Hi folks I need some help. I have just had an email from someone saying they are the illustrator of some of the Jean Slaughter Doty titles and that the covers I have on my site for a couple of the books are not authentic. The books are: Dark Horse and Valley of the Ponies, the pics are on this page of my website: usa.ponymadbooklovers.co.uk/If anyone has copies of these books can they check them for me and if possible scan them (if not a description will suffice) Trouble is I can't remember where I got all the pics I have on my site (I have over a thousand from various sources!) so dont know where these 2 came from. Someone will have sent me them so they must exist somewhere! BTW if you remember sending me the pics in question please let me know!

Hi Claire!
The covers are certainly authentic, they're just the paperback editions, which had revised cover art. I had copies years ago, but gave them away when I replaced with hardcovers, so I no longer have them to check! The artist you have listed IS correct for the hardcover editions....I can't remember if the paperbacks retained their original illustrations or not....I think Valley of the Ponies may have (it was sort of a trade size square book), but Dark Horse didn't (it was more mass-market rectangular). Again though, it's been a while and my memory may be playing tricks on me.
Cover art for the Monday Horses is the revised paperback cover as well, btw....one of the few instances I can think of where the pb cover is better looking than the original dj (which wasn't hideous, just really bland and boring)

Thanks very much for that. I thought you would know if anyone did! BTW if anyone has different editions from the ones on my site I would love pics...pretty please

Konstanze, that wouyld be fantastic if you could. The email was apparantly from the author herself. Have replied to it. Not sure if I have had an answer yet.

Hi Claire,
I was going to say I could email pics over the weekend, but I think Konstanze will be faster than that!
Re Doty email....erm, if it really is from her, alert the media. She's been dead for years.

Oh good, I was getting worried that things might be getting a little weird ;D Excellent news re cover shots...that's really nice of her to offer...I loved the cover of Dark Horse particularly, the paperback cover art isn't nearly as nice. So that's two of Doty's illustrators still with us....Ted Lewin is still working: www.tedlewin.com/I know Sam Savitt died a few years back (I loved his work).

Oh I love Sam Savitt too. I think pony books have been lucky in having some brilliant illustrators, perhaps more so than any other genre. Thanks again konstanze
