We did Ponies of Cuckoo Farm for Christmas 2013, here's the link to the discussion....I remember particularly, because the kids were such ungrateful little beasts Oh dear senility must be setting in....I do rememember us reading it now that you mention it but it had COMPLETELY slipped my mind. We'll stick with Pony and Trap then as a few people already seem to have it. I'll set up a thread for it asap

LOL, been there, done that, Claire....I expect we all have Will start on Pony and Trap asap...I'm taking a vacation day Thursday, to run a few errands, but curling up with book in the afternoon would be a good way to round off the day!

Hi Claire, are we still doing the new Gillian Baxter book for this month's/next month's reading group? I've just bought it with an Amazon voucher I got at Christmas and I'm really looking forward to reading it.

Which Gillain Baxter? The Bobby and Shelta one or vacant possession? I am just reading the Bobby one but also got the other on kindle so will have to make notes for myself if so x

Hi all any ideas for a Halloween spooky read. Must get cracking on that as it's only a month or so away !

Not spooky but very immersed in autumn and nature -- Heroes & Hounds by Bill Miller (available as ebook or pb, I can obtain and send copies if chosen) Eleanor Jones - Dreams or Demons OR Circle of Blue.

Eleanor Jones wrote quite a few spooky stories, so good choice Rallycairn. Circle of Blue I really like, it's very unusual. It's not really a ghostly one but it is supernatural. Poses the question do Halloween stories have to have ghosts or gruesome happenings or just something supernatural...?

I think it's more fantasy/time slip but I just posted a link to free copies of Angela Dorsey abandoned via book funnel so everyone could potentially access it free.

I love Abandoned. Seems like we may have done it before, but maybe I'm just thinking of a review thread. If we haven't, I think it's a great idea.

I love Abandoned too. We did do Angela Dorsey's Freedom for one Halloween read. I think we have discussed Abandoned somewhere on here but whether it was a review or not can't recall. I'll do a search. Pretty sure we haven't done any Eleanor Jones books.

I have Circle of Blue and another Eleanor Jones book, but can't remember which one it is. I haven't read either of them yet.

I've just checked and it is Dreams and Demons.

I think we'll go for an Eleanor Jones book rather than Abandoned as I've found a few comments about that one on the forum already. I quite fancied doing Circle of Blue but my copy seems to be buried in a box somewhere due to house decoration and I don't fancy buying another copy just for one read. I have her other books to hand and as Darkhorse already has Dreams or Demons I think we'll go for that one - it's also more spooky than Circle of Blue. It's a nice short read too. Should be easy for USA forumites to get hold of, a bit harder in the UK but I can lend someone my copy and there is also a digital copy available to borrow on the Internet Archive/Open Library website. I'll set up a thread for it asap.

Hi all, time for us to think of a seasonal read for over Christmas time. Festive or snow-related preferably! Suggestions please

Christmas Horse by Glenn Balch....really cheap, but may be hard to find outside the US Winter Ponies by Pamela Cockerill Ann Goes Hunting by John Smyth Northern Lights by Lorna Hill Stormchaser and the Silver Mist by Belinda Rapley
I'd suggest Jean Slaughter Doty's Winter Pony, but it really is a follow on from Summer Pony

Apologies for slow reply Susan, have not been too well the last few days.
Some excellent suggestions there. I'll do some research onto sourcing the books both here and in USA. There's also Wendy Douthwaite's Christmas Pony which I know is easy to find everywhere. Also, looking back on last years discussion before Christmas, we had a suggestion of Black Fury by Peggie Cannam, again not sure how easy that is to find.

Sorry you've been under the weather, Claire, hope you're feeling better soon! I feel like we did Christmas Pony, but it could just be because it's been in the discussion mix for a Christmas read and I'm remembering that

I don't think we ever did Christmas Pony by Wendy Douthwaite; we did another Christmas Pony by Sylvia Green 2 or 3 years back.
Unfortunately Christmas Horse, Winter Ponies, Northern Lights are not that easy to get hold of in both UK and USA. Black Fury is, strangely enough, easier to find in the USA than here! I do have a copy of that one I can lend out though. The Belinda Rapley book is easy to find though it's part of a series and another one that is also easy and part of a series is A Riverdale Christmas by Amanda Wills, which I have just been reading to review.
To sum up I think we should choose one of the following: A Riverdale Christmas, Stormchaser and the Silver Mist, Black Fury or Christmas Pony (Douthwaite). Black Fury is probably the least Christmassy of them but it's longer and has a bit more depth. They are all pretty good reads. If anyone has any preferances please post here in the next few days. I'll make the final decision in around a week's time.
Don't forget we also are going to have a Winter Reading Challenge this winter, a mini version of the Summer one, which will start after our Christmas read.

I don't have any preference because I am not participating but I was wondering about the Winter Reading Challenge. Very glad it's going ahead. Unlike the Summer Reading Challenge I am not able to do rosettes. I am going to participate in the Winter Reading Challenge.
Ginslinger I havent forgotten about your rosette it's just that I havent been near the Post Office lately. I am definitely going to post it this week as I need to post something that's going to Australia and the last posting date is soon.

Hi Garej, haven't finalised the details of the Winter Challenge yet. I was thinking maybe 3 books, one from the 'star reads' section of the summer challenge, and maybe 6-8 weeks to complete. I will work out the final details and set it up after the Christmas period is over.

Hi Claire....I had Black Fury, but it went in my "read and weed" binge over the summer I'm game to try any of the others, though it would be better to know asap, as I'll need to buy and have it delivered before I can read

My vote would be for Black Fury as I can see it on the shelf, some of the other suggestions are hard to find or too expensive.

I have Christmas Pony so I would prefer that one or the Amada Wills book as I have read quite a few others in the series.

Well folks have decided we will do Christmas Pony by Wendy Douthwaite, as it's really easy to find on both sides of the Atlantic. (Not sure about Australia though) and it's short and sweet. Also picking Fury would have ruled out Susan which I don't want to do! Hope this is OK with everyone. I'll set up a thread for it now....
