Just thought we should have a special thread dedicated to telling everyone about our latest finds, bargains and having a general gloat about what we have got our sweaty little mitts on! I think it would be nice to have it all on one thread. I'll start the ball rolling...just got a nice copy of Blackbirds and Gift Pony, also Gillian Baxter's Sweet Rock (For which I must thank Garej for telling me of the fact the book existed!), copy of Primrose Cummings The Great Horses and at long last The Team From Low Moor. Have already read half of Sweet Rock and love it. Here's some pics:

Nice haul - have you been internet shopping or did you get lucky and discover a good bookshop? Internet Shopping. All of them bar the Mona the Welsh Pony, A Day To Go Hunting and Pony For Sale, came from Jane Badger, who recently bought about 500 books. They were on my wish list. A Day To Go Hunting and Pony For Sale came from ebay, and Mona the Welsh pony came from abebooks.

I've just been on abebooks as well - found The Mystery Pony for 52p!!! And a copy of The Young Horsebreakers with DJ. Wil not get too excited until they arrive though. I like the look of Mona - there always seems to be a copy on ebay - but around £50.

sarah I am putting the evil eye on you ;D wanted both those but I obviously look on abe at the wrong times! I have just bought a load of pony books but they are mainly for my shop not me, altho I have never read Riders and Raids by M E Atkinson which is one of them so will prob read that one first. Also lately picked up what I think are the first 3 Princess Tina Pony annuals. Not read any of these before so will be quite interested to look at them. Mona is a really rare one recently sold a copy without its dj for 30 so 45 was a reasonable price for one with its jacket.

I used to own Mystery Pony (got from ebay) - but annoying it arrived when I was away and for some unknown reason the landlord came into our property and throw away all the post from residents past without checking for my post. (insert any rude words you can think of at this point)!

Just rude words Sarah, you're kind! I'd have had him arrested!!!! Interfering with the public mail is a Federal offence in the US (i.e. it breaks a Federal, rather than a State law).....even if someone has moved, you give the mail back to the mail carrier....throwing it away is really, really illegal!

Over here it is illegal to open any mail not addressed to you.
A couple of months ago I got sent a letter off a kinda like support worker (my flat is with a housing charity and the person sending it works for the charity) saying that some people (not me, but another tenant) have been opening other people's mail that it was illegal. It also said that if you should receive an letter that is not addressed to you that you should either hand it to her (for some previous tenants they have forwarding addresses, but not all) or write on it "Not known at this address, return to sender" and shove it in the nearest postbox.
I personally dont bother giving it back to her, but just shove it in the nearest postbox, that way I am not breaking the law. But either way, your landlord should not have done that.

Ok changing the subject slightly and not a pony book I know but I am just so chuffed to have got this book I feel I have to tell somebody!
Its called 'Where's Wumpus' by Elleston Trevor, an Australian childrens book (at least I assume it Australian can any of our Aussie members confirm?) about a koala and his friends. My dad used to read these as a child but lost them and I had bought him the other 2 in the series already but this one proved elusive and is never on abe. I have bid on it on ebay a few times but kept getting outbid, but got it this time!! Just in time for fathers day coming up too. HURRAH!

I did a big long search for pony books this week, and although I was successful, I didnt buy any...
I found 6 different editions of Black Beauty (not the first one though).
I found The Swallow Summer by K M Peyton, but I have already got it. It was located in the adult section and priced at £2.95. I also found one of the Hollywell Stables series, which was priced at a more modest 30p, but I have it somewhere anyway.
I also found Fly By Night, by K M Peyton (in a different shop) but I have it already, and it was on a extremely high shelf (I would have got the shop owner to get it) so no idea of the price.
I found a compilation of stories chosen by K M Peyton (she seems to a reoccuring theme this week), but I dont go for compilations on the whole. I had nearly all the books in it anyway, and this comment amused me (it isnt word perfect):-
"Although a Pony For Jean was published in the 1930s, it's humour makes it a good choice. The author, Joanna Cannan, is a mother to the famous Pulletin-Thompson sisters, who have written many pony books"
I got three books in the post this week. One was The Doping Affair by CPT, and the other was "Our Horses" by Lionel Edwards.
The other is so special it deserves it's own thread.

Were those all in shops nearby you garej? I very rarely find any in bookshops, occaisionally in charity shops but mainly in markets, carboot sales, bookfairs or on the net. The only shop I regularly get pony books is Barter Books which is one of the biggest 2nd hand book shops in the country and is about 50 miles away. Go about once a month to trade in some of my old stock so doesnt cost me anything!
Oh almost forgot to say just managed to buy a copy of mystery pony by Sheila Chapman, bit more expensive than your copy sarah altho it was in a book with pony from fire as well. Still waiting for it to arrive.

Go about once a month to trade in some of my old stock so doesnt cost me anything! Yes, they were. They were all charity shops except for Fly By Night, which was in a bookdealer shop. Although I have been there 3 more times before this week, it was only this week I found out that they had another room (that was the only pony book in it though). I dont know if it is my area, but I found an worrying trend - a lot of older children's books (think 8 years +) are now located in the adult section, and priced accordingly. Which makes it sometimes cheaper to go on ebay and pay for postage than buy from a charity shop! The children's section seem to be now reserved for preschoolers/toddlers book (Bob the Builder etc) or annuals. I found a lot of Narnia books also in the adult section too.

Yes, garej it is not your area only unfortunately as they also do that in charity shops here. Also the number of older childrens books seems to have dwindled considerably. As you say now its all toddlers/board books. And if you do actually find any...silly prices

Where I live, Canberra, the pickings are fairly slim and most second hand book sellers are situated in a semi industrial zone, and what with the city being only 80ish years old, really old books are thin on the ground. Never the less, a couple of months ago I found at least 9 books, none costing more than $3 each (around 1.40 GBP). Ebay is the way to go for collectables and Claire, your service was fantabulous! The books arrived faster than if they'd been sent from within Oz! Stoked, I was. If anyone has any special Australian books they'd like me to keep an eye out for, let me know, Im happy to send them over for a swap- I love Joanna Cannan but her books go for a LOT here and are very rare.

Thanks for the kind words cally, for some reason airmail from here to australia is always very fast! I am sure there are some australian books I am after will check up and let you know. Also will keep an eye out for joanna cannans for you. Have you put your book wants up on our dedicated thread yet? Mystery Pony arrived today safe and sound.

I love Joanna Cannan but her books go for a LOT here and are very rare. I dont know if you know this, but Fidra Books have republished two of her children's books: We Met Our Cousins and London Pride. From the publisher themselves they cost £15 (approx $31) including postage, which may be cheaper than buying from ebay etc. Obviously if you dont need them, then it is a problem. Claire, thanks for confirming it is not just my area, it seems stupid that they are doing that. Charity shops provide a great boost to income, you would think that would try and get as many people to spend money in there, not go to ebay or other second hand sites by their ridiculous overpricing.

My Mystery Pony has still not arrived - but payment has gone from bank account - hopefully Tuesday. I agree that charity shops (in my area at least) are pretty rubbish for pony books - although I did see two and had to get them as they were ony 49p each - but only one of new Chestnut Hill series and Horse in Danger (Sandy Lane Stables).

I wonder if Julia Wynmalen is related to Henry Wynmalen? I would be very surprised if she isnt. I got a new book this week (I also got an non pony book) which only cost me 19p!
