Hi folks, you can still add comments for A Job With Horses, but I thought we should choose a book to read for the Spring Group Read, as we have at last in the UK been promised some Spring weather after 6 months of grim winter, snow and rain.
Any suggestions welcomed - as long as it's something farily easy to get hold of and lowish cost.

Hi all, just bumping this thread as I think my last post has gone un-noticed. Need a book for our late spring read. If nobody has suggestions I'll think of something myself.

I did notice, but given that I totally missed the last book, due to my "emergency" embroidery project (completed, framed and on the walls!), I thought I'd better just go with the flow with whatever everyone else wants

Does it have to be Spring related?
I'm sitting here at the computer and looked over at the pony book shelves and saw Kathleen McKenzie, seem to be easy to get and many titles, presently I've only read Jumping Jan
Just a thought?

I think I have most of MacKenzie's pony books, and have read all except Nancy and the Carrs, but so long ago that I could re-read......she is a nice author. One thought came to mind: I think we had talked about doing Holiday Summer by Decie Merwin at one point, but shelved it for actual summer..but then we started doing the summer challenge, and it never happened

I was sort of keeping Pony and Trap by MacKenzie in mind for the Christmas read this year (who say's I'm not well prepared!) but if I change the Christmas read to something else we could do her. Unfortunately I can't find my copy of Holiday Summer anywhere.
Well done on finishing your embroidery project Susan, it always takes me forever to finish a cross stitch picture!

mmmmm...I don't know, Pony and Trap is a really good idea for Christmas, and it's getting harder to find easily available/inexpensive/not crap winter books.
I'd go for something else for spring, there are soooo many more pony books set during spring/summer!

Just tossing it out, kind of on the lines of a Kathleen MacKenzie.....maybe a Peggie Cannam? She seems to be pretty available and cheap. That would save Pony and Trap for Christmas?

I have been going through a bunch of fantasy books at the moment, reading Queen by Aimee Carter, got it from my local public library.

Peggie Cannam is quite a good choice as she has written a wide range of different stories, I've got most of the books except Hoof Beats which is not really fiction anyhow and Corn and Carrot Tops, so I could lend folk a copy of most. Other than that, have we ever done a Hilda Boden story before? They are cheap and easy to find, also some are fairly short! Folks let me know if any preferance for either author. I'd like to get this set up by the weekend. That gives us about 5 to 6 weeks to read it before the Sunmner Challenge gets into swing.

I feel like we did Pony Girl at some point, but can't pinpoint when. I've read that and Pony Boy, and have Joanna's Special Pony in the omnibus.
I've got most of the Cannams, missing Alpha and Omega...I don't have She Wanted a Pony or Corn and Carrot Tops, but have everything else.

Peggy Cannam sounds good to me, have quite a selection easy reach on the shelf. Hilda Boden will have to scavenge amongst the boxes in the garage to find those!

I dont believe it! I thought well let's do Black Fury by Peggie Cannam as it's a boy character for a change, then I skimmed through it and remembered it's set over Christmas time, so that's 2 flippin ones I've picked out that are set at Christmas, what odds on doing this! Oh well at least I've got the next 2 Christmas reads sorted in advance! So I've finally picked out Triple Bar, which is my fav Cannam book and due for a re-read. I can lend my copy to anyone who would like one.

LOL.....well, it's a good thing, really, because good Christmas reads can be hard to find :-).
I've got Triple Bar, will start over the weekend!
Maybe we should start a thread....."Holiday books"? Just for people to post as they read, or flip through, whatever....you know, "just read X, it's set at Halloween"; "was flipping through Y, realized it takes place over Easter", so that when a particular holiday comes up, there will be some options sorted? When there are enough, you might want a list on your web page?

Maybe will start a thread where people can add suggestions.

And speaking of planning ahead, I seem to recall we have said we'd do the lovely Mr. McFadden's Hallowe'en for October!
I don't think I've ever read a Peggie Cannam! I keep hoping we'll do a book I already have because I have quite a stack of unread ones, but it's not happening. Maybe I can pick up Triple Bar so I can join in.

Hi all, well for once I'm ahead of myself as we picked the Halloween read for this year a while back. It's going to be McFadden's Halloween by Rumer Godden. I'm just giving the Reading Challenge a few more days to finish off then I'll set up a thread for the Halloween reading circle.

Not Really Christmas but have we ever done Jump To The Top and the boxing day hunt? Easy read and i bet most people already have it/it's cheap and easy to find. Or what about the Jinny with the Christmas bit in it (sorry forget which one, Horse of Fire or Chestnut gold?)
Anything christmassy in any of KM Peytons books?

Hi Claire, you'd actually already suggested a couple for this Christmas, back in spring:
I've got both, could do either!

I've got Pony & Trap - Kathleen Mackenzie so this would be my choice

Lol I didn't completely forget Pony and Trap but when I checked up on it a few days ago, it appears to be set from January onwards, so nothing Christmassy in it, although it is a winter-themed book and there's snow in it! I'm happy to do that one if folk aren't bothered that there's nothing really festive in it. Otherwise we could leave that one for our later winter read and select something more Christmassy for this one.

There are two I always associate with Christmas, one is All Change, and the other one is Ponies of Cuckoo Mill Farm.I usually read them every Christmas, even when I have to use a magnifier to do so!!

I think we read All Change as a group read a while back. We haven't done Ponies of Cuckoo Mill Farm or any by that author as far as I can recall.

Gosh I've got no memory at all nowadays!
The only other one that springs to mind is Jill's Gymkhana, Horse of Fire has already been mentioned, there is a very childish one called Issy and the Christmas \Pony - plus one of the Jean books has a Christmas in it because I remember her buying all the animals presents!

I was remembering one of the Jean ones too....was it the first one? It seems to me she gets a lot of stuff to take care of Cavalier with one Christmas. It could be a good option, because many already have it, and it's available on kindle too.
I don't mind it just being a winter read, if everyone wants to go with Pony and Trap....not a lot of time between now and Christmas to read it anyway.....Christmas eve is two weeks from yesterday! Probably a bunch of other winter reads out there too....Winter Ponies by Pamela Cockrill (sp?), White Winter by Eleanor Helme. There must be others.....
Or what about your other thought, Claire.....Black Fury by Cannam?
There are some US books that have Christmas (Christmas Horse by Glen Balch, Bright Spurs by Armine von Tempski), but have left it too late to try to source copies to send over....next year, maybe?

Pony and Trap is fine by me. I've a copy of that one I've had for ages and never got round to reading. I'm not really bothered about the book being 'Christmassy' get enough of that elsewhere.
