It's driving me bonkers! I recall a book from ages past but can't remember the title so I guess you guys could help. Plot is- a group of kids, possibly in the New Forest, near Exmoor, something similar, corral half a dozen or so ponies and break them in. I think one was a skewbald called Jigsaw, but that's about all I can remember specifically.
The cover was one of those ones that have dark brown top and bottom with the title at the top and quite a decent illustration underneath. Paperback, of course c.1970's edition.
Please put me out of my misery! Not that it will help me get a copy down here in Hot-as-bloody-Hades-land and getting worse. Snakes are out and about in September now- terrific!

Ponies in peril by DPT had a pony called Jigsaw in it and was about a brother and sister breaking a group of wild ponies in to sell and save from meat. But you prob know that one already and i dont think it ever had a cover like the one you describe.

It sounds more like Ponies in Peril, but of course, like Claire said it probably isnt that one.
The other PT books to have a Jigsaw in are Pony Club Challenge, Pony Club Trek, the entire Black Pony Inn series and Sundance Saves the Day.
The only other one I can think of that fits the bill PT wise is Six Ponies, but that doesnt involve corralling and as far as I can remember, none were skewbald.
But the cover style doesnt fit, unless you are thinking of the Swift Books edition, however that was a hb.

Didn't Jill and Ann break in a bunch of wild ponies in Pony Jobs for Jill? Not that it sounds like that one. Romany in Six Ponies was skewbald wasn't he?

Yes she did in Challenges For Jill/Pony Jobs for Jill. Yes there was a skewbald pony in Six Ponies (just remembered), but I cant remember the name, so you could be right. But there definitely was no Jigsaw in Six Ponies.

The only 'brown' books I can think of are the JMB Granada pb ones Trouble At Ponyways, Ponies All Summer, Pony Forest Adventure and theres one other I can't of at present. I have not read Pony forest adventure yet but it would fufill the New Forest bit?
My initial thought was also Ponies In Peril.

Thanks guys- you're right about the series, haffyfan, and I haven't read Ponies in Peril (or Ponyways or Forest Adventure) but that's probably it.
Now I've got to hunt them down which is easier said than done in this relatively small (half a million people) and isolated Capital (c.3 hours to Sydney by road). Thank goodness for the internet!!!
