My brain's on slow tonight, I can only think of a couple: run wild run free -I loved this when I was younger but tissues needed! the horse whisperer -prefered the book but it's still good[need tissues again] spirit stallion of the cimarron -I didn't know if animations counted but I like it There's also "racing stripes" which is almost a pony film but I thought it was a bit pants!

I can only think of a couple to add to that list and can't think of titles to either
James Aldriges Sporting proposition was made into a Disney Film and the other I think is called Dark horse (?) It's about a canadian dressage horse called Torka. Oh and the one with mark lester where the grey pony gets stuck in a bog (never watched it all yet) and again can't remember thetitle.

Good idea charliedeanna. I was thinking about adding a page on horsy films to the website but never got round to it yet. Here's a few more: Shergar Champions Brighty of the Grand Canyon (about a mule or donkey?) Archer's Adventure Into the West Escape From the Dark Ride a Wild Pony Misty of Chincoteague Justin Morgan had a Horse I think the mark lester film was Wild White Pony - or maybe that was the book title. We had a discussion about it a while back so its onthe forum somewhere! Here are a couple of links you may be interested in guys. The first is an amazon list it has has some lesser known horse films in it which I havent heard of: www.amazon.com/The-Best-Horse-Movies/lm/17BT6SYNEL702This one is the highest grossing horse films of all time: www.boxofficemojo.com/genres/chart/?id=horse.htmBTW I LIKE racing stripes!!! ;D

The Mark Lester film is run wild run free. When I saw it as kid it was my dream to tame a wild pony like he did. Still quite like the idea now come to think of it. I didn't realise there were so many horse films, thats something else for me to start buying-bank loan please!!

Thanks for putting me right on the Mark Lester film must be the book I was thinking of.
I know what you mean, if you start buying all the horse films as well as books it will soon add up!
What about The Water Horse I haven't seen it just come out lately is it about a horse or some other beastie?

Green Grass of Wyoming
The Horsemasters (yes, an adaptation of the book. Not out on DVD, doggone it!)
The Great Dan Patch
Horse with the Flying Tail (Disney short, won Oscar, about the showjumper Nautical)
Blue Fire Lady
Horse in the Grey Flannel Suit - stupid name, the book by Eric Hatch it's based on was called The Year of the Horse. For a Disney film, it's actually excellent. Best bit they did was to use a real international jumping event (Washington International Horse Show President's Cup) for the jumping footage...no having to watch a horse walk over a 2 ft fence and have to pretend its a Grand Prix course! Book and movie both predate, and predict, the advent of horses owned by non-horse corporations which use the horses in their advertising.

Mark Lester also starred in a version of Black Beauty, which is not really based on the book (unlike other versions).
There is also a Disney film called "Miracle of the White Stallions" (known in the UK as "The Flight of the White Stallions") which is about horses, specifically the Lippizaner horses and their journey to safety during WW2.

Lost Stallions: The Journey Home is another one I found by mistake yesterday, it is a recent film too (2008). It has Mickey Rooney in it, who was in National Velvet.
Seems he was in a few horsey movies: others he was in are Thoroughbreds Don't Cry (it is a racing one), Stablemates (again racing), Lightning, the White Stallion, Bluegrass.
Mickey Rooney also starred in the tv series of The Adventures of the Black Stallion.
Oh and there was Moonacre (the White horse) film that is quite recent, nobody has mentioned that.
I agree that tv in the 1980s was dire on a Sunday. There was either a choice of a religious programme in the morning (no soap omnibus like there are these days) on ITV or the BBC (and if you were lucky at the same time!) or nothing. Unlike today, there was no shops open on a Sunday (well you may have found the odd corner shop open, but certainly not the major shops) and pubs used to shut during the day. Unless you were the type to go to (willingly) church every Sunday, there was nothing to do. There was a hour of kiddies programming if you were lucky, and that was ITV. If it was a religious Sunday (Rememberance Sunday for example) then it was either cancelled or severely cut back.
For me it was even worse, half of the programming (and this even happens today) was cancelled for some god damn awful Welsh programme (in Welsh, not English) as I didn't have Channel 4 until 2000. Unfortunately S4C did used to show The Waltons and Little House on a Prairie, so that is something else I watched.

Anyway the other day I happened to catch a glimpse of another horsey film: The Red Pony (based on the book by John Steinbeck). That book has been made into two films: one in 1949 and another in 1973.
It was the 1949 version that was on tv: on Film 4. As Film 4 like to repeat their films to death fortunately there is an chance to see it again. It's on 6th October at 11.00.
Oh another two I found:
Moondance Alexander Virginia's Run

Watched 'Wild Hearts can't be Broken' courtesy of Youtube at weekend. It's been uploaded in 10 minute chunks. The grey horse in it must have the longest, straightest back I have ever seen!

The Return Of October Casey's Shadow Misty Justin Morgan Had A horse San Domingo Bluegrass Special(Disney, racehorse. good) There was one on TV back in the 80's..... Cherly Ladd was in it, and I think it was based on a book I read that I would love to find again... movie is Bluegrass, and I didn't get to see all of it cause my tv didn't get the channel it was on. The book I can't remember except it had bluegrass in the title and the Author's last name started with K cause I found it near Stephen King. Back to movies: Disney did a bunch for the Wonderful World Of Disney. Some where good, and I would love to find on DVD.
