OK it is now official - the second engineer has disovered that not only can I not get a signal through the aerial, I can't get a satellite signal either! I didn't know it was possible to live in a place that couldn't get TV,but I should have known if there was such a place, I would finish up living in it!! I sure know now why the previous tenants had no TV!! Does anyone know of any way to get any TV?? I've been told that the schemes which enable you to watch it on the computer such as Sky will use up all your allowance of broadband - but this is all way out of my knowledge!

I've had no TV for nearly 2 years now and can't say I have missed it. You can get most of the stuff on any of the catch up sites, all the channels have them now. Not sure about the sky one but they dont use a huge amount of download allowance (unless your allowance is really small) Most of the other stuff you can usually download from somewhere (until the Govt crack down on it as has been proposed) and play it on the VLC player as mentioned in my PM. There is a site somewhere you can do an estimate of how much download allowance you use, it asks you how many hours you use catch up sites, etc, etc and works it out from your answers. I'll see if I can find it and put up a link. Even I only use an estimated 40ish gig and I use the computer a tremendous amount and download loads of stuff, so I cant see you using anywhere near that. Or you could change to an unlimited internet package! BTW hope you are not paying your tv licence!

Does anyone know of any way to get any TV?? I've been told that the schemes which enable you to watch it on the computer such as Sky will use up all your allowance of broadband - but this is all way out of my knowledge! In reality, this depends on your broadband package. Broadband packages, give you an monthly allowance in gb. When that is used up, either a) you cant download anything for the rest of the month or b) they charge per gb, which if happens on a regular basis, will end up costing more than whatever your monthly fee is. Usually downloading things such as BBC iplayer will use up a lot. However there are some companies which offer unlimited usage or a very generous gb package. The package my parents have does offer unlimited usage. So you need to check the terms and conditions of your broadband package and see what exactly monthly allowance you are allowed per month, and also what happens in case you use up your monthly allowance. Usually you are tied into a 12 month contract, next time your contract is up, I would shop around first and swap onto another provider which offers a package with either unlimited usage or a very generous gb allowance. If you live in a 3G area (your mobile phone website should tell you) and you own a mobile phone with 3G capability, then you can watch some channels via your mobile. Quality will vary depending on the signal. At present, the BBC do not offer TV via your mobile phone, but ITV is there. However, some channels (i.e. ITV) broadcast "as live" (meaning that sans, regional variations and regional adverts you get what you normally see via your TV, for example 7pm Mon-Fri would be Emmerdale) you do actually need a TV licence. Some channels (for example Sky One) dont broadcast "as live" & therefore you do not need an TV licence for that. However, that may incur (depending on your mobile service provider and contract) extra costs. Haffyfan: You do say that you are too tight to pay for satellite, does that mean Sky? There is Freesat which does not have a monthly fee, all you have to pay is for the box (costs vary depending on what you want, for example if you want a plain old receiver or one with recording facility) and installation if there is not a dish present on your house (you can use a Sky dish if it is fairly recent i.e. installed within the past 10 years so there is no need to fork out for a new one). If you do want a Freesat box but not the actual installation, buy via Amazon because they are cheaper than Argos. If you can afford that, then that is the option. You dont get a huge variety of channels, but you do get for free all the ITV & BBC channels (including HD). Once you pay for the Freesat box & dish (if needed) then the only other extra cost is normal running ones (i.e. TV licence and electric) associated with getting TV via any other medium. kunuma: I would not have thought it was possible in these times not to get any telly! My parents cannot get Freeview or cable but they can get Sky (and have been doing so for the past 10 years). Has your area gone digital yet? If it has not done so, then perhaps after your area has gone, then you can get Freeview.

Here's the link to that site I was telling you about which works out how much of your allowance you will use. For example watching 10 hours of video such as iplayer will use approx 4.7 gig. Talk Talk for example has a monthly allowance of 40 but even if you have only half that you should have plenty enough for watching quite a few hours TV. What is your monthly allowance btw? www.broadband.org/usage_calculator.htmlI agree with garej that its practically unheard of not to be able to get a TV signal nowadays. Did he say WHY you cant get it? Maybe it just needs a newer aerial or it moving.

;D Yep, I didn't think it was possible to live in an house that didn't get TV either!! I know better now! And I am still paying a flipping TV licence!! It is all because of the changeover - this area does get Freeview, but I thought I was in trouble when we discovered that none of the mobile phone networks worked here - (I tried to work the computer off a mobile at first!) The previous tenants must have gone through the whole rigmarole I have just been through, as there is a new aerial, covered with booster boxes, but there is no signal at all from it. So I then waited a month for the next engineer, who tried to set up a Freesat - but discovered after wandering around with the sat dish for ages, that there is no satellite signal here either! That's why no one has ever bothered to put a satellite dish on the house! I lurve technology, NOT!

Get on to the TV licence people ASAP you shouldnt be paying for it! Oh well you will just have to live with the alternatives to telly. I'm proof it can be done. Its funny I find it extremely irritating now when I go into 'normal' people's houses and they have the telly blaring away

Oh dear, has the engineer tried a very long & high pole? Some of the remote houses in my parents village can only get a signal from their dishes having had to put them on top of a long pole situated at the end of the drive (because of the trees and mountains are blocking the signal). Perhaps trying that may be the solution. If they [the dishes] are put on top of the house then the householders get nothing at all.
If you try that (or it is not a viable option) then I am afraid the various online "catch up" players is the solution, along with changing your internet package/provider (if applicable).
