Hay on Wye? I've been thinking about going there for a while to check out the bookshops, I think I'm only about an hour away so it's not too far! Have any of you lot been? and is it really the mecca of second hand books it's supposed to be?

I've been there, last summer. It was brilliant. You should visit this shop, it's a little out of town, but really good. childrensbookshop.com/index.shtmlBring a couple of coins though, you might have to cross the bridge!!

Was really near there the Easter Weekend but didn't call in as I thought everything would be closed (it was the Easter Sunday) - would love to go though! Enjoy if you do.

That's weird! Just seen a programme on BBC4 called Hidden Histories and it had Hay on Wye in it. It was mostly about the castle but it did very fleetingly mention the bookshops.
I'm glad it was on, because now I stand a good chance of persuading my other half to take me there as he likes Castles ;D ;D

I havent been as its too far from me but I would like to go. My parents have and enjoyed it altho they said the books were on the expensive side. I have been to the Scottish equivalent at Wigtown which is interesting. There is a fab shop there selling nothing but children's books called I think The Box of Frogs. It has a big section on horse and pony stories too! Also if anyone is going to Edinburgh in the near future there is an excellent children's bookshop at the bottom of the Royal Mile which again has a horse and pony section.

I have not been as it is quite far. Though I live in Wales, getting from North to South is quite difficult as there is no direct route (whichever way you go, you are on A roads). There is Rose's book which I have bought from them tons and I have been impressed with their service. www.stellabooks.com/Rosie: I saw that programme too!

I went last year with my brother. It's an awesome place! Just allow yourself all day to get round all the bookshops! It's a pretty little town to wander round anyway, and there are food places and other shops too (inc. a tack shop) but obviously the main features are BOOKS! Millions of them! There are some specialist shops that won't appeal to pony book hunters - unless you also like Sherlock or jigsaws - but plenty of general booksellers.
There is a children's book seller, lovely place to have a browse, but not cheap, I warn you! I saw lots there I would have loved to buy, but hadn't enough money. One or two of the more general ones have sections for children's books and some group the pony books together, but when I was there, there really wasn't a lot.
I would love to go a couple of times a year, but it's a two hour drive from my neck of the woods and you really need to go with a full purse or you'll regret it!!

I've just persuaded my other half to take me later on in the year, although by the sounds of it I'll just be browsing and not buying! Be nice to say I've been there though. Garej, we'll be looking at the castle which was on the programme

I'm going in 3 weeks time - kids got football tournaments for the next few saturdays (next sat my daughter is playing in sheffield and son in hereford - I'll have to split in 2!!!) What bridge Lily? I'm looking forward to it and hope I can afford something, I had a feeling it mightr be expensive. If anyone is looking for a particular book and want me to keep an eye out for it, let me know.

If you go to that children's bookshop and continue along that road, driving in the direction away from Hay on Wye, you have to go over a bridge which requires a toll.
