I know, my pixel fixation is out of control - wonder if there is a PA - Pixels Anonymous ;D Now come on you two - talk about the judgement of Solomon - should I cut the book in half? Don't do this to me!! I have only ever parted with doubles before now - but am trying to tax my car at the mo - and as it is a twenty year old Volvo estate - or course I am getting penalised for being unecofriendly! ( As though we wouldn't all own a three million miles to the gallon, £15 road tax, electric car - if only we could afford to buy one in the first place!)

Kunuma I am trying to scan the whole series but wouldnt keep the book so if your selling it and haffyfan wants it for her private collection I could suggest that we all decide a price amongst us, sell it to me and then I sell it to haff for the same price. Other than that its pistols at dawn....

Happy reading I love 3 ponies and Shannan and The First Rosette there both excellent. Riding with Lyntons was one of the books we discussed in our reading circle thread you might like to have a look when you've read it to see if you agree with our views.

I shall have a good read on my holiday I also got some modern horse books from the library (which is awful can I just say, there is nothing there that I would particularly like!) Oh I also have 'Molly and the Misfits' Just found it from ages ago, anyone ever heard of it? Its a collection of stories by Rosemary Simmonds. Think its a first edition too, however not sure on that one!

Read a few of Rosemary Simmonds stories. She has about 4 collections of short stories of which Molly is one. They are quite good actually.

I'M ABSOLUTELY STOKED!!! I managed to buy a copy of 'Silver Eagle Carries On' (sorry Claire), for $24.20 (about 11.90 GBP) locally (incl. postage)!!!
I'm so in awe of this albeit 2nd ed. I don'tknow if I dare read it: it's 1943, with the reverse side of the dustjacket having ads for aeroplane books, and a floral church prize plate written in copperplate from 1947- so sweet.
It just adds to the social value of this book, which was printed in London in war time.
I can't believe I own something that to me, at least, is so immensely precious and valuable...
...no idea what it's actually like, tho'...
...I'll still love it regardless...

I am still looking for an affordable copy of rivals to You and everyone else! Darkhorse and Cally, the books are pretty good. I like the second one best as it is quite unusual in that it looks at what happened to riding schools during the war years.

I also like Silver Eagle Carries On . It gives lots of information about what went on in the horse world during the war and is really interesting. Another book about this era is Royal Crusader by Glenda Spooner and is well worth reading. I am also looking for 'Rivals'

England in the 1930s to 1960s is a particular interest of mine, especially WWII and the recovery years. I think this era is incredibly relevant to some of what's going on today, with the ideas of recycling, needs vs wants, growing your own etc etc. I'm keen to learn more about the growth of horse riding as a pastime, especially for girls, in the 20th century, so...
Which do you think ranks as The First Real Pony Book (besides Black Beauty.)? ie. with young people, ponies and stuff?

Yes Cally, I agree that is a very interesting topic. I am also interested in riding and pony books in that time period in their role of empowering girls, a sort of feminist perspective. But I won't get started on that in case I bore you! As to the first real pony book there is a bit of debate over it. Moorland Mousie (1929) is considered by many to be the first, but this was a 'pony-point of view' book rather than the traditional child and pony book we know so well today. In fact a similar sort of book was written many years before in 1912 (May Wynne's The Story of Heather). If however we only look at children and ponies I think the 2 contenders for this are probably The Ponies of Bunts by M Oliver and E Ducat (1933) and The Midnight Steeplechase by Moyra Charlton (1932) If you are interested in early pony books have you checked out the website page: www.ponymadbooklovers.co.uk/page40.html

The latest book, which is an non fictional one. It is by CPT, but one of two that she wrote under a possible pseudonym: it is credited to a Christine Keir. I also got 3 other CPT books lately, but they have been non pony items.

I found 'World's End in Winter' by Monica Dickens- I quite liked 'Summer at' but I dunno about this one so far (and I HATE the character of the parents; the father's a self centred maniac and the mother's a doormat and they're totally NEGLECTFUL rather than 'fun'.) Also got Mary Treadgold 'The Rum Day of the Vanishing Pony' and a non fiction Show horses and ponies book from the 1970s. Less than $3 for the lot (1.40 GBP).

Claire....consider fingers crossed!!!
My latest acquisition is a copy of Dinah, the Dartmore Pony by Allen Seaby....an early copy with dj. Went for all of 99p on ebay!!! I've never read his work before....glad to have got the first fairly inexpensively (I say fairly, as with postage to the US added a good bit to the price of the book!)

Thanks susan! Thats a pretty good price for a copy of Dinah with dj but paying international postage is a nuisance isnt it!

I saw that copy of Dinah - the postage rate for UK was a bit of a rip off which put me off bidding - glad it went to someone on here.
My latest purchase - Silver Brumby Racer!!! Looking forward to rereading it.
Good luck for "If I Could Ride" Claire. Still nervous of Abe after The Mystery Pony fiasco (although I did get a refund).
