We've got more snow forecast for this Thursday and again on Monday...waaah Re the coping...it really depends on where in the country you are....Massachusetts generally trudges on (though this February is really showing the advanced age of our public transit), while Washington DC shuts down with only a few inches on the ground. It's generally down to fiscal issues....it doesn't make sense to invest a ton of money in snow removal equipment/sand/salt etc. if you typically only get one bad winter in a decade...it would be throwing money away that you could better spend elsewhere. I'm guessing that's the case in the UK too.

I'm guessing that's the case in the UK too. Nope its just incompetence It wouldn't be so bad if it was just heavy snow that brought things to a halt but a minor sprinkling seems to cause chaos. Anyhow we still haven't got any more tho some forecast for tonight and tomorrow. Its supposedly warming up for the weekend could even reach the dizzy heights of 5C lol. Hopefully none on Friday cos I will be travelling by train and there's bound to be delays if any snow about. Keep warm everyone (in the Northern Hemisphere at least)

Wish I could get sum off your snow to dump on our fire, it's spooky close, not coming right for us but with the wind changing it may send it our way, our streets smoky, and the cars get ash on them if there out side.

Crikey trixiepony that sounds a bit scary! Hope you stay safe. Makes us moaning about a few inches of snow sounds a bit feeble

Wow....that is really scary Trixiepony....hope they get it put out soon. The weather patterns have been so horrible in recent years....some places, like California and Australia, getting no rain/snow at all, others getting deluged. If you want some Boston snow, some lunatic comedian enterprising character has set up a site where you can buy some. shipsnowyo.com/

Haha at that website. Haven't quite worked out if its real or not !!
Our weather has been freaky too. We must have had the warmest autumn ever last year I think it was 20C plus one day in November in southern UK. I remember sitting on a bench outside with just a short sleeved tee shirt on - normally its layers, gloves and scarves by then.

Boston is basically closed. www.wcvb.com/weather/mbta-shuts-down-trolleys-trains-amid-record-snow/31181814The term "Snowmageddon" is being bandied about

Another moan, I'm afraid (I think I've used my ration for the winter, but that's just the way it's going)....we had another 16" this weekend, bringing the total for the winter to just shy of 8 feet (95")...the worst of it is that it's all still on the ground. Unlike other winters where we've had lots of snowstorms, but with some melting between storms, this year the time between the storms has been bitter cold...as it is today. Currently -17.78C.
Yes, you read that right.....8 feet of snow on the ground, 17 below zero (celcius).
Another 3 to 6 inches coming in tomorrow. There are NO words!

Susan has had horrific weather this year, for sure. We got almost 6" of snow Monday the 16th. It was very powdery that day, and the horses stayed out. Also, I have experienced snowstorms like that before, even up to 11", but never have I lived through having that much snow combined with days and days of subfreezing temperatures all day long. So my pastures are still sheets of ice, and have been since Monday night. I've been letting the horses out one at a time in an area we cleared in front of the barn, cleaning their stalls and letting them stretch their legs, and putting them back in. It is so icy, crusty, and slippery. If it had stayed powdery I wouldn't have worried, but I don't see turning them out in their fields in this, and they are not used to it at all. I don't know how he did it or if it is related to the snow/ice, though I suspect it was, but one of our Cairns tore his ACL despite us also trying to keep the dogs safe and restrict them to cleared areas. He will need to see a vet surgeon. Funny, I am getting used to the temps in the teens and single digits Fahrenheit, but I do not like all this icy snow. Not that I have had anything like Susan -- Susan, do you have horses currently? Do you turn them out in icy snow, do you plow a paddock, or how do you handle horses with that much snow? I see our neighbors have not turned theirs out, either, but I worry about mine tying up or colicking or even developing ulcers stuck inside so much. Mine are used to a lot of turnout. I've added more flax (which I recently read helps with ulcers as well as being a good source of omega fatty acids), we are making lots of warm water "mashes" out of at least one meal a day for them (not true bran mashes, just soaking their normal rations in warm water to help keep them hydrated), and I even added Quietex to everyone's morning feed, and they are staying pretty mellow. We are supposed to get sleet turning to rain today that should melt the icy snow, but then will leave a muddy mess, I'm sure.

