Well its not quite a look what I got so much as look what I borrowed! Have got my sticky hands on a copy of this book kindly lent to me by a friend. It has a story by Gillian Baxter which I'd never seen before so got me quite excited It's called Peril in the Hills and looks to be an adventure set on a pony trek in Scotland. Its illustrated by Wendy Marchant. Has anyone read it? I'll try and find time to scan it and put it in the member's section for anyone who'd like to read it.

Just got this one in a job lot of pony books. Its quite a rare one and I haven't read it before: It was a pretty good job lot as it's got another rare one - Pony From Fire by Sheila Chapman plus one I haven't heard of before called The Black Colt by Wells Gerome. I think its a western type horse story. Also got the obligatory Black Beauty you get in every job lot of pony books lol. I wonder how many different copies i have now!

Just picked up this. Its non fiction which means I probably won't read it although it does sound quite interesting so may give it a try.

Wow- some great hauls! I know the series has it's detractors, but I found an ordinary copy of Berrisford's 'A Colt in the Family'. Can't stand having a missing book from a series!

Had a productive visit to the second hand bookshop (located in old stables no less) of my local National Trust pile (Morden Hall Park). In the 10p Bargain Bin I got battered copies of The Horses of Follyfoot, Three Jays on Holiday and an old Pony Club quiz book (may test you all with this later...). Inside I bought Jump To The Top, Cross Country Pony and Belinda Rides To School for a quid each.
In a rather more upmarket bookshop (one of the ones on Charing Cross Road) I got a hard back first edition of Silver Brumby Whirlwind (perhaps not worth £6, but lovely Victor Ambrus illustrations). Also a book by a writer I'd never heard of; Adventure On Ponies which I got because it's set in my home county of Dorset and even has Corfe Castle on the cover.

Got the lovely hardback illustrated Misty of Chincoteague for Christmas, which I've never read (loved King Of The Wind as a young reader). Just not sure where I'm supposed to find the time to read all these yummy books...

Went out for my birthday to a antiques and collectables place in Cheshire. Found 2 copies of Wish for a Pony by Monica Edwards none first edition (one was a Collins pony library edition the other was a Children's Press). Been as I have it already I passed. Also found Son of Black Beauty again I passed.

Happy Birthday Garej. Pity you didnt find anything you wanted tho. I preferred the old forum where it told you people's birthdays, now you have to keep checking up and I have to admit I rarely remember.

After a long drought, I recently splurged....just got a copy of Punchbowl Harvest by Monica Edwards in hardcover/dj and two from Glenn Balch's Tack Ranch series: Wild Horse and Christmas Horse.
Also managed The Mystery at Star Lake by Margaret Goff Clark...non pony author, generally (though she did write Mystery Horse). Her juvenile mystery titles can be incredibly hard to find in hardcover/dj/not ex-library ...I've been looking for this one for decades now. Found it for a whopping $10, in hardcover with dj, so very pleased!
Christmas Horse and The Mystery at Star Lake were replacements for paperbacks I already had, so I haven't completely fallen down on my "read and weed" project

That's interesting foxglove, I didn't know there was anything at Morden Hall park except a park. Will have a look sometime. I havn't felt like reading any pony books recently (or very much at all) for various reasons, should have another go at Tessa and Some Ponies.

Nice buys susan. I only have one book in the Tack Ranch series - The Midnight Colt. I haven't read it as I am one of these anal people who have to read any series in order and almost all the books in the series are hard to find here. Have you read that one Susan and if so do you think I could get away with reading it as a stand-alone?
BTW where is Morden Hall Park?

Thanks for the info Susan! According to my research for the Glenn Balch website both Wild Horse and Wild Horse Tamer were published in the UK so I may be able to get those two. Not quite enough to satisfy my OCD book reading habits haha. As well as Midnight Colt I also have Wild (Flaxy) Mare by Balch to read. The only one of his I've read so far was The Runaways which I reviewed (although not sure if I ever got round to posting the review on the forum.) Thanks also for reply to my query Charlotte. Unfortunately it's a bit far from me!

I got a very early edition of I Carried the Horn by CPT. I paid just under £7 including postage (postage was approximately half the cost). Although I have it , mines the j a Allen edition which has been updated. It is in good condition overall just the DJ is a bit chipped. The edition is a 1958 second impression. So I am happy.

That's a good find Garej the old copies of that series aren't all that common. Brings back bad memories tho as I had a copy of that book with dustwrapper. I'd just bought it from a bookshop along with a few other things and somehow left the bag with the books in at the train station. (Probably get arrested as a terrorist if I did that now or at the very least cause a bomb scare!)

Well, I fell of the wagon, big time, in book buying! I'd been so good for a while, then there were those four books, but that was just the crack in the dam. Bought five job lots, which had some treasures! Most aren't ex-lib, those that are are noted.
Buckle Horse by Barbara May - hc/dj
Glenn Balch - Horse in Danger/Stallion's Foe - hc/dj
Boxer & Beauty/Alfred Ollivant - hc/dj
H.M. Peel Gay Darius - hc/dj Pilot the Chaser - hc/dj Dido and Rogue - hc/dj Untamed hc/dj
Plus Night Storm (ex-lib, but with dj) Fury (ex-lib rebound)
Jo Furminger Blackbirds books....all ex-lib, but in dj Pony at Blackbird Cottage Blackbirds Ride a Mystery Trail Blackbirds Own Gymkhana Blackbirds and the Gift Pony Saddle Up Blackbirds
Winter Ponies/Pamela Cockerill - hc/dj Pretty Saro/Margaret Windsor - hc/dj
There were tons of others, of course, some books I wasn't interested in, some duplicates of books I already had. Shipping was (gulp) $75, but the books......$20 total for the five lots

Oh, they're here....week or so ago, just remembered that I'd been meaning to post. I was pretty tickled, you're right, even with the shipping, they were incredibly cheap.
I started reading the Blackbirds series....charming little (only 120 pages or so) comfort reads, I wonder why they didn't catch on.

I got a book called The Super Story Book for Children today. In it there is a story called A Sunday Afternoon by CPT. Makes me wonder how many more stories in annuals the PTs actually wrote. It's illustrated though not credited. I have it already but I took a chance and I hadn't seen the book before.

Susan was that cover printed in America? It's just that the dog looks as though it has got cropped ears (ugh, don't get me started on THAT!) it also looks like an American Bulldog type and I wondered if it was meant to be a Boxer - does it name the breed in the book?

Haven't read it yet, but no, the book is entirely British....I don't think any of the Mogridge books had American printings.

I kick myself because I turned up my nose at an ex-library copy a year or so ago....now I realize how rare it is
I enjoyed Gin and Murder too...I have Murder Strikes Pink and debated putting it in my Summer Challenge list, but there are other books that had been sitting on the shelf so much longer
