£200 is going bookseller rate for the book with dj. Yeah Law of the wilds is usually cheap. What did you see a copy of untamed on ebay for 99p? If I missed that will be in deep depths of depression BTW who ever asked about illus of Mystery Pony (cant remember and its on previous page) it is illus by Wendy Marchant. Doesnt say if she did cover but I suspect so as it looks like her style of horse.

Claire....my guess would be Fury, as I know it was published in the US, and it's not one of the early books in Pilot series, which you've reviewed, so I assume you have copies....those are the only books of Peel's I know of that had US printings.

I havent read the bottom two of those cally. Let me know if there any good! Havent got anything really exciting lately but a couple I havent read before: The bottom one is apparantly by Gillian Baxter under her married name with Marion Mould (Coakes) who older forum members may remember as a showjumper. Just started reading it and is similar to the 3 jays books where the showjumper and her horses are characters in a fictional story. Also got a copy of If wishes were horses with dj. Scanned the dj to put on my non jacketed copy then its away to sell! Heres a pic of the cover:

I was going to ask if Marion Coakes was Marion Mold but then I read the bit underneath.
I suppose I count as an old git since I remember Marion Mold and Stroller(or was it Striker?) Yep, definately an old git with failing memory!!!!

I like the cover of that one (Sue Elaine draws a horse) but the title seems a bit odd

Claire is the Catherine Harris one about the Cuckoo Mill characters?

Kunuma no it is a different story entirely.
Zoe the character of sue-elaine is an artistic type (hence the hippy garb ;D) who likes to draw, especially horses, which is where the title comes from. Must admit tho it is one of the strangest titles of a pony book I've come across. Hmm...could be a good idea for a thread.

Just finished reading Sue-Elaine. I was quite impressed by it. It was similar to the 3 jays books where the real life show jumper and her horses were characters in a fictional story. It was even written in frst person too. But altho I have a soft spot for the 3 jays books, this one was much better by far. One of the main gripes with the 3 Jays is that the horses arent really made into characters and there doesnt seem much of a relationship between them and their riders. The opposite is true inthis book. In fact the plot revolves around the deep relationship a person can have with one particular horse. The real life close bond between Marion the show jumper and her horse is echoed by that of the fictional one. Could be Gillian Baxters superior writing skill but Marion does come across better than Pat Smythe in her books. Oops seem to have wittered on a bit here but really this is worth reading.

Claire....congratulations....the Spooner and Peel books are wonderful finds, and if you haven't read Oxus yet, you're in for a treat!
garej...only one, but it's a good one! I got it just a year ago, from a friend for my birthday....I love that cover art, and the story is sweet.
and, erm, yes, I'm afraid Milkman's Cob was me....bit more than I really planned to pay for it, but it had been spoken of SO highly here...grin, there are some high expectations to be met...I've never paid that much for a book by an author whose work I've never read before!!!

I havent read any of my three before. Milkmans Cob is quite nice tho I didnt think it was anything outstanding, but I know one or two people really loved it.
Loved Mandrake, its quite an unusual story, although I still think Crab the Roan is the best of her early books.

Claire please tell me what the Far Distant Oxus is about - and where does Arthur Ransome come into it?? (Closet Swallows and Amazons fan here )

Kunuma...re Oxus....Katherine Hull and Pamela Whitlock were girls at school together, back in the 30s...they wrote The Far Distant Oxus together, and shipped the manuscript off to a favorite author, Arthur Ransome, with a request that he show it to his publisher.
You'd think it would have been returned with a nice, but firm note, but no! He did read it, liked it, and handed it off to his publisher (or maybe agent?). At any rate, it was published, and was followed up with two sequels, Escape to Persia and Oxus in Summer.
All the books are more or less about siblings from two families, plus one mysterious boy, camping and mucking about on ponies during holidays, with a bit of punting on the "Oxus" tossed in for good measure (the children rename all the places around them in England, taking the names from a poem...a poem about adventure and explorers! The Oxus was a river in Persia...current day name would be Amu Darya in Iran). Like Swallows and Amazons, they're not really books that can be described without making them sound unbelievably boring....they're excellent books, and well worth checking out, especially for someone like you who likes both the S&A type of books and pony books too.
