OMG first snow of the winter here...in fact a veritable blizzard with an icy strong wind too. It would coincide with the day I had to make a longish journey involving trains and have to stand around in freezing rail stations. Cally if you are reading this you are welcome to the snow! ;D Anyone else got it?

No snow yet, but I just had to break ice on the water buckets already, it actually feels too cold here to snow!

Lots of the white stuff here - everything is covered. Also windy and bitterly cold. Could be interesting going in for last day of school tomorrow! Was very icy and slippery on roads earlier after small amount of snow/sleet in afternoon. How come the snow has been forecast for days, but the roads still don't get gritted in advance?

Thats Britain for you Sarah, a little bit of snow and everything grinds to a halt. They are never prepared in this country. I think its a case of dont think about it and it might go away. Same thing with the floods really.
Still I'm glad I got my heating fixed in time for it!

School closed today because of snow - actually really disappointed as the last day of this term is lovely with carols and mince pies and lots of Christmas activities.

It is freezing here with an icy wind. Only had a sprinkling of snow on the ground, but the radio is full of about 100 schools that are closed in this and the neighbouring county.

I think Cornwall got off lightly - just a ten minute flurry about 8 last night. It was really pretty though.
Hope you lot all survive minus frostbite!

Woke up this morn and it was really thick everywhere. It does look pretty. I might take some pics if I can find my digi camera. I think a lot of places further up the valley will be cut off tho as it gets really deep up in the hills.
What a shame sarah, I always used to love the last day of term at the college where I worked too. We usually managed to kick most of the students out and have a christmas party. And then it was all off to the pub until the wee hours. ;D

No snow for me either but sooo cold. My car wouldn't start so I had to take the kids to school in OH's bright yellow work van, it was so funny, all my daughter could say was "please just drop me off and go before anyone sees" Of course, being the evil mummy that I am, I hung around and chatted to some other mums hahaha!

Over a foot of snow overnight, and more coming down as I type this! It's going to be cold all week to, so it looks like a White Christmas here in Massachusetts, which actually isn't common for us...the heavy snow ususally starts in January.

Same here Susan, I think we have maybe had 2 white christmases in my lifetime. I really hope it thaws as all my family live quite far away and I dont want to miss seeing them through the weather. My dad was driving home from here last night to his and got caught in a blizzard. There were a load of cars stuck on an infamous bank near his, only he and 2 lorries managed to get up it and get home!

Its days like these when I actually feel envious for those without horses! So many rugs with buckles that are so hard to do up with numb hands... Also riding not possible (poor Buster is used to spain!) And im doubting the likelihood of me making this party what with public transport being a bit messed up! Still... snow is awesome

I know...it really puts a damper on things....so many flights were canceled yesterday, today too, and road travel is almost impossible. The weekend before Christmas is pretty much the worst time it can happen, too! Luckily for me, I'm home, have a load of good books, Christmas shopping and shipping done....here's the view from the armchair I'm sitting in right now....photo taken about an hour ago...it's snowing even harder now!

Umm...when I said we had snow now, well it was the sort of snow haffy said she'd had. The fluffy stuff and not much of it. It's still bitterly cold and really icy and if we do get the proper stuff tonight it's going to be pretty lethal tomorrow. Susanb that is pretty view from your window.

Wow what a fantastic view I'm envious! I thought I had a reasonable view out my bedroom window of the hills and woods over the top of the other houses, but nothing like yours! We do have that thick snow here tho.
BTw been scrutinising the pic trying to work out what books you got in your bookcase!

Thanks...the view is basically why I stay....that and the convenient location....it's an apartment complex on about 29 acres of land....as you can see (through the snow, past the tree, in the distance :-) ), it's all two story red-brick buildings, "colonial" style, and is pretty nicely landscaped, trees, bushes, walkways around the complex. All in all, it feels more like a neighborhood than an apartment complex.....people stroll their babies around in baby-carriages, kids ride their bikes, elderly couples stroll, dog-walkers are out in all weather (yes, they've been out today!). Anyway, the books! The shelves that show just spines are all Thelwell on top, as well as four on the right hand side of the bottom. Rest of the bottom shelf are a couple other cartoonists: Syd Hoff and Helen Hokinson, who each published in the New Yorker magazine in the 40s and 50s. Upper deck of the side that has the side of book showing is my leather-bound Tolkien set: www.eastonpressbooks.com/leather/product.asp?code=0193&c=4&source=CQ867I only have four of the five books, as the Silmarillion wasn't part of the set when I purchased it, some years back. The book on the lower shelf is Great Heart, written and illustrated by C.W. Anderson

susanb that is a great view and i'm very jealous of the snow - I got excited last night as we had our first snow flurry but it soon turned to rain and this morning the roads were like ice rinks but still no white stuff!

Proper snow would have been vastly preferable to what we have here, the sprinkling is now solid ice, and is staying frozen - it is practically impossible to walk on and I was actually perusing the small ads in the local paper this morning, in the hopes of finding someone I could pay to help lug haylage and water about, only then I remembed they haven't gritted the roads here and so no one could get here anyway! I really, really wish I only had virtual horses to look after!
Where else apart from Yorkshire has had proper snow?

Well they gave the south a severe weather warning for last night with several inches of snow forecast but we still didn't get except for another sprinkling which has frozen and is lethal to walk on. I'm glad I don't have real horses now as even dog walking is a worry.
