Well my assessment went OK, and not OK.
I was given Arnold to ride, a 17hh bay gelding who seemed OK. Got on no bother, started walking him around, and then it was immediately apparent that he had no "go" in him. No matter how much I squeeze, tapped, or kicked, this horse was not going to go. When he did go up a speed, I got maybe a dozen strides of trot before he decided he'd had enough and go back to a plod.
Maybe I'm just used to horses that will actually go when asked, but I must admit it was VERY frustrating!!
On the plus side, though, the owner reckoned I actually should be in the next class up! And also the evil instructor doesn't seem to be there. Every cloud and all that....!

Sounds like you did OK Daren. I'm not used to horses like that either, I usually seem to end up with the exact opposite. Mind you I did manage to win the jumping once at the riding school gymkhana with a total plodder, trotted all the way round the course but was so slow at least you had time to think what you were doing. Good job it wasn't against the clock tho! Anyway it could have been much worse - you could have got a total nut job who bucked you off! (Not to mention the dodgy instructor)

I haven't worked my legs like that in a long time - and not in a good way! They were like jelly after fifteen minutes!!

Better to go slow and look dignified (even if a little red-faced from all the exertion) than gallop off into the distance never to be seen again!

WE don't do anything exciting like that down South, it does sound great fun - so far sort of a cross between Saturday Night Fever,Dick Turpin's ride and How They Brought The Good News From Ghent To Aix!!

Well my lesson went OK-ish. On Arnold again, and this time the big sod was actually more active! I got him into trot no bother, and even managed to keep him going for more than a few strides. We went over trotting poles fine, too. Then we went for a couple of canters. The first couple I managed no bother, despite not having cantered in well over a year (not counting three piddly strides on Mouse), but then after that it all went to pieces! Kept losing my stirrups, or not getting the horse up to speed, or him just plain refusing to get above a fast trot. So, a bit half and half, really! I've got another lesson booked for Friday afternoon.

Sounds like you are getting more used to him now though Daren I bet you'll be cantering him no trouble soon

Maybe your stirrups were a bit long, thats often the case if you lose them when cantering but not trotting. Or has he just got a very bouncy canter...? Usually its the most comfortable pace but the odd horse seems to have the sort of canter that throws you up out of the saddle each stride! Sure it will all come together soon like Rosie said and Arnie sounds like a character

I'm still hoping they might find me a Clydesdale somewhere, but probably not!

Well today's lesson went much better! I rode Arnold again today, and this time we worked a wee bitty on sitting trot and canter again. Despite a mild headache, I managed a good few canters and even managed a couple of circuits!! Got another lesson on Tuesday afternoon, and this time I think I'll be riding my actual mount for the parade - a big grey Irish Draft called Monarch, who I'm sure I've ridden before. Strange thing is, I've actually kind of enjoyed the lessons a bit more than when I did before. Maybe because the mentalist instructor has gone?!

If I have ridden him before, then I remember him being very good - a real seen-it-and-done-it horse. Apparently the riding school is talking about taking us out for hacks lasting 2-4 hours. The ride on the Saturday, including in the parade, lasts for SIX HOURS!!

Crikey, six hours for a parade!!! How far do you go?? Is it all on foot and horses or do you have floats?
Reminds me of the poor unsuspecting trekkers who used to book for an all day ride, having never ridden longer than an hour before. They used to get off the horse at lunchtime, and some of them refused point blank to get back on for the ride home! ;D
