Could anyone give me any info on the the following lesser know JB books. Some of them I had and sold without getting the info from them (silly me!) and others I have never read.
Red Rocket Mystery Horse - read this but sold it a while back and forgot what happens in it. Anyone got the blurb or can give a quick resume?
The Ponies Next Door - as above. Also does anyone know the publishing details of the first edition?
Trot Home Sally - know nothing about this except it exits. Any info at all would help!
Pony Forest Adventure - Blurb or synopsis please!
Sue's TV pony - Blurb/synopsis I assume this is the continuation of the story of Sue and her circus Arab?
Nobody's Pony - sold this a while back and regret it as havent seen it since. Any info gratefully received.
Ta!

Blurb for Pony Forest adenture! ""Seek the sign of the ragged staff," said Gypsy lee mysteriously. Those cryptic words held the clue to the discovery by the five friends of the rustlers who were robbing the forest of its wild ponies. Pat, Vicky, David, Sally and her brother Nigel help to rescue the forest ponies and have an exciting time in this adventure set in beautiful and unspoilt forest country. " The forest is as far as I can tell the New Forest of course! I have Red Rocket and will have a quick read when I get half a Mo and let you have a synopsis of the plot. Hope this helps!

Thanks for that you two. Someone had told me Trot Home Sally was a pony story so thanks for putting me right. I have now expunged it from the site! I look forward to hearing about red rocket when either of you have the chance. (But no hurry!) Kicking myself for not making a note of the story when I had the book! Just bought a copy of Timber by Judith B and am waiting eagerly for it to arrive...

Nobody's Pony (1962 university of london press) Larger print format aimed at slightly younger audience possibly with colour illustrations on most pages throughout.
Silverstar came to the riding school with a bad reputation - we are told he had been neglected, starved and tormented- but the new owners are unaware of his history other than he has a bad repuation, but they think they can win him round. However he proves more of a handful than they expected! Silverstar is not the only newcomer and a new rider called Fiona also arrives at the stables and builds up an affinity with Silverstar after a few 'adventures' together. With Rosemary's help she sets about to reschool him - just in time for the hunter trials..... (won't completly spoil it!)
Pony Forest Adventure
Part Lester and her cousin were thrilled when they came to live by the pony forest (New Forest). A Forest full of ponies was all they ahd dreamed off but the ponies were being taken. They set out to stop the thieves (who were trading in horseflesh) and it turns into a thrilling and action packed summer.
Interestingly the first edition has a pic of JMB inside the DW with the real 'Timber'. I have read many of her books were based on real animals she knew.

Hi THought I had Red Rocket Mystery Horse but can't find it anywhere. Have got Five Foals and Philippa which I think is quite unusual. This is the blurb:
"When Philippa and her friend Joy arrive at Old Farm to stay with her Aunt Pat and cousin Mike they are greeted bu the birth of the first foal, a handsome palomino whom they name Golden Boy. But their arrival is also accompanied by disaster and the two girls realise that they will have to help Mike run the pony farm alone. Then they try to solve Aunt Pat's problems so that she does not have to close down Old Farm in face of the competition provided by Miss Zena Gregson who lives nearby and has now turned her riding school into a stud for Welsh Ponies. Between the birth of Golden Boy and the birth of the fifth foal at the end of the story there is a string of eventful days during which Mike and the two girls find Moonlight, visit a forge, enter the local show and meet a family of Americans - quite apart from the excitement and, sometimes, anxiety which is caused by the birth of the other three foals".

Re: Ponies Next Door- a good book, starts with the kids lazing around in their and the next door's garden wondering what to do all summer when a young woman and her friend (brother?) buy the place and with the kids help start a riding school. Has a memorable episode when the weather turns disasterous and they shelter the ponies in the hall of one of the houses. Quite a fun book. Does anyone know of a book where some children capture and break a group of (New) Forest ponies and then sell them on? I believe it was by Judith Berrisford.....

Just a note...at least three of Berrisford's books had US printings from Dodd, Mead and Co. Publishers; Ponies Next Door, Sue's Circus Horse and Red Rocket. The first two had same cover art and internal illustrations as the UK versions....I've not been able to locate a copy of Red Rocket, but given that it's the same publisher, it's a good bet that it's the same as the UK edition as well.

My 'Ponies Next Door' might be a 1st edition: it has 'Copyright 1954 by Judith Berrisford' and underneath has '1st published in 1954 by the University of London Press Ltd, Warwick Square, Lon, E.C.4.'. It has fabulous illustrations by Geoffry Whitlam. It only cost me about $2 on ebay along with 'Ponies All Summer' which is similarly published in 1956. Pretty pleased if they are 1st editions as they cost $6 including postage!

Cally you did really well with those 2 books. Yes, your right they are both first editions. I have been looking for another copy of Ponies Across the River as I want to read it again. I do like Geoffrey Whittams illustrations too, he is one of my favs.
kunuma, have you also read the Taff books too? I like both these series, they are good old fashioned gentle childrens stories. Didnt she also write a cat one...or am I getting confused?

I havent read the Taff books, but she did indeed write a cat book. It was called "The Cats of Winkle Bay" and was published in 1959. It is quite a hard to find book, I am after it, but so far no luck.

She wrote one called the far away cats or far from home cats too (not sure which) I forgot about that! It was "The Far-from-home cats", and like the Cats Of Winkle Bay is hard to find. It was one of Judith's later books, and was published in 1967.

Apologies if I have asked this before on a differnt thread but does anyone know if Son of Darky by JMB is a pony book or not. It has a pony on the cover and is I think published in the same format as Rustlers in the New Forest.
