I think I might as well open an animal sanctuary. Yesterday OH's boss asked if we wanted a dog as his sister was emigrating and couldn't afford to take all her animals with her, we said we hadn't really got the room or time for another one........... She was delivered today, a very gorgeous german shepherd who is very friendly but I'm sure we said no., must have muggins written on my forehead!

Still laughing over offending word - to enlighten everyone else, I originally used a different word than "muggins" but my computer decided it was inappropriate and blocked me from the thread so I had to enlist our friendly admin to change it for me - thanks claire.

Yes kunuma is! The cat loves German Shepherds too! But is terrified of children, probably for a good reason!

She IS gorgeous, isn't she. We once went through the same thing, got given a really lovely long-haired German shepherd, although I had put my foot down firmly and said No before we even saw him, but his former owner, a soldier posted to Germany was keeping him in a cellar, because he'd split up with his wife and was living in the sergeant's mess (very convoluted story!)
Anyway Bruno was all over us the moment he saw us and my daughters who were only 5 and 3 looked at me so pleadingly - how could I refuse. When we moved back to England, he cost us a fortune (this was in the days of complete animal quarantine), and Bruno cost more than our household did.
But we never regretted it. He is long gone now, but he used to look after the girls (he had not been trained to be aggressive and German Shepherds are caring sheep dogs by nature). He did frighten the living daylights out of people though, simply because he was so big (the long fur made him look even bulkier) and people have this idea that they are an aggressive breed.
If you can, Zoe, and you have the space, keep her, muggins or not (I will spend hours guessing what term you originally used). She needs a good home and you're the best. She needs rest from breeding and lots of love - and you can provide both.

The original word started with s. I am definately keeping her and to reassure everyone she will not be having any more puppies but will have the chance to enjoy herself and just be a dog and not a constant mum.

Did anyone read about that Dalmation who just had 18 puppies? And the litter prior to that she had 15, so I think she deserves a break too; evidently she is related to the dog that starred as the female lead in one of the Disney '126 Dalamations' films or whateverknock-off it is they're up to!

I wonder sometimes, if these people who breed dogs by the dozen and a half per litter aren't helping their poor breeding machines have these enormous litters with the help of hormones. It works for women, why not dogs? Don't get me wrong, I think they should be locked up and the key thrown away. But either they are in-breeding to ensure that the poor animals have large litters (and the Dalmatian is already so inbred, its a wonder they still throw healthy litters), or they are giving nature a 'helping' hand, in the same way the so-called puppy farmers have their bitches coming into heat four times a year.
I was always under the impression that the Kennel Club only registered the first six puppies of any litter. I certainly know that 20 or so years ago, I knew a woman who bred cocker spaniels (very responsibly, only one litter per year at the most), and she was always extremely concerned when her bitch had seven or eight pups. In fact, thinking about it, the German equivalent of the Kennel Club wouldn't register any puppies of a litter, if it was more than six pups. Anybody with doggie knowledge who can enlighten me?

No idea, but my pup is registered and im sure he was one of 7 or 8... but im not sure, could be 6. There were only 3 males left when we got there!

We took Tasha to the seaside today, she loved it apart from getting scared to death by a lab. We were walking to the sea when the lab (not on a lead) bounded up to her, he only wanted to play but he scared her, she slipped her collar and bolted back to the car which was quite a long way (I was puffing running after her). She wouldn't come when I called her as the lab was inbetween us chasing her, I was fuming with its owners who didn't even call it they just said he wanted to play. Duh!! Anyway after that we had a lovely run on the beach (on lead) and a splash in the sea!
edited to say it is lucky the beach we go to has car parking on the beach so she didn't go on road!
