This is a good read - though I had to google the area it is based in as I couldn't believe such a bucolic paradise actually existed in America. :oA place where everyone knows everyone else and you can ride miles on trails with your dogs in peace and quiet, and take ponies and dogs on camping holidays! I was a fan of the author from the moment I read her book dedication to the dog who accompanied her on her rides! It is all about Morgans, a breed about which I know absolutely nothing, I have not even seen one! But I should very much like to!

Never heard of it! Who is it by kunuma and is it non-fiction? I would like to look out for it.

:-) Not everyone in the US is as built up as New York City, any more than England is defined by London! Re Morgans....they're considered the first real American Breed, developed in Vermont. Known for their versatility, they're used for riding and driving....here's a link to the breed page, which has nice info on the history and breed description: www.morganhorse.com/resources/info.php

I have a copy of the book Justin Morgan had a Horse by Marguerite Henry which is apparantly about the origins of the morgan horse. Will get round to reading it eventually!

I haven't read Henry's Justin Morgan since I was a kid...I remember liking it, but not being absolutely wild for it as I was for her King of the Wind...am going to have to re-read one of these days...perhaps I'll love it coming to it as an adult. Also have another, far lesser known, children's bio of the horse called A Horse Named Justin Morgan by Harold W. Felton lurking in the tbr pile...grin..too many books, too little time!
Speaking of which, I'm down to last couple of chapters of a book you recommended....Pony From Tarella....it really is a lovely book...pity she did only the one with ponies!

Thank you for that link susanb, fascinating! I never knew all that about sidesaddles and 'parking out'. I had only seen pictures of the show type with those shoes, and the nicked tails, lovely to see them being normal and versatile too, I like little horses! I think I want one! I am still intrigued by the area she lives in, not so much because it is country, though I am guilty of thinking that America was either cities, or acres of wilderness or ranch land, sort of either one extreme or the other. (Cowboy film versus Sex and the City) ;D What intrigues me about her area is it's likeness to the old fashioned village life we used to have in this country. That is a description that is not very helpful unless you haved lived in that sort of area here I know!. Plus that there are places where you are allowed to camp with dogs and horses! She is called Nancy Bailey, and the place is in somewhere called Michigan. There seem to be a lot of lakes there!
