OMG Have just bought a copy of The Wild One by Monica Edwards on ebay for £100! IIf anyone has read my blog I have been harping on about this book for a while, wishing I could read it again and funnily enough 2 copies appeared on ebay soon after. This is my all time favourite Monica Edwards book but just happens to be the rarest too! Got outbid on the first which had the dustjacket, the one I bought unfortunately didnt which was prob why I got it for "only" £100. Bit more than I paid for my first copy of this book which was about 20p or so. (I sold it for a bit more!!!) This time I think I will photocopy the book before I sell it again. (Er you didnt hear me say that we should not be encouraging illegal practices on these forums!) Just got me wondering whats the most other people have paid for books. Someone was mentioning being willing to pay £70 for a copy of Mystery on the Moor. I have paid around the hundred mark for one or two others, Silver Snaffles 1st ed with dustjacket, Island of Adventure 1st with dj, a couple of rare Famous Fives (all sold on at a profit thank Gawd) as well as this one. Dont think I have ever paid more tho.

OOOOOOOOh - I SO want to read that one, it is one of the only two I haven't read, it is the last one in the series isn't it? If such a hypothetical copy ever existed, I would make a donation to the ILPH or Brooke Hospital for Horses, or as Monica loved cats, the Cats Protection League to be able to read it, I am sure she would have approved of that!

If I was to do such a criminal thing as photocopying the book it would just be for my private use I would not think of selling it however I am sure if any friends wanted to see a copy that could be arranged! I'm pretty sure there will be no copies of the book in any libraries exmoorfan. (sorry I outbid you by the way!) There wasnt a single book by Monica Edwards in all the libraries in the entire borough where I live when I last checked. This is the rarest one of all the Monica Edwards too. I have seen only about 5 or 6 for sale in the last few years. Girls Gone By Publishers are re-publishing some of the rarer Monica Edwards books so hopefully they will do this one.
When I have received the book and re-read it will do a review for the website wont give away the plot tho! From what I can remember of it its not really one of her pony stories but it is a lovely book.
Oh yes forgot to mention, yes it is the last in the series.

Seriously, is it really illegal to photocopy a book? Or is it the same as recording TV progs (which of course no one ever does!!). I always thought it was OK unless you sold it - I have to admit when I did my Uni Course I couldn't afford the text books and photo copied reams of stuff - come to that - that is where all the notes the lecturer handed out came from too!! I have asked every library I have been a member of for Monica Edwards books, I just get told there is no demand for them - how could there be unless new readers had a chance to get to know them, I am so glad they are reprinting them. I also tried to get the 'Little Women' series from the library, with no luck, that really shocked me!!

From what I can remember from the days when I used to have a "proper job" at a college and do photocopying, you are allowed to copy a certain percentage of the book but not all. In terms of naughtiness it probably comes somewhere between taping stuff off the telly and copying DVDs. Neither of which I have ever dreamed of doing of course! Its a shame that libraries don't stock the decent children's authors anymore. As you say, if the kids had a chance to read authors like Monica Edwards or the P-Ts I am sure they would love them and there would be a demand for them.

Hi Claire, No worries about outbidding..I will read it someday along with Under the Rose & A wind is Blowing...I was busy with boys when they came out..!! lol!! Girls Gone By plan to reprint all which could be why so many of the rarer ones have come on.!!! I paid a fortune last year for the Nightbird and Storm Ahead & now they are affordable... I agree that children/ teenagers need to read good quality books but no doubt they will read Riders first..!! Not knocking riders because when I read them was pleasantly suprised..

Mine is £50 for a hardback edition of Caroline Akrill's I'd Rather Not Gallop. However, it is signed by Caroline. Its a shame that libraries don't stock the decent children's authors anymore. As you say, if the kids had a chance to read authors like Monica Edwards or the P-Ts I am sure they would love them and there would be a demand for them. Actually, some do. I had a look at my library's online book search (you can search the entire catalogue, and reserve online) and found 32 P-T books in the entire county. One of those is an audio tape set of the P-T's autobiography: Fair Girls and Grey Horses.

Hi garej, If you find any rarer monica's in library's please let me know.... Claire sorry for the slow reply. Have had connection problems.. I think I got the info about reprinting direct from GGB .. I had a look and my county does not have any Monica Edwards. Yes it is illegal to copy a book: my local library has a notice saying what it legal and illegal to copy. I dont take much interest in it because usually I am going there to photocopy a letter, but I do remember it saying something about a book. However, I doubt that anyone will arrest you for photocopying one or two pages (or even copying them out), but an entire book is a different matter. However, it is a different thing if it is 70 years or more after the author died, the copyright becomes a different matter altogether, and then it is legal. As we were talking about Josephine, that no longer applies, as Josephine is very much alive. Myself, I would pay £60 for a copy of "Caroline Canters Home" by Caroline Akrill, with dustjacket.

One of those is an audio tape set of the P-T's autobiography: Fair Girls and Grey Horses. Better than my library! Its the same has a database of all the county's books that you can search. In it I found only 1 P-T book (Black Beauty's Family) no Monica Edwards, a couple of Joanna Cannan crime fiction in the reserve section, and really nothing else by any of the older pony authors. The only one there was a few books for was K M Peyton, but even then not many.

I bid on the edition of Crab The Roan, but I didnt win it.
I think that had it been labelled as Peyton in the actual title, it would have gone much higher - my estimate is around £70.

If anyone is interesting in finding out more about 'The Wild One' I am adding a review of it to the reviews thread (it does not give away the ending) and have also done a special page about it on the website at: www.ponymadbooklovers.co.uk/page39.html
