Thanks so much exmoorfan. Am finding it hard to sink in a the moment. He had a stroke this morning and the vet also told me it looked like he may have had the onset of luekemia so I had to make the hard decision to let him go in peace. He perked up enough to have a few pieces of his favourite turkey slice and then went to sleep. I would like to think he is now with my gran somewhere (she was his orginal owner before she passed away 5 years ago) He will be sadly missed by us all as he was such a character as long standing forum members will know! I am just so glad we got him back after his disappearance last Autumn so we had a few more months together. I don't feel so alone knowing that you all will be understanding how I feel and providing support...if from afar. My lovely old boy Oscar...goodbye and rest in peace xxx

Dear Claire, I am so sorry, so very sorry. And we were just talking about him a couple of days ago. He had a good life with you, but that doesn't really help at the moment either. Just remember, we are all thinking of you and him and hope you will be ok and that Oscar has found his way into cat heaven. It' right next to ours!

Oh Claire I am so sorry, I know how you feel. He will be at the Rainbow Bridge waiting for you.
There is a bridge connecting heaven and earth It is called Rainbow Bridge because of its many colours
Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills, valleys with lush green grass
When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this special place There is always food and water and warm spring weather
The old and frail are young again Those who are maimed are made whole again
They play all day with each other There is only one thing missing
They are not with their special person who loved them on Earth So each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up !
The nose twitches ! The ears are up ! The eyes are staring ! And this one suddenly runs from the group !
You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her into your arms and embrace your face is kissed again and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated

Claire, hugs from me and give your other cat a big hug as well. He must be very puzzled losing Oscar like that. What a lovely boy Oscar was! It is so sad that our beloved animal friends don't have our life span. But I'm sure, Oscar is up there somewhere, with no more pain and lying in the sun warming him and butterflies and thistledown for him to chase.
Kunuma, what a beautiful text. May I copy it? Another friend of mine has just lost a very much beloved dog after eighteen and this 'poem' would speak to her, I'm sure.

My friend introduced me to the rainbow bridge a while back after we had both lost other beloved pets. I just wish I could know it was true. This is a lovely site with the poem on. But it does make me cry especially as there is a pic of a cat on it just like Oscar www.indigo.org/rainbowbridge_ver2.htmlI am so sad today

Claire, I know you don't believe in God and heaven, but God believes in you. The rainbow bridge exists. I know it, I have truly seen the rainbow many times when saying goodbye to somebody dear. It is not an empty promise. We share your sadness. Any tears you cry for Oscar will be saved and will eventually help you over your grief.
We love you as a friend, I hope you know that.

Aah, Claire, I'm so sorry. Please give your other cat a hug from me, and consider yourself hugged too.
As I heard a little kid say once, the reason animals go before us is because they're better all through their lives, and are already nearer to being angels than we are.

I dont know whether this is a stupid idea, but it helped me. Basicaly i got a box and put all my dogs stuff in it, like pictures, collar, stuff that reminded me of her and well i keep it under my bed. Anyway whenever I felt like, i dunno looking at it i guess i could get the box out and there wasnt a constant reminder about the house. Anyway gradually things have come out, and I have pictures put up and and the collar is round my bed post. I dunno, maybe its a bit of a wierd idea but it helped me and I still have my boxes Hope your feeling a little better x

I lost my Jack 7 months ago. What I did was to get a keepsake box, in fact this one gifts.cafepress.com/item/cloud-angel-maine-coon-keepsake-box/212611185and keep Jack's collars (he had two) in them. Like mysteryarab said, I straight away shoved everything (well nearly everything, there was some toys that both he and Tigger played with) into the cupboard, including the cat carrier that I took home from the vets. It was only until December last year that the carrier came out (I had no choice as I needed both to take Pickle and Tigger to the cattery) and the bed and other stuff only came out when I was moving. Both his bed and blanket are actually on the living room floor at the moment, still unwashed. I donated his food several days later because I had no room for it other than the cupboard where Tigger's food was also stored, ironically enough when I took Pickle home about a month later it all came back with me. If you feel like it, you could get a keepsake box from that site (I couldnt find any other boxes suitable from other sources that were cat themed) - there are hundreds on that site so you could find another one that you like better. I also went and bought a photo frame and had my favourite picture put in it, it was this one www.amazon.co.uk/Personalised-Engraved-Pewter-Photo-Engraving/dp/B001DR3OAC/ref=sr_1_37?ie=UTF8&s=kitchen&qid=1238182267&sr=1-37I was also given a photoframe which I printed out 4 mini photos and stuck it inside too. (That was just a plain silver one.) I also got the idea of starting a scrapbook in memory of him, and also sponsoring the pen he lived in the shelter, but never got around to doing it. In our Cats Protection shelter, nearly all the pens are sponsored and nearly all of them are sponsored in memory of a cat. Anyway, my condolences to you, and I am sorry to hear your news.

Thanks you two. That keepsake box sounds a really nice idea. I was going to print out one of his photos and get it framed. I have the other cat's pics like that. I also have a photo album of them all. TBH tho he didnt have that much stuff, just his collar. The feedbowls are still used by Rosie, he didnt bother with cat toys much (his fav toys were the long pieces of artifical grass out of plant display) and he was wrapped in his blanket when my dad buried him in the garden with all our other dear departed pets.
What i do have and I a wonder if it may be of some use to the cats protection garej, is his pills for his thyroid problem. There is nearly a full months supply. They are called felizamole (will check spelling). Not sure what rules and regs are with regards to pills but I thought they may be useful if a cat at the shelter has the same problem. Or maybe if anyone knows a cat with the same problem. There is about £30 worth of pills there.

Or maybe if anyone knows a cat with the same problem. There is about £30 worth of pills there. Though it is very kind, unfortunately the things is that with the shelter that each medicine has to be batch number recorded. Each time a medicine is used, the batch number has to be recorded, and the number of tablets used. Also if there are any spillages (because this applies to worming and defleaing products, not just medical complaints) that has to be recorded. So unfortunately because of that they wont be any use to the Cats Protection. I know we have had some wormers and deflea stuff given to us by the vet for the volunteers/staff to take because it's out of date (and the vets cant legally sell it) but they cant use it on the cats because of the batch number issue. This is only a recent issue within the past year, before that, anything given to us by the vet was used. The only options are to see if your vet will take it back (most vets will take it back if it is resaleable - unless it happens to be a product that requires it to be stored in the fridge) or alternatively take it to another charity which will more than likely use it (and not bound by the batch number issue). Other than that, it means throwing it into the bin - unless you know someone who has a use for it.

Hi garej, yeah I thought there may be something like that, but just thought I'd ask in case! I am sure I will find a home for them. Seems silly throwing them in the bin when a lot of people are tight for money and could maybe use them.

Oh and whilst we are on the subject this applies to Feliway too, even though you can buy it without prescription (and it's not used directly on the cat).
Food, even specialist stuff for medical complaints (renal, urinary etc) is not subject to the recording of batch numbers, so that is fine to donate. I know that probably does not apply to you Claire, but in case anyone is wondering, I thought I would mention it.
Going back to cafepress (the site where the keepsake box is), the box is made to a very high quality and I have no complaints about it. The only downside is that it took a month to arrive. Also if you dont find a design you like, you can have your own design put onto a keepsake box - such as a favourite photo of Oscar.