Sounds horrid Rallycairn. And sorry to hear about your little dog. We had a winter like that about 5 years ago, snow for about 5 months in Yorkshire! And sub zero temps for weeks on ends - when it got up to about minus 2 it was like a heatwave. You do sort of get used to the temperatures as you say. I didn't have horses at the time but I can imagine how hard it is to look after them in that sort of weather. Hope you all over there get some warmer weather soon to wash it all away.

What a lot of hard work and worry Rallycairn. Sounds like you are doing all you can to keep the horses happy and healthy which can't be easy. Hope your Cairn isn't too badly injured and recovers soon.

Thank you so much for all your kind words! Really I have had nothing compared to Susan, it's just that in my region it is a very rare event to have this much snow, and then to have it stay around for more than 1-2 days is unique in my lifetime. We just have never faced this situation before and are not set up to cope with it.
Woke up this morning to the snow still there ... ugh. Didn't get enough rain to really wash it away.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog, Rally....hope the op goes well...ACLs are such stinkers to heal The ice that's been hitting the south has been really nasty....bad anywhere, and worse when you're not equipped to deal with it....'cause who buys equipment for a winter that happens once in a century! Up here, most places that stable horses also have indoor riding rings, because really, where else are you going to ride 5 to 6 months of the year? They use them for turnout when it's too bad to use fields...not ideal, but better than nothing. Re horses, no I haven't any....right now I'm thinking "thank God", because it hasn't been good around here....there have been 3 roof collapses in barns in Massachusetts alone this month, with two horses killed. The sheer weight of the snow has caused collapses in many houses and businesses, but of course barns, with their broad surfaces, are particularly vulnerable...and of course the horses can't exactly run for the exit when they hear creaking Things have gone from bad, to worse in the last couple of weeks....the deep freeze and snowpack on roofs have caused roof and even whole building collapses. People have been severely injured, one killed, trying to clear snow from their roofs. Falling icicles (and don't think little dinky things on your Christmas tree, think multi-story icicles) have punctured gas lines causing explosions at a hospital and a nursing facility (no injuries, thank goodness). At least three people have been killed walking home from work, because most towns haven't cleared the sidewalks of snow, so there is nowhere to walk but in the street with the traffic. Ok in the morning, when it's light out, but deadly at night. Sorry to be such a downer....it's really been the worst winter of my life. 100" of snow in the space of a month, and the cold worse than anything I can remember...the temperature tomorrow morning when I will leave home is forecast to be -7f (that's -21.67c). That's the actual temperature, not the windchill. With the windchill, it will be -17f (-27.22c).

Crikey Trixie hope it stays away! You aren't having a good time of it lately.
I hardly dare moan about weather now after hearing about Triie's fires and Susan and Rally's snow, but I will have a little one. Snowing and blowing a gale here. Horrid.

Eeek...so sorry to hear about the new fire, Trixie....hope they get it under control soon! Are you in an area that is really drought stricken? I know a lot of Australia has had that problem in recent years. California is having it too, but their fire season hasn't started yet. (Just typing that phrase "fire season" is horrifying....I can't imagine what living it must be like). We're getting another 2 to 4" of snow tonight, but that no longer qualifies as a storm here ....all anyone can talk about is that, once the snow stops, it's going to be 33f tomorrow (.56c)....people are so HAPPY! It's going to be like a heat wave!

Sounds horrific on either end of the spectrum Susan and Trixiepony, stay safe!
As Claire said we had what we classed as a bad winter in 2010, snow from 1st of December until well into Feb and temps rarely above freezing and regularly as low as minus 18 overnight where i live but the snow, although lots of it, only actually came a couple of times it just never melted as so cold constantly, so nothing on what your experiencing Susan, the pictures i've seen are unreal.

If only we could get my snow and trixie's fire together, both problems would be solved! Haffy..re the long duration winter, we've had some of those in the past, and they are terrible. This one is weird in that it basically started the last week in January and hasn't let up since....snow almost every day. Before that we'd had hardly any! I think too many people were counting their chickens too soon....Mother Nature said "aha...I can take care of that!".
