One of the reasons why we feel the heat a lot here is that we have a high humidity in this country a lot of the time. Brits can cope quite well with 30C temps in Greece, Canaries, Spain, etc where it's a drier heat. (I've never been to the USA so I don't know how humid areas are there) Another reason is that this year it suddenly jumped up from an extremely cold spring, where temps were in single figures to these very hot (for us) temps. We never had a chance to get acclimatised through a slowly warming spring like usual. Also the last few summers have been abysmal here, its the first time we've had temps like this for years! But I sort of do agree that most Brits are never happy with the weather. Personally I wish it was hot all year round

It does seem to jump from winter to summer and back again awfully quick with very little in between.

That is unusual! Thanks for posting al those fans Allyk I'd sit in my car with the AC on all day if petrol wasn't so expensive! (another moan!) I'd like it pleasantly warm all year round without the awful humidity. I might stop moaning then ;D Going to be thunderstorms and floods today...nice..not!

Yeah we've had a thunderstorm this morning. Bloomin thing woke me up at the crack of dawn. Hope we don't get floods - can't we just have something in moderation for a change?

I don't mind the storms either as long as we don't get flooded out. The poor garden was looking a bit sorry for itself and I was getting a bit fed up of recycling my old washing up and shower water to give the plants a drink.

Been for a drive up the dale with a friend today and not only has the river overflowed and flooded loads of fields there is also snow up on the high ground. We drove up to Tan Hill (the highest pub in England) for a drink and it was quite snowy up there (about 1700 feet) and the snow was mixed with huge puddles - it must have been raining and snowing at about the same time which is a bit freaky! Behind the car you can see their own small snow plough! Almost every winter some of the visitors get snowed up here for a few days.

I like hot weather in summer but also don't mind some cold/snow in winter. So far there's no sign of a big freeze this year though.

Brumby we put ice cubes in the dogs' water bowls. Also fill a toddler pool for them. wih the heat wave coming, I would keep them inside with a fan I think. Lucky for me I am in TAssie, we don't get the extreme heat here or if we do just for one or two days. I hope your old dog will be fine.

Thanks Vera, my dogs spend about 90% of their time indoors, so they are ok. Its just my silly (possibly slightly demented) old girl will not settle unless I settle somewhere. Her back legs become very wobbly in hot weather and I'm worried she will get stuck somewhere and not be able to get up. Its a difficult time when our loved ones get old Off to complete the watering or the garden will be scorched, who in their right mind plants an English cottage garden in Australia? Its beautiful but not practical and a lot of work!

I don't think any of the early settlers were in their right minds when they got here after that sea journey. Crossing Bass Strait in a ferry is bad enough. Native gardens are a lot of work too, and in my opinion not as attractive as some of the others. Ours is a mix of grevilleas and roses, jasmine and tea trees, bamboo and proteas. I like the roses best and they take no care, just an occasional watering. How old is your old one? I hope she manages the heatwave. I have one son in Melbourne and one returning to Adelaide tomorrow. They are both cold weather people! But old enough to take care of themselves. I hope thye look out for the elderly around them.

Lol Vera thats what I always think about anyone daft enough to settle here. I remember once visiting a Roman fort and there was a transcription of a Roman soldier moaning about the British weather and how cold and wet it was. Some things have never changed!

This is getting seriously unfunny - I have never known weather like this, I know it's all because of the gulfstream and how we have destroyed so much of the ice hence the gulf stream getting stuck - but all the same - this is scary! On the news they just called it a hurricane down here, I really hope that is just media hype!!

it is terrible Vera. Some houses are submerged up to the tops of their doors on the Somerset levels. Things are supposed to calm down next week but it will be a long while before the water subsides.

I have been ok weather wise, though it was very windy the other day - so much so that I couldnt watch telly through my satelite dish due to the fact that the picture was breaking up. I was lucky though - my parents had no electric for over 24 hours.
I did have snow last monday though - it was snowing when I went out, but it was the kind that didnt stick, so I wasnt worried.

The Isle of Avalon is returning! Seriously though, when an island is so overcrowded that it builds houses on flood plains.................. we 'reclaimed' the fenland marshes on the somerset levels - nature has had the last word! It's stopped raining today for the first time in weeks, and there are people everywhere - there must be an awful lot of dogs that only get walked when it's not raining - somehow I don't think mine would go along with that!

We are lucky where I live, being on high ground have missed a lot of flooding. However there is standing water in fields everywhere and a few new ponds and lakes have appeared. Can't see it draining anytime soon. It actually managed to stop raining for a few hours this morning!

We had some very wet snow last week which thankfully didn't settle. Nothing since, thank god, but that might change! I'm glad the wretched high winds and storms have gone, we had weeks of that keeping me awake at night grrrr!

We've had the terrible winds and storms up here too. My dad's fence blew down and quite a few trees also. I dread to thinkwhat the windchill factor is at 1c and a 40 mile an hour wind. I came in the other day almost crying with the cold it was freezing, windy and sleeting. Its times like this I wish I was almost anywhere other than the UK!!

The weather is really freaky, it is so unpredictable - in one hour I got rained on, sleeted on, hailed on, snowed on, then back to rained on! It's now gone really cold and I'm struggling with a car with no heater - I have to wait until the air temp is above freezing to drive as otherwise it ices up inside the windscreen faster than I can clear it! I hate, hate driving on icy roads so as far as I'm concerned bring back the rain!

Arrggh! Done with the snow! We hit a record in Massachusetts yesterday....40.2 inches of snow in a week. More out in the suburbs where I live. The subway (tube to you) actually froze to the tracks yesterday. With the windchill, it is currently -23.89c outside. I'll be out there shortly, waiting for a train that will more than likely be late. Spring needs to get a move on! www.wcvb.com/weather/boston-history-made-with-new-snowfall-record/31064030

Crikey susan I don't envy you having to ride trains in that! Its about 4 or 5 years since we had snow that deep in Yorkshire. Hopefully not this year tho there is some forecast for the next couple of days. At least your country seems to cope with the stuff better than ours susan. You get an inch here and the whole country grinds to a halt. No trains, no planes taking off, running out of grit, etc.
