The postage was pretty bad for the US too....about 9 pounds, which works out to around $18...sigh. But it's always pretty bad shipping to the US (even Canadian postage has gone sky high!).
I've had good luck and bad on abe.....it's so completely up to the individual bookseller! I've had books described as "fine" turn out to be tatty ex-library copies, but then I've bought books that were in superb condition and reasonably priced. Oh, for a crystal ball! :-)

That seems high postage I would hve thought about £7 would have covered it.
Haven't done too bad on abe. Had one book go missing but it was refunded. Condition has been overall OK too. But I think the sellers should be made to include pics. Its ridiculous for people to be buying expensive rare books without even seeing what they look like.

It was a bit of an "ouch", but in all fairness, it is a pretty big book (at least I think it is, hasn't arrived yet!)....it was advertised on an early Primrose Cumming book....Doney or Silver Eagle, can't remember which, and appears to be the same format....those early A & C Black books had pages like cardboard (which is probably why they've held up so well for so long!)
Re pics....I so agree.....virtually every seller on ebay includes pics, it's just ridiculous that abe sellers don't...and really, abe isn't even the worst, there are other sites where even fewer sellers have pics. Maybe mandatory over a certain price point?

I don't know whether you have experienced this or not too but if you dare to ask for a picture of the book before you buy they just ignore you completely! Have you noticed the NZ sellers tend to have pics more so than any other nationalities
Dinah is a large format heavy book Susan, or at least my copy is but I have a smaller format copy of skewbald so it may depend on the age.

There was a pic of Dinah on the ebay listing, and it did look to be one of the earier printings (with 75 illustrations!).
Re New Zealand...I hadn't noticed that particularly, but one thing I did notice about NZ is that they've got waaaay better postage rates to the US than the UK or Australia (or Canada for that matter)

I've actually had quite a few pics/scans when I've asked for them haffy but it is a bit of an irritation. And yes some people dont bother to reply. Re. Dinah, I was thinking of the smaller Skewbald-sized book so maybe the postage is about right for the larger one. Back to the 'If I could ride' saga. A copy has just appeared on ebay looking suspiciously like the one I tried to buy a few days ago. Reserve on so will be at least £50. A bit more than I was gonna buy it for Really these booksellers who buy cheap and then sell for huge profit shouldnt be allowed! ;D

They look nice - don't often see Patrick's Pony in hardback - when I have room my plan is to 'replace' with nice hardbacks with dustjackets - only trouble is I'll probably want to keep paperbacks as well!

I am having that problem at the min sarah, I keep keeping my favourite PB ed as a reading copy(as you do) and the HB's are just there to admire on the shelf...lol
I am succedding somewhat in decluttering my multiple paper back copies now though and have convinced myself in most cases I don't need every single edition of each book (unless they have nice covers like some of the illustrated Jackies do etc)
Claire the jods are ace......so glad I was wasn't born 30 or so years earlier!!

Jods aside what a gorgeous cover it is. Did Geoffrey Whittam do it, I seem to remember he did the illus inside and it looks like him. One of my fav illustrators. BTW am nicking the pic for my website Bah you lot with your multiple copies. I have to sell all the decent copies and keep the tatty paperback ones. Wish I wasnt a bookseller sometimes

Not so much what I got as what I noticed.....not sure if anyone is on the lookout for a hardcover of A Pony for Jean by Joanna Cannan, but there's one on ebay in the US right now: cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=350089298845&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=022It's the US printing, which is identical to the UK printing, with the exception of the dj color....it's red surrounding Anne Bullen's sketch in the US edition, in the UK edition it's green. The seller doesn't say what the charges to ship to the UK are, though the listing does say he/she will ship worldwide

Hi yes I have read it. Its OK tho not as good as some of her other books. Its actually a sequel to a non-pony book. There is some more info about it on my website at this link: moliver.ponymadbooklovers.co.uk/I'm quite surprised you found a copy of it over there!

I just read my 1st Caroline Akrill- Eventer's Dream- all in one go 'til 2am- and loved it! I didn't quite believe in the notion of most of the Fanes' horses not having names, though; being a bit of a girl groom dealing with 9 horses every Friday morning at the RDA, it would be chaotically impractical for the horses not to have a monicker. I mean, when someone said "the bad tempered chestnut" you'd have to ask "which one?" all the time... that said, I can now say there are good 'modern' (1981) pony books about- YAY!

My latest ones I also got a book called "Three For Riding" by Muriel Newton, but it doesnt have it's dj, so no picture. I also added to the non pony works by CPT pile too.

Wow! Not much chance of me getting hold of a copy of the book - so I'll settle for a cute blue bug eyed hoppy spider!! Where did you get him from?

Sarah....I've got Speedy lurking in my tbr pile...is it good? Should I bring it to the top of the pile?
Haffy...congratulations on Caroline! I've had luck finding books there too now and again...bit hit or miss, but some sellers who list there don't seem to have much knowledge of the value of the more rare pony books.

I liked it when I read it years ago - but haven't got a copy to hand to reread at moment - so will have to wait to read new book.

Sarah, you can pre order out of stock titles and put in the max you are willing to pay. It's quite good sometimes as I got mystery this way and a few others I can't think of right now. I guess the downside is my pre orders run into a couple of pages so if they all come up at once...oh dear...(they keep details on file to process it)

I have a couple of mine from preorder, including Primrose Cumming's The Deep Sea Horse. However I have about 4 books, which have been there quite a while, which are unfilled.

Could be dangerous to preorder - like haffy said might end up with loads at the same time.
