The new heating situation is ridiculous...unless the system actually packs it in, why on earth would they wan't to do that kind of work at this time of year? Hope they come and finish it off quicky garaj!

What are they going to do with the 'hole' garej surely they will block it up and cap the chimney...? No, they're coming back on thursday to put in a new fireplace and put in a new albeit crappy electric fire.

Susan, did you make it through the blizzard ok?

I did, thanks rally! No power loss for me, (fingers crossed, we keep getting powerful wind gusts), though something like 400,000 in Massachusetts did lose power, mostly on Cape Cod and the islands. Hopefully the power everywhere (Connecticut and Rhode Island also got hit) will be restored quickly...the temp is expected to dip to 0 (F) tonight.
Coastal towns are still having issues....flooding has been bad, some houses along the shore have reportedly been swept off their foundations by the storm surge, but no serious injuries.
The real tragedy here was in Boston...a father and 12 year old son were digging out their car this afternoon when the child got into the car to warm up. Unfortunately, they hadn't yet cleared the snow away from the tailpipe and the carbon monoxide fumes backed up into the car.....colorless, odorless and lethal. The father was shoveling snow, and didn't realize that his son was unconscious, not napping, till it was too late.

It's trying to snow here. When I say "trying", I mean it's pretty pathetic little flakes coming down.
So long as it stays that way...!

What a tragic story susan. Glad you are OK and still have your power. We've all been talking about the awful USA weather here. Got snow forecast for the next few days but none has appeared yet. Getting pretty sick of winter now!

Sorry to hear that rosie. I can see it on the tops of the hills but none has fallen down here in the valley. They keep threatening it but so far it hasn't been as bad as expected - touch wood!

Yeah it looks like winter is coming back here again too with more snow forecast, tho nothing like a foot! I was just remembering this time last year - we had a freakily hot March, hottest I've ever known with temps in the 20s (70 plus F) . We were having picnics and sunbathing! Susan I can't remember do you use C or F in America for temps?

It's warmed up here a bit, going to be pouring rain tomorrow, on top of all the snow....they've said there will be street flooding, and possibly even a bit of river overflow (lucky for me I don't live nearby a river, but I feel for those who do!). Cold again at the end of the week, so whatever is left will freeze solid.
Sigh.........winter must END!!!

Woke up this morning to a couple of inches of it and its been snowing off and on, then melting in the sun. A nice mixture of slush and ice to contend with! Also a freezing cold very strong wind. I agree with susan when is this winter ever gonna end....

Yep, sitting here with a hot water bottle stuffed up my jumper and six other jumpers on top - the wind is the worst and I've run out of stuff to try and hold the fence up with, all that is keeping it from finishing up next door is that I've tied it to a tree!!

I'm sitting with hat scarf, fleece and fingerless gloves! Such is the price of gas nowadays. I always laugh when I see TV shows with some woman lounging around in the winter in a glamourous skimpy nightie - all I can say is that their heating bills must be phenomenal!!! ;D

I always think that too!! I've noticed esp in Amercan sitcoms (I'm weird, I dislike English sitcoms nowadays and watch all the old American ones instead) but the women go to bed in all these sexy nighties and wander round at night with them on!! I stagger out in my multiple jumpers and trousers and grab for a coat!!! The only difference between what I wear during the day and at night is that I wear all the tattiest baggiest ones in bed!

Erm...I have to admit, we Americans do keep our homes heated pretty well in the winter. One of my favorite Agatha Christie novels is At Bertram's Hotel, in which the manager mentions that they keep the rooms for Americans heated several degrees warmer than the British rooms Dunno why....maybe it's because you really have to put a lot into heating in quite a bit of the US in winter....as in, if you don't, you will quite literally freeze to death. Sort of "oh, to hell with it, we've already blown our retirement funds on this years oil bill, might as well be wearing shorts and a t-shirt in January".
