Congratulations - that is a real honour.
Claire these "Common Ridings" are a great Scottish tradition. I don't think there is anything like them in England.

Yes, as Tintin says, this is a great Scottish tradition that still goes on. I never imagined I would get asked to possibly represent my town, but I suspect the only reason I was asked is because of my experience with horses! If I get elected, I'm going to try my hardest to persuade the committee to find me a Clydesdale to ride on the day of the parade....!

Who nominates & votes for people? Does it have to be people who live in the town?

Post by darenc1 on Mar 6, 2013 13:58:28 GMT 1
Anyone can nominate anyone, so long as they live in the town, and are over the age of 18.
I think the nominees are just interviewed by the committee, rather than voted for by the public. Well, that's what happened to me, anyway!

It sounds very pagan, reminiscent of Herne the Hunter- I'm into pagan!

It's based on the legend that Robert The Bruce granted the lands of Penicuik to a local nobleman who killed an elusive white deer on the condition that he blew three blasts of his hunting horn whenever the King hunted in the Pentlands....
Or something!

I think being referred to as the Hunter Elect in the pub last night has finally made it sink in....!!

Great pics, Tintin. Never been any spotty horses (so far as I'm aware) in our parades - but there WAS a Clydesdale once or twice! My white jodhpurs arrived yesterday - and they're actually a good bit comfier than my normal ones! Also had to order a suit, too, and then there's the kilt...!

Crikey - do you have to have a ballgown too Daren....? ;D I've always wondered who came up with idea for white jods - surely the least practical garment ever!
