ginslinger, that's very generous, but not in the cards.....I'm in the US! LOL....the postage would be more expensive than the book One of these days a copy will pop up for me, till then, well....the tbr pile is staggering, so I definitely don't lack for reading material

Ah well. Yes it can be a bit steep. To be honest it really doesn't have much horse content even compared to the others. A character rides in a Hunter trial off screen so to speak and that is it. It is very Midsomer Murders

Eeek! I hope the body count isn't as high as it is on Midsomer Murders

There is a wonderful bit where one of the villagers tells the detective that it isn't like London it is a law-abiding place where they don't have to lock stuff up and he replies that he didn't think it is very law abiding with 2 murders and their crime rate must be sky high!

I received a copy of A Stallion called Midnight today. Not read it but I am sure that it's a good read as anything by Victoria Eveleigh usually is.

Lol to the Midsomer Murders references. Perhaps a case of Midsomer Mare-ders....sorry couldn't resist! I've got A Stallion Called Midnight Garej. It's one I keep meaning to read but never seem to get round to. One for the Reading Challenge perhaps?

Groan.. I will reread them now I have them all. I did enjoy them because Josephine really does write well - she has a good way with describing nature and as has been observed in regard to her pony stories, she does write adults well. However there are a couple of things that puzzle me and I need to reread to see if the hole is in my memory rather than the plot!

Yes I am torn between doing that or the last Katy book for the summer reading challenge. I have an initial reading list but I am not going to narrow it down to the 5 books until I know the categories. I am aiming for 5 different authors. I am also debating whether to do the first Katy book but either way Victoria Eveleigh is going to feature in the summer reading challenge.

A few months ago, I noticed on Jane Badger's site that there was a short story sequel to Christine Pullein-Thompson's Chill Valley Hunt series which was serialised in Pony magazine in the early fifties. After a bit of emailing and more in forlorn hope than expectation scouring of ebay and similar it became clear that my only hope of reading it was if it had been lodged at the British Library. After a lot of catalogue scouring I ended up going to London on Tuesday registering as a reader, and eventually discovering that if the holding did exist it would be at the Boston Spa depot and would be on 48 hour order. So I went back today and had a happy few hours with Sandy and Andrew and the divine David and returned with photocopies which fortunately were quite legal for private research as it was only two or three pages from each issue. So happy. I also came across a very short reader's story from a 14 year old Gillian Baxter.

ginslinger, that's fabulous! And I'm pea green with envy The Chill Valley Hound trilogy were the first books of the PTs that I read, having turned them up locally in their Allen Library editions, and still remain my favorites (though I did replace those paperbacks with the original hardcovers some time back). It's really a shame that with all the publishing the sisters did, there was never a collected edition of all their magazine stories. Maybe murky publishing rights? Especially if the magazines are now defunct

I don't know what the situation is with short story ccpyright - I suspect that it depends on the individual contract maybe. Certainly there are some magazine published short stories in the PT collections and conversely Pony published a collection of short stories originally in the magazine - but not this.
I suspect that republishing rights may have remained with CPT and is now with the estate. It would be nice to have a omnibus edition with the three novels and this edited to have the inconsistencies removed but I don't suppose that would happen.
I have PMed you.

Just realised I never replied to your post Ginslinger. Although I wouldn't say the Chill Valley were amongst my favourite PT books I would dearly love to read that short story. Well done on all the hard work and perseverance! Quite happy to actually get my hands on some pony book bargains: these 2 plus Island Pony Club by Naomi Whattsit. (no pic of that one as no dustjacket). I got the Nigel Tranter book at a book fair but it was pretty cheap - it's one I've never come across before. I haven't even got the author on my website!! The Mary Gervaise was only a quid at a charity shop. Ex-library so it should have a very nice jacket when I've removed all the old plastic covering.

Looking at them with adult-studied-literature-at-university eyes, I can see their flaws but I still love them, and the changes in the world are far more evident - but them the gap between me first reading them and now is longer than the gap between them being written and me first reading them in the early 1980s. However it is worth a read, I think, and I will PM you. It is a nice finale really though it also shows that she couldn't really have carried on the series any further really as pony books as they are all a bit too grown up - whereas I am really sorry Josephine wasn't allowed to carry on the West Barsetshires having set up a wonderful younger cast

I am really sorry Josephine wasn't allowed to carry on the West Barsetshires having set up a wonderful younger cast Oh that would have been fantastic. There were some really good new characters that appeared in the last two in the series, especially Camp. I loved Gay and her matchmaking. And it would have been great to re-visit Major H, one of the best ever adult characters in a pony book IMHO!

Not bought any fiction for a while, but rather too many side saddle books, but last week i got a lovely first edition of Rennie Goes Riding at a great price, along with a Primrose Cumming book i thought i didn't have (but did just the US title Mystery Pony)and a couple of others that came as part of the little lot. Infact just realise i could add Rennie goes Riding to my reading challenge as pretty sure i've never read it before, just hope it's more my thing than the others

It's something of a miracle, given that I wanted hardcovers, with djs, not book club editions and didn't want to pay a mint for them. Just lucky to look at the right time when copies were going relatively cheap. I've only read the first two, but really enjoyed them (especially Black Hunting Whip), enough so that I decided to go after the lot....I'm sure I'm going to love them

You've done really well if you've got them all without paying too much as some are usually quite pricey. My personal favs are Black Hunting Whip, Spirit of Punchbowl Farm and The Wild One. Let me know what you think of them when you read them.

O MY GAWD!!!!!!
As some of you already know, I plan to work towards emigrating to Yorkshire when the kids have moved on, pets have passed away etc, so to console myself in the decade or so before that happens, I've been chucking stuff out and so today I just randomly pulled a pile of files out and found....
A COPY OF 'RIVALS TO SILVER EAGLE'!!!!!!!!
Dear Claire had popped it and some other rare books onto a disc for me, Phil had printed them out, but somehow this gem had been printed up and put in a folder and OVERLOOKED.
This is one of the few pony books I lust after and there appear to be very few copies anywhere in the world and certainly none in Australia so I am in rapture: just hope it isn't a massive disappointment!
Thanks again Claire. Don't know if I'll get much more 'cleaning' done to day but it shows it's worth it! xxxxxxxx

Nice find Claire...pretty cover, hope the book is good too! I haven't found much lately either....most recent book purchase was a non-pony book, Ice on the Lawn by Jill Stevens (aka Stephen Mogridge), which you had posted about some time ago. Found a copy in the US for $10, postage included, and snapped it up. If we have a "non-pony book by a pony book author" category in this years challenge, I'm set

Ice on the Lawn does have some pony content in it as the heroine is trying to choose between horses and ice skating as a career. It's not a bad little story.

Got this haul at a charity table in a local shop. Idly browsed, as it's rare there's anything of interest there, and was chuffed when I found this little lot! There's a bit of an Australian theme going on here. Mick's Country Cousins is a horse story despite the cover picture. Have any of our Aussie members read Anne de Roo before? She's a new author to me.

Well done on the placings. Have always had a fascination for model horse shows. We should have one on here some time if enough of us have them. Mine are mainly Schleich. I have some models so I can join if you do have a show.

They look an interesting bunch Claire. It's not that recent, but with a bit of help from a friend I managed to get hold of a copy of The Earth Sings earlier this year...here's hoping it's not a let down as these elusive titles so often are!

I'd be interested to know what The Earth Sings is like as I don't have any information about the plot at all on my website. Good find!
