My school wasnt closed, as its a big inner city place, but as I live out in the country it was much 'worse' (better!) and I didnt have to go! Yey I spent the day out in the garden with the dogs it was great. I was gonna start a thread of my own, but ill post my pictures here, when I can get them up x

Thankyou for those lovely pics! We're having a heatwave here- we're entering our 3rd (or 4th?) week of 35+ temps so they were very refreshing.
Our kids went back to school today after 6 weeks of hols YAY! OH still off for another week building the rumpus room out back, but next week I'll have peace & solitude again- can't wait!

Funny you should mention that about your German friend Konstanze... If we get so much as an inch of snow in Ireland the whole country shuts down. On one of our rare and really not very snowy days in college, we had a German lecturer, who was dumb-founded to come in to find about a fifth of her normal class waiting for her... ...but it does look beautiful on the banks of the Shannon...

Yep, it's good. Got to the yard, and found a whole herd of blanket appies waiting for breakfast. They were stood out quite happy eating their haylage bales and letting build up on their backs. But it involved much walking because I live in a tiny village which the gritters ignore. So 16 miles walking, of which about 13 was drivable. Grrrr!
Hope everyone's coping.

Do you ever get snow in your part of Australia trixiepony?

What annoyed me about the schools closing is that I saw a headline stating something along the lines of "Teachers should show more grit" - it is nothing to do with teachers whether the schools are closed or not. Now I was more than happy to have 2 days off - but that doesn't mean that I wouldn't have gone in if the school was open (although the road to the school even today was extremely icy and ungritted). OK - rant over.

I have to consider whether to send my eldest son to school because of the heat and the fact that there's no air con in the classrooms. It's a rotten school- they spend heaps of $ doing work on improving the appearance of the place but zero on the comfort of the kids ie. they're redoing the entrance AGAIN after doing it last year but there's no shade for the kids to play under. At least they removed the bushes in the quad when they realised they were sheltering dozens of lethally venomous brown snakes...

Another snow day for me. Far more snow than we had Mon/Tues this morning and it's still coming down by the lorry load.
Boys all snuggly though, I even had to change their heavyweights for middleweights as they felt too hot and are now happily munching hay in the snow.

we've got more snow today too and the kids are off school. I'm planning a sledging mission this afternoon, I'm such a big kid, I'll be fighting the kids for the sledge - bought it on tuesday because I hurt my bum sliding down a hill in a feed sack. I'll post some photos as soon as I've re programmed the computer - I've had to re load windows and lost everything off it.

Roads were really dangerous and slippery today. And of course it's not so much a problem how carefully you drive - it's all the other people on the road who don't seem to realise that it is safer not to go whizzing along.

The snow didnt disrupt me....well apart from Tuesday. I had to walk to the middle of the village (I live on the outskirts) to catch the other bus route (which runs the opposite side as it is a very large village) to get to town because of health and safety they had to amend one route. I wasted an hour because by the time you realise the bus isnt coming and walk to the bus stop you miss the other bus route! Annoying though.
I am moving in a couple of weeks so that means any future snow will leave me stranded (unlike now I dont have the other option!), but hopefully because the block is mainly elderly people they will be more vigilant about keeping paths clear than they are now!

It was 40 degrees here today. We have air con in our lounge room, where I plan to sleep again tonight as it's only going down to 27, but the laundry, where the back door is was still very hot when we turned the light on to entice Finn in for dinner; the same temp as outside, around 35. 10 minutes later OH went in & the plastic lampshade had MELTED and dripped onto the floor! The light globe was warm but not any hotter than usual, so it must've been the combined heat. There's fires 90kms away so we're keeping an eye on them. I've put H2O containers out around the garden and so it's full of panting birds guarding their bit of water. It's a world away from your fierce winter- extremes suck so bring on Autumn/Spring!

My cousin is in Aus at the mo and she says it is just melting!(like your light shade - that is crazy) I really hope those fires don't get any closer to you and try and keep cool.

Unfortunately it might be 54 people dead due to the fires & many many more from heat related problems- most of the morgues are full in the southern states and other refrigerated spaces are having to be used.
It's the plight of the animals, native & domestic, that really upsets me. We have an escape plan sorted but farmers & horse owners have an impossible task. To think that most of theses fires are lit by arsonists- it's unfathomable to me.

What we need is to pick up the flood in Queensland and dump it on Victoria, that would put out the fire. Or how about you snowed in peaple letting us have sum off your snow we can dump on the fires. I would love to see that how about you, cally, snow in Vic?.

Thanks for the snow pic Zoe. Actually it's made me a bit teary (but in a good way). OH hasn't heard from friends near Marysville which has literally gone- we know their home has gone but don't know about them. I wish summer was over; it's much cooler at the moment but it won't last. I can't remember the last time it rained here. Ironically there's more floods coming up north, and with the south burnt out food's shot up in price, for us and the animals & it's too dry to grow where we are. I put so much effort into my vegie garden in spring but it all died/went to seed- even the weeds are dying! So any snow pony pics very much appreciated xoxoxo

Well now I'm torn. Konstanze, you're safe for now as my computer won't upload my pics at the mo but look out I can't resist photos and I know you'll be seeing the sun soon.
Cally don't tell Konstanze but will keep trying to upload photos of the snow (haha). Seriously though, I hope your friends turn up soon, it is scary knowing people in Aus and watching the devastation on the news.
