoki to go to the slaughterhouse Of course Bob, (short for Barbara Ann) can't allow that to happen, so she enlists help from a local boy and they plan to steal Yoki in order to save his life. But really, where can you hide a horse (a big one!) in the middle of a city? They get some unexpected help from the eccentric lady landlord and things do work out well. Running alongside this is Bob's dilemma about being baptized (which children of her faith choose to do, it's not simply done to them at birth)....should she or shouldn't she? She's more than a little worried about being good enough....after all, she's stealing a horse! But it's right to do that, isn't it? That nasty nephew keeps talking about sending the thief to jail, so maybe she's wrong. That doesn't change her mind a bit about saving Yoki, so maybe she's just bad! What's a girl to do? The details abound about living through WWII as a child....collections for everything, ration books, a Dad away who you can't present dilemmas to, because you only want to send him happy letters. And stars in windows. Unfortunately, Bob's best friend gets the worst news about her dad, and the star in her window is gold now. A lovely slim novel with unexpected depth, but not a whole lot of horse content, but recommended as a glimpse into another era and life. Not too difficult to find in hardcover, though it tends to be ex-library, it was also published in paperback under the title of Taking Care of Yoki.

Rally, I hope Opal gets better soon!
brumby....re the "bold" option....I'm guessing that you're just typing in the box at the bottom of the thread? It's really the quick reply box, and doesn't give you any options. If you click the "reply" button that's on the LAST POST on the thread, it will take you to another window with many more options: bold, italic, strikethrough, the quote button, etc...and all the smiley icons!
It's not very intuitive that you should click that one, especially if you're really replying to a post several posts before the last, but it doesn't actually matter at all....your post will just go at the end of the thread either way.
I'm supposed to be cleaning today (day off, friends coming over tomorrow), so I expect I'll get a lot of reading done....anything to delay/avoid cleaning! ;D ;D ;D

Wow at all these people who have finished a book already. I am still on my first (Jane Badger's Heroines on Horseback) though admittedly it's quite a lengthy book with in excess of 100 pages.

Good point re pages, garej...and HoH is kind of oversize pages too. Just for kicks, I went back to my post and stuck page counts on my books. Reading No Mistaking Corker, enjoying so far.....not a cutesy toddler in site! (That's what put me off Wish for a Pony, unfortunately). And...erm....as predicted, haven't picked up a dust cloth or got the vacuum out of the cupboard yet....I'm envisioning an early rise and whirling-dervish cleaning session tomorrow

Susan - Bob and Yoki sounds like just the sort of book I'd love. The title has always made me smile now I just gonna have to hunt a copy down! Thanks for explaining about the bold/different sorts of reply for Tamzin. I don't think I've ever used the quick reply box before. TBH it was a while before I even noticed it was there!
Thanks to the weather nearly finished my 2nd book, A Horse for the Holidays (American title Last Summer to Ride). Finished my work and went for a walk to the abbey ruins and read about half of it sitting on the grass there. Blissful! Then read a bit more in my garden with the cats enjoying the sun too. Forgot how much I loved this book as haven't read it for ages. Glad I picked this one as my classic. Not surprisingly I am awarding myself a smiley face for it.
Oh just a quickie re. The Black Loch, don't think I've ever noticed it before when i've read the book but Kay refers to her friend Jacky Munro from the riding school who is the heroine of another Leitch book, Jump to the Top!

And...erm....as predicted, haven't picked up a dust cloth or got the vacuum out of the cupboard yet....I'm envisioning an early rise and whirling-dervish cleaning session tomorrow LOL we expected some friends over on Thursday and planned to clean the house, but did a quick brush-up on the downstairs rooms only. What with housework and Wimbledon, I'm not managing enough reading. I don't normally watch much tennis, but all the new players and the exciting play had me glued to the set for the quarter and semi finals. Claire - I liked the sound of the Yoki book too (family type story, problems to solve, some pony/horse content) and as soon as I read Susan's post I bought a copy. Reminded me a bit of "Meet the Malones" by Lenora Mattingly Weber (republished by Image Cascade, but also available on Kindle). Susan - Would I be right in guessing that this is another one you've read and liked?

"Not hating it" -- and a rousing recommendation from rosie ! For a Patricia Leitch book it is! ;D Lol I hate housework too - gets in the way of good stuff like reading and eating! Sorry I didn't get round to updating the web page last night. Will defo get it done tonight! Also will add a few words about my 2nd book which I just finished. Now to decide what next - those 2 were easy as I'd read them before and knew I'd like 'em.

Finished No Mistaking Corker, smiley please!
It was implausible to say the least (how many Corker look alikes can one girl literally fall over?), and there was some squabbling, but it was enjoyable anyway. I've got the Collins Pony Library edition of Black Hunting Whip, which I figure I'll pick up in the fall.
For now, I've got a couple of hours to give this apartment a lick and a promise, shower and dress....eek!
Figuring to move on to Quest for a Pony tomorrow, I doubt I'll get any reading at all done today.
almost forgot, tamzin, yes I did enjoy several of the Malone series, and recently aquired one of her early non-series books, Rocking Chair Ranch, which I haven't read yet. So many books, so little time!

SMILEY for MYSTERY RETURNS by SHARON SIAMON. Better than Runaway Dreams, which was a slightly-less good entry in the series.
One more short-ish one, the Malin Stehn. I'm still wanting breezy, quick stuff so I'll probably read that one today.

Well, more promise than lick, but the most frightening dust bunnies have been evicted. "Dress" ran to shorts and a t-shirt, because it is essentially a sauna outside (as it has been for WEEKS).... all with 15 minutes to spare!

25C here and its just right for me. NO complaining about the heat please from fellow Brits after the foul spring we've had and last year's none-summer, just be grateful we are getting some decent weather for a change! (If you feel like complaining go and have a look at the 'moan about the weather' thread to refresh your memories about how bloomin awful its been) Well I finished Horse for the Hols today. Loved it. Its everything that a traditional horse story should be. The main character is sympathetic, the day to day running of the riding school is realistic. Her goal too is realistic, not to win Badminton but just to ride the best horse in the stables at a local One Day Event. Despite culminating in the One day Event, its not really a competition story. Its more a riding school story - but also about how Janet is being forced from the career with horses she really wants into working in an office, through her mother and society as a whole. I must say re-reading as an adult I don't find the issue as cut and dried as a did as a kid. Altho I certainly didn't approve of Jill (in Pony Jobs) being told to stop messing about with ponies and grow up, I did sympathise with what Janets mother was saying about being at the bottom of the pile in the horse world, slaving away as a groom was not rewarding. The mother did say that if Janet had a chance at becoming a top rider it would be different so she wasn't against horses as a career per se. To someone whom it actually happened to, (and most of us are in a similar boat) getting a 'proper' job instead of a job with horses is not actually the fate worse than death Janet makes it out to be. But even tho you know this as an adult you still feel terribly sorry for how Janet is being propelled into a life she doesn't want. One of PL's best and I am sure even rosie would give this one at least a neutral face! Oh one last thing - Tintin if you ever read this one look out for another Miss Walker who is just a little bit different to your beloved character!
