Have been wondering what the oldest pony book (apart from Black Beauty!) is. I have had one from 1912 called The Story of Heather by May Wynne. And also heard of one called The Don and the Dancer the Story of a Dartmoor Pony, (told by himself ) by Maud Scrimgeour published around 1907
I 'm sure I've seen an older one somewhere but I can't remember what it was called. Anyone else come across anything older than these or anything else pre-1920s?

I dont have anything older than yours, but I do have a few books that date from the 1940s or earlier.
I do have a very old horse care book though.
I think my oldest pony story books are The Chestnut Pony by Pamela Phillips, which dates from 1939, and Stormy: An American Mustang which dates sometimes during the Second World War (there isnt a date as such, but it does have a War Economy stamp in it).
I also won a pony book called On'y Tony and the Dragon which dates from 1938.

My oldest is a 1927 copy of Topper, I have lots of thirties ones then but nothing as old as yours. I love the ones with dedications....the owner is most likely dead but I like working out how old they might be....especially if it was a birthday inscription.

My copy of Heather is inscribed 1912 doesnt actually have date on it so may possibly be older. I did have a 1929 copy of Exmoor Lass and a 1st edit of Moorland Mouise 1928? which I sold. I am sure tho that I saw a horse story in a bookshop a while back which was 1800 and something wish I could remember it.

Oh talk about opening up a hornets nest! Working out the date of books is sometimes soooo hard! In the majority of cases the last date will be the date is was published but not always which is why you get a load of daft sods on ebay putting books for sale saying they are 1st editions when they are definitely not. Sometimes it just means the date of the last edition, especially on paperbacks, the book can have been printed many times since the last date shown but because it is just a reprint of the same edition it does not show another date.
Books which were pre-40s often have no date on at all so you can only work out the edition if you know what it looks like already, or sometimes you have to look at other titles on the dust jacket if it has one. The worst thing is when there is a reprint straight after the first edition but it does not say so, so you end up selling the book as a first then get a nasty email from someone...yes it has happened to me with a non-pony book I sold! A booksellers job is not an easy one!
BTW exmoorfan what dates were your copies of the Heather books?
