She's beautiful mysteryarab, well done you! Pumble was always black but he has turned jet black now - he was a bit smoky when he was little. Hi darkhorse (it's good to see you) I think he must be nearly 6 months now so don't tell pumble but I think a trip to the vet may be on the cards!

I am NOT at this point going to mention about the obscene prices vets' charge for neutering! Good for you zoe for being a responsible owner - but how I wish something could be done to make the operations more affordable! Surely if the RSPCA would fork out for subsidised spaying or neutering, then the money saved in rehomeing generations of unwanteds would be worth it, and multiply that by thousands of animals! Oh dear, and I wasn't going to mention it either!

There are some vet clinics up here that do it cheap. I will try and remember it may be a national chain.

How much is neutering? When we had our cats done in Italy it was around 30euro for male or female - that was about £23 (better exchange rate) - 2 years ago.

Yes how much? (cringing!) not that it makes a difference - the thought of unwanted baby pumbles is too horrid

Trying to dredge my memory up from when I last saw prices at the vet. I think it is around £30-40 for a tomcat and more for a female, maybe £50-60. This is for the North, prob more expensive in the south. Dont know about dogs but they are usually more.

I would say that it is with cats because they go out unattended! Tom cats can get in such nasty fights too - and he might get beaten up! garej is the cat expert though! I hate it when pet owners are advised to do their dogs so young, as they never grow in mind and body quite as they should, but I do agree that anything is better than unwanted pups so it is the lesser of two evils.

Yes I agree they can father kittens at 6 months. I think I got mine all done about that age. Poor Pumble little does he know what is in store for him! ;D

Please please get your cats neutered. If they are not, they are more inclined to wander off and get FIV/FeLV. Both have serious impact on their life, and they could spread FIV to others. Both of mine are FIV positive, and they got it from an unneutered male.
(FIV is the equivalent of AIDS in us. FeLV is Feline Leukemia. FeLV has no cure or treatment once they test positive - the only option is putting them to sleep. FIV positive cats have to be kept indoors constantly and away from other FIV negative cats.)
Some vets will do males at 4 months, in reality it depends on whether the cat's testicles have dropped. Some vets have this notition of even refusing to look before they are 6 months old though.
As for cost, it does vary. My vet (well the one Pickle is registered to) charges £43.90 for a female, £34.93 for a male. The difference is due to the time really - a male is done in 10 mins whereas a female take 20 mins (plus the time it takes for her to go under). The vet that Tigger is registered too (different one) charges £49 for a female and I know another localish one that charges £55! But the one that Tigger is registered to is known for overcharging.
The RSPCA and the Cats Protection only help if the owner is on benefits. Simply because veterinary treatment is the most costly expense. As they are reliant on the goodwill of the public for money, it is better that the richer owners pay for it. (Benefits includes Working Tax Credit btw.) That way they can spend their money on more essential things rather than things which are (in comparison) more affordable.
The best bet is to phone your vet and ask how much they charge. That way you know how much it cost and have time to save up!

In Oz the unwanted kitten problem became so overwhelming that now the RSPCA only sell their kittens desexed. It's done at around 5-6 weeks which may seem extremely young, but they found that people who took kittens from the RSPCA were STILL not taking their kittens into the vet on time to be desexed, even though they were given a voucher to get it done free, ie. it was included in the price of the animal at a subsidised rate. (c.$195 vetted, vaccinated and desexed).
Next we need to BAN pet shops from being able to sell kittens and puppies!

Next we need to BAN pet shops from being able to sell kittens and puppies! Fortunately over here most pet shops over here do not sell kittens and puppies (actually the only place I have seen them in the past 10 years for sale was Harrods last year). Also a lot of places (certainly in my area) a lot no longer sell any animals of any kind, but concentrate on pet supplies. However you do get a lot of people still putting notices up about kittens for sale (or even free!).

One of my daft neighbour's cats is about to have kittens. She said with a laugh that she had left it too late to get her neuetered and this is the result. I tried to keep my big mouth shut but was annoyed at the irresponsible attitude. What is going to the happen to the kittens that is my worry. I am terrified that I will end up with one or more! When I did the Neutering voucher van last year, there was several people who told me (and the others) that their cat was on the fourth (or more) litter. Personally it does not surprise me as it is not unusual, but yes you do have to worry about the kittens. Also the mother could be infected with FIV. If she is on any kind of benefit I will try to get her to contact either the RSPCA or Cats Protection, as they will assist with neutering. Tell her to do it now, because once the kittens are 4 weeks old they can be done.
