It has been suggested we start a new thread for this. For anyone who hasnt been following the Christmas thread we have been thinking of sponsoring or adopting a pony. The consensus of opinion has been leaning towards an Australian brumby. Cally posted this on the other thread: Here are 2 sites with info re. sponsoring a brumby www.savethebrumbies.org/sponsorship/www.victorianbrumbyassociation.org/BrumbiesinNeed.html. I think sponsorship is around $100 a year, so around 50 pounds I guess. There are a couple of other groups but I selfishly put these 2 up because they are relatively close to me- by 'close' I mean 1-2 days drive away rather than 5-6! The 1st one is in the region my mum-in-law lives in close to Queensland and the Victorian one is closer and near the High Country- Snowy Mtns. (I cant get the 2nd link to work tho) If anyone has any suggestions/ideas about this please post here.

Try missing the last bit of the 2nd address and go for www.victorianbrumbyassociation.org and look under sponsorship. If there is a problem with the website, maybe we should go for the other group, or pick a UK organisation.

Yes, I got both sites up - they both look genuine and I tried very hard not to fall for the injured palomino youngster up for sponsorship on the first one, because perhaps we should choose the rescue group that it would be possible for you (Cally) to visit, so that you at least could actually see 'our' horse on behalf of all of us.
I was suprised to see the first one had brumbies for stud - are they doing that to make the breed popular, so more people rescue them, or is it a money making venture??

Yes kunuma I was smitten by that one too (Princess) but as you say if Cally can visit any of them it would be great as she could take some pics and give us a report. What do you think cally?
If any of you want to join in with the sponsorship let me know here or by PM'ing me if you prefer - we will need to know numbers so we can work out the cost per person.

They all looked gorgeous you can count me in for sponsorship. I looked on another site and found brumbies for adoption for $300 ~ for that price you can take them home and if you prove you've looked after them properly for a year, you can keep them!! mmmmm I wonder if they would post me one!!?!

I am probably going to be the only killjoy but I regulary support a little known welsh Charity www.lluesthorseandponytrust.org.uk/shopping_list.html who do brilliant work (not that the others don't), We also support dogs trust, Donkey sanctuary, have a sponsored pig and also the RSPCA at xmas time (mainly because it's where Jadey came from rather than thinking they do good work to be honest so take loads of food/treats for the dogs to the one she came from) so don't really want to get involved in another charity at the moment. sorry (ps if anyone fancies a nosy at the lluest link....)

Visiting at short notice won't be possible guys- one is 1 days drive, and the other 2 days drive away! As I said on the other thread, the Victorian one is probably closer so I could do that with an overnight stay which would be ok. I'm happy to ring them with any questions though, and could plan a visit for next year, maybe January if we can find a house sitter who isn't scared of the dog!

No worries haffy I realise a lot of people already support many charities. So dont anyone feel obliged to take part. But it would be nice to have something for the PMBLs (or should I call us pumbles zoe? ;D) to share in.

My little Pumble def has strange effect on people, he even makes other half go all gooey (he doesn't admit to it of course) some friends came over today and were considering smuggling him out in their pocket. - Pumble not other half! ;D ;D ;D Haffy your charity in wales had me in tears I'm tempted to go and visit (only 2 hour drive or less) well done you for finding such a good one.

I checked out Redwings today and they have online adoption so updates and pics etc are sent to sponsors which might work out better as there's a few of us, as opposed to snail mail stuff. Also they are a bit cheaper, so we could even go 2 or 3 ponies at the 3 different farms (1 at each) so you guys might have an opprtunity to visit them. Just another suggestion- maybe we could have an online poll with a few different option?

Some good ideas cally. Not sure if we have enough people to sponsor a brumbie at the moment with it being quite a lot of money, and I know lots of people support other charities as well, so may be a better idea for the time being to do a cheaper option like Redwings. I would rather everyone paid a small amount and felt involved. Perhaps in the future when we get more members the brumby adoption could be more feasible. But I will leave it up to you guys to discuss. I will set up a poll when I have worked out what questions to ask! Another idea I had was to have some sort of competition with a small entry fee. Money would be used to buy a modest prize and rest left over for a charity of choice. I thought we could perhaps do something every month like this, not just at christmas. EDIT - have just looked at the Redwings site. Adoption is only £12.50 so it would only be £1 each for 12 of us or £2 for 6 so even the skintest person (probably me!) could get involved. As cally says there is an oline option where you can visit your horses personal website so that everyone could checkout the horse/pony we adpoted. There is also more of a chance some of us could visit the horses than in Oz (sorry Cally). I think this is the way to go but if anyone disagrees let me know and I'll set up a poll. As I said earlier perhaps the brumby option is something for the future. To check out Redwings here is the link: www.redwings.org.uk/adoptions.htmI have bought redwings adoptions before for people and they seem pretty good. Some nice gifts too, if expensive.

Hi all, Have emailed Redwings and it seems to be OK if we adopt as a group rather than a single person as is the norm. I have been given a phone number to ring to sort it out as its slightly more complicated this way.
Just need to know some numbers of people who would like to contribute to the adoption so I can work out costs. As we have mentioned earlier it is quite low cost £12.50 so even if not many of us are taking part shouldnt be more than a couple of pounds each if we start with one pony. We could maybe adopt another next year when we are all solvent again after Christmas!
I have set up a poll as I thought it may be the easiest way to collect names. Just tick the first option if you want to join in. I am the only one who can see your names. Please can anyone who wants to contribute to the adoption do it in the next few days so I can get the ball rolling and we can choose a horse/pony. We will then set up a special thread for the adopted pony.

I'm not sure how to send my contribution- should I send a book to someone who's also putting in without asking for a swap in return and they contribute for me? Or should I paypal you, Claire?
Suggestions most welcome (ie; needed), and once that's sorted out we can pick a horse!!!!

The best thing would be for me to arrange the adoption and everyone else send me their share. You can post it or paypal it to me. I have got a non-business paypal account as well as a business one now. But will give it another couple of days to get everyones name in.

Thank you for your kind words cally. At least I am appreciated here if no-where else ;D
OK we have 7 people joining in with the adoption so if everyone contributes £2 that should cover it plus a little extra. I will be PM ing everyone on the list with instructions for payment. Paypal, cheque or cash are all fine. Will add to this post later tonight with details of ponies for us to choose from!
EDIT btw forgot to say you cant pay into a personal paypal account with credit card, if you need to please PM me.

don't know how you get everything done! By not doing the housework! ;D Here is the link with the horses and ponies we can adopt. If anyone has any preferances over which centre - for example if you live near one and may like to visit - please let me know. I think beswickcollector lives near one of them from a previous post. They are all a long way off me....but then everything is! www.redwings.org.uk/acatalog/Adoption_Scheme.html

Is it too late to join in? Sorry for my indecisiveness, but im pretty broke atm and I usualy give my money to the local RSPCA thing, but I figured I could just donate some extra dog food and stuff and 2 quid is hardly gonna break the budget. And I wasnt sure how to pay as I dont have paypal or anything, but If I can send it its cool Sorry if im too late :S!
