That's interesting Susan! I always feel that using any form of heating is an admission of at best weakness, and at worst, old age! I had two electric heaters going today and feel as guilty as if I had spent the money on something silly! Plus having any sort of heating on indoors makes it feel even colder when you go out! They always seem to have hot water in sitcoms too!!

I think the old fashioned Brits were supposed to be tougher than the Americans - all that going to bed with the windows open and those bracing dips the Famous Five used to take before breakfast in (no doubt ice cold) rivers. Just another reason why I think I CANT have been born British cos I loathe cold and would have the heating on night and day if I could afford it. Our fuel bills have gone up a huge amount in the last few years Susan, I dont think many people of modest means could keep it on 24/7!
Going back to Agatha Christie I always have a (sympathetic) giggle at Hercule Poirot's horror of open windows, draughts and bathing in cold water. ;D

Another one here who feels guilty turning on the heating. I look like a Mitchellin woman most of the winter. Hate being cold! I remember as a kid we had no central heating and there would be ice on the inside of the windows in the bedrooms. If we were cold mum would say "put another jumper on!" We used to hudle round the coal fire in the living room, your front would be roasting and your back cold!

Same here, we didn't have central heating until I was about 8 and we moved into a posh modern house. I remember you used to get chilblains from toasting your cold feet in front of the coal fire!

Well I think another moan about the weather is due! Its now officially spring and 1 week to Easter and the temp is hovering about freezing point plus the snow is back! Forecast for the weekend is foul too. I definitely think we've entered the next ice age...

We had snow last week as well but then it melted (in the valley at least - has never gone from the tops) Another irritation is that we has quite bad snow about 11 days ago when the recycling boxes and bags were due to be emptied and the bin men didnt come for them cos of the snow and STILL haven't despite the snow melting in between, so theres also rubbish strewn every where!

We had snow here. I went out before and it was up to my knees! I had to get my dad to clear the snow off the bin lid because I couldnt get the rubbish in. It has been really bad, it took my dad over an hour to get to me, and over an hour to get to my parents house. Normally the journey would take 20 mins. My friend left her dog in kennels (in the next but one village) whilst she went on holiday and they got a phone call to say dont bother because of how bad the snow was. So she is left without her dog. She doesnt have any snow where she is which is fortunate for her. Here is the view outside my window this morning

I am officially sick to death of snow. I have not been out all week until today - all because of the snow. I have had cabin fever because normally I go out nearly every single day and I have been stuck outdoors because it's not worth the risk of going outside. The snow is so deep that you cant walk on the pavements - you have to walk on the road. Which is hazardous enough by itself.
I fell over twice in the snow on Sunday because of how deep it is. It hasnt melted though the roads are clear. A digger came to clear the car park that is outside the flat on Wednesday, but one space is taken up because of the snow.
Fortunately I havent run out of food because in winter I keep the freezer well stocked and I still havent emptied it. Though it must be said that I am getting sick to death of eating chicken because that's all I seem to have. I managed (with my parents help) to get to morrisons on Sunday so I could buy all that I needed.

Poor you garej. Sounds like you've got the worst of it. Just a few bits n bobs of it round here on the low ground, (still a lot on the hills) but its still bloody freezing. Didnt get to the racing stables visit today cos it was just sooo cold with an icy wind and my Dad who I was going with can't get too cold cos of his heart condition. I can't believe there are still snowdrops about! We should have daffodils by now! Will spring ever arrive?

My pup thinks she's an icebreaker - even if the ice is really thick she jumps up and down on it until it breaks and the silly idiot can get wet - then she finishes up like a frozen hedgehog running along covered with icicles! I can't yell at her 'cos it's too cold to open your mouth up there!

Labs are bonkers! Been sunny here the past few days but still really cold. My poor old cat spends the day sunning herself on the windowsill she wants to go out in the sunshine, thinking its nice and warm, but its been too chilly for her cos she shivers in the cold now! I did manage to let her out for about an hour yesterday as the wind was blowing from the east and my garden faces due west with house as a windbreak, thus it was actually quite warm for a while. Gave me a chance to pretend I lived somewhere with a 'normal' climate!

Been out and about up the valley a couple of times over the last few days now the weather has slightly improved and amazed to see how much snow is still there. If you get up on the high moors there are still drifts 2-3 feet in places! (I know they are that deep as my friend stood in one and promptly sank in!) Here's a pic of Swaledale taken at the weekend:

Lol rosie your 2 posts together - one moaning about the cold never going the other moaning that its too hot! We Brits are never satisfied! ;D
I noticed that the south is a lot lot hotter than us up north at the mo, its really cooled down the last few days here. In fact it was only 16 this morning! Tho it was up to the low 20s this afternoon. But it sounds like you still are having the heatwave.

The weather station (which is fixed to a pergola in the garden) registered a temperature of 30°C! My dad was saying that he cant remember a hotter summer since he moved to the house (which was 1979). I cant remember a hotter summer since I moved to my flat which was nearly 4 1/2 years ago!

lol Claire I hadn't noticed that I never stop moaning ;D I'm sat here with no clothes on with the sweat pouring off me. Sorry, probably too much info! Garej, hope the funeral went o.k. despite this heat. I can't remember the last time I felt as hot as this. I want to jump in that pile of snow in the above photos

I want to jump in that pile of snow in the above photos Well the funeral went ok, but nearly everyone (male wise) that was wearing suit jackets took them off. This is the 6th funeral I have been to (and the second this year) in 2 1/2 years and this time I didnt take a jumper. Everyone complained that the church was too hot which is unusual!

The weather station (which is fixed to a pergola in the garden) registered a temperature of 30°C! I know it's cliche for Americans to laugh at Brits complaining about the 'extreme' heat . . . but I'm going to do it anyways ;D 30C = 86F which is downright mild for this time of year. It doesn't even begin to get toasty till 90F (32C). And a few days of 90 are nothing to get excited about. The one year we have over 30 consecutive days of 90+ was a bit wearing. And this is for a temperate part of the country. Other parts get much hotter still. I'm sat here with no clothes on with the sweat pouring off me. Sorry, probably too much info! Will have you perking right up in no time. In fact, I predict there will be quite a bit of money to be made in the AC business in the years to come. If that's too fancy, you can always make a swamp cooler:
