This is undoubtedly an old request but I'd appreciate some guidance. I'm hunting for an old fashioned series of pony DVD's for my daughter. Just kids having fun on ponies. No great plots mainly comprising of girls being bitchy to each other. No problem with a few villains as long as it's all black and white. I can find books OK, but here in Australia we can't recall anything on TV in the past that we can hunt for on DVD. I'm sure the BBC must have produced some excellent stuff in this genre but it hasn't found it's way here and I don't know what to look for. Probably sounds like a silly request but I'd really appreciate some help

Welcome nutwood I have Black Beauty and Follyfoot on DVD. Black Beauty is a good childrens series and Follyfoot more aimed for teenagers, although I watched it as a child and loved it. They can both be bought from network DVD www.networkdvd.net/

Chatterhappy Ponies! I used to have these as a kid, its about some ponies who can talk to each other, and they live at a riding school. Its clever cos they are real horses, not a cartoon. Im sure if you google it you can find something

Chatterhappy ponies? I'd never heard of these but as you say a little research soon told me lots. I'm ordering a DVD from the UK so hopefully will know much more in a few weeks time. Googling has also told me that there were two Black Beauty series. One in the seventies and one in the nineties. I know some seventies stuff survives really well but some is terrible. Which series would you recommend? Did anyone ever do anything with the various Pullien Thompson stories?

I haven't seen the nineties Black Beauty but the seventies series is O.K. Obviously it's dated and of its time but the quality of the recordings are better than some seventies stuff as you say. I watch it for pure nostalgia reasons

I'm ordering a DVD from the UK so hopefully will know much more in a few weeks time. Just a word of warning (been as you are in Australia) that sometimes UK dvds wont play on your DVD player. Although we both use PAL, DVDs in the UK are encoded Region 2 and Australia uses Region 4. So unless you have a region free DVD player (or are prepared to hack your co-existing one) then if it does not work, then there is nothing you can do. The P-T sisters did not have their works translated on TV. K M Peyton has had several of her books adapted for TV. Flambards is the most popular one (and available on DVD), but whether or not, it is too old for your daughter (you dont say how old she is) is the question.

Hi Nutwood, some of the 70s stuff was Ok, but then maybe cos thats what I was brought up with! The old Black Beauty show isn't too dated as it was historical anyway. White Horses was another nice 1970s horsy TV show but will have to check another thread to see if it came out on DVD at all. Sadly the Pullein-Thompson books were never made into TV shows or books although several other authors were, including K. M. Peyton. Flambards was excellent, but maybe too old for your daughter if she is very young, also there was Who Sir Me Sir. There were also several films made of Marguerite Henry's books. Misty has been released on DVD but it is quite an oldish film (1960s I think) There is also The Stables which is a British series about the kids at a real life stables, altho the stories are fictional. Here are some links: www.amazon.co.uk/Misty-DVD-Region-US-NTSC/dp/B001E1HCR8/ref=sr_1_25?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1258823243&sr=8-25www.amazon.co.uk/Stables-Vols-DVD/dp/B0009FHKFO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1258823468&sr=1-1

LOL Claire. Another one (though admittedly hard to find) is Starhill Ponies, but it is meant for younger viewers, so it may be a bit young. It would be extremely helpful if you could post how old your daughter is - we can tell you which ones are and not suitable. Oh and the second story on this DVD is about horses, I dont know how good it is or not, because I have yet to see it. www.networkdvd.net/product_info.php?cPath=29&products_id=672

Garej I wonder if the White Mane film is the same as Rene Guillot's book Wild White Stallion - if so its quite a sad ending

Many thanks everyone. More research and more packets from the UK coming up I reckon! Good tip re the different regions. Whoever dreamed that one up should be forced to watch only locally produced stuff. Being in Australia I had to tackle that particular hassle many years ago as so much good stuff is from different regions. My daughter is just turning six. Her favourite books are the Linda Chapman Secret Unicorn books. There's a nice balance between the human interest and the equine (is a unicorn equine?) interest. Not having had a daughter before I had no idea how nasty things get between groups of girls. Ours is well out of such things at the moment but it's easy to see how it develops. Hence my desire to avoid DVD's which are full of disputes and put downs. We've avoided Pony Pals for that reason. When she's older and has a bit of judgement I won't mind, but at the moment, "monkey see, monkey do"!

Hello Nutwood. I have 2 girls of a similar age and they like the Chatterhappy ponies and the Star Hill ponies, although we have them on video not DVD so I am not sure they were released on DVd. Yes I am a dinosaur still using video lol. I sympathise with you in regard to the bitchy girl element which seems to have even invaded pony books. I dread mine getting to that age and having to cope with it.

nutwood: Follyfoot and Flambards would be too old for your daughter. They are meant for teenagers upwards, and a lot of stuff would either be too dark or to old for them. A lot of episodes of Flambards have no horses which would probably hold interest for a teenager but it is probable your daughter wont understand it.
Both Chatterhappy and Starhill ponies would be fine for your daughter.
The Saddle Club is another tv series that is available, again it would be too old for your daughter at the moment (it's aimed at 10-12 year olds).
I am not sure about Black Beauty, again I have a feeling that she is slightly too young (again a 10 year old would be fine) if I am remembering correct from memory.
Heartland is another tv series which has a lot of horsey content, but again is teenage + so once again, that is not really suitable for her at the moment.

If I can cast my memory back into the mists of time, I am sure I started watching Black Beauty TV series when I was about 5 years old so even tho a 6 year old may not get it all I think they will be entertained, and I dont think there was anything really nasty in the prog.

Thanks for the sympathy darkhorse. I'm glad I'm not the only one to look askance at some of these plots. I'm considering Black Beauty. I don't really care if the concepts are too old, kids take their own meanings from things even if they don't get it all. I more worry about anything nasty in there, so thanks Claire. I wonder a bit about how fast kids grow up now. I've just started reading my daughter Malcolm Saville. She found the book on the shelf - "Daddy, can we read this.." and in Mystery at Witchend, the twins are nine years old. There's nine year olds now reaching puberty but in the forties they were the babies of the Lone Pine Club!

I'm sure your kids will like the 70s Black Beauty nutwood. Like Claire says, there isn't any nasty stuff in it and every episode has a happy ending. It's mostly Black Beauty helping the children in various adventures

Yup it was good old fashioned family viewing. We all used to sit round the TV watching it, mum, dad, brother, granny and me. OMG I sound like I came from an episode of the Waltons! ;D But it was a nicer more innocent era for kids then.

From what Claire has said it seems that I was wrong about Black Beauty. Must be my memory then!

Well, I've just added the complete series of Black Beauty to the list of DVD's that may, or may not, turn up this side of Christmas. I'm now seriously thinking of selling a certain pony to fund this expedition into pony DVD's. It occurs to me that DVD's don't eat much. Ok, a bit of electricity, but let's face it, power's cheaper than hay!

It was a cartoon on when I was younger. Its about 3 ponies and their owners. When i say cartoon.. I believe they were... like figurines.. like Postman Pat! Well yeah I didnt really like it much, but the ponies talk and rescue people and stuff.

Ok, a bit of electricity, but let's face it, power's cheaper than hay! Dont do it nutwood! For some of us DVDs are the closest we get to the real thing <sobs> Does your daughter watch the silver brumby animated series? If so does she enjoy it? I was not that impressed by it myself and wonder what other people think of it.
