I took a photo of the building in my previous post this morning at 8.05 am (which is a good thing I took so early because of the lack of traffic because to get a decent shot I had to stand in the middle of the road). I edited out the sign above the door because it tells you the name of the village. Obviously the photo in the previous post was taken on a sunny day, later on in the day. Now this is an interesting old building, which I took this photo with the idea that one day I may paint it. It's obviously some sort of converted mill/grain store which is now a private house. If it is your house or something and you object to it being there lmk.

Interesting photos garej. I like the ducks too I like the 'ugly house' tho I agree its name is a bit harsh I think 'interesting house' would be more apt.

I like the 'ugly house' tho I agree its name is a bit harsh I think 'interesting house' would be more apt. I dont know why it is called The Ugly House. It isn't named after Mr Ugly who built it (two brothers originally built it using an old law meaning that if the walls, roof and smoking chimney were all built between sunset and sunrise you could claim the freehold of the land. Fortunately this law no longer stands.) though. It's a Grade 2 listed building and has 4 acres of gardens (also free to go in during daylight hours).

Great pics Sarah. The "old and new" ones are interesting. I'm going to be an old fossil and say I prefer the older buildings in them.

A very old building - this is the oldest Anglo Saxon church in Britain which I visited the other day. Its really tiny. It dates from sometime in the 7th century! Also it was made from stone from a nearby Roman fort so its stonework is nearly 2000 years old!!! Also took a pic of this interesting gravestone, check out the skull and crossbones!

Your picture reminded me of this headstone I saw last year. If I remember correctly the chap was killed by a falling branch whilst he was doing some tree pruning in the graveyard which is depicted on the headstone.

A pic of Durham Cathedral taken from the River Wear. This is one of the finest cathedrals in the country, and its not far away. In fact I have visited in loads of times but its always breathtaking. The small building on the river is an old mill, now an archeological museum.

I do agree that it is lovely - I used to live just outside Durham (a place called Langley Park) and it was on my doorstep. Whenever I went to Durham I used to always go near the cathedral.

Garej - I drove past the Ugly House yesterday - we were late leaving Llanberis though - so didn't have time to stop and look as we needed to get back to London. Would have prefered to stay in Snowdonia mind!

Amercia has no castles..... no that's not true. There are a few. I'll hunt them down.
We don't have buildings as old as ya'll do.
I don't know where Susan lives, but I am in Tenn.....
There are some old buildings downtown, mostly we have old barns.... I'll try and get pics of them.

Went to York at the weekend where there are loads of fantastic old buildings. This is the Black Swan Inn the oldest inn in York from the early 1400s. What is even more interesting is that there is a 'cat' climbing up the wall! I've been to York loads of times but didnt know that there used to be lifesize sculptures of cats on a lot of the buildings which were put there to frighten off mice and rats and for good luck. These cat scultpures have recently been recreated by a modern artist and appear on a number of buildings throughout York. There is a trail you can do following a route which takes them all in called the Fabulous York Cat Trail. We did a few but didnt have time to look for them all so next time I go I'm gonna do the whole trail and take pics. Here is the cat on the Inn:

York is one of my fav cities. I go there 2 or 3 times a year. It looks lovely at Christmas with all the lights and little streets, like something out of Dickens. Forgot to say there was also a festival going on with ice sculptures and I took some pics of them which are on my facebook page if anyone is interested: www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.2606525696216.129260.1647143015&type=1&l=c30b5963f1(public link - you dont have to have a facebook account to view)

Never been to Bettys! Normally go to the pub and if in Summer have a picnic in the park.
Is that the book shop beside the Minster? There's not as many as there used to be.
