Does anyone read poetry at all? I do, occasionally, it's much quicker than reading a novel for sure. I've got the original 1935 Dragon Book of Verse (my mother's copy), prefer it to the later New Dragon Book of Verse. I rarely listen to Poetry Please on Radio 4, I'm very picky and the chances of anything I like on there, seem pretty low. I was reading a few Thomas Hardy poems on Gutenberg the other day, liked them. I've got a book of metaphysical poetry, it was my choice for a school prize, quite weird stuff. My late father liked Philip Larkin, not sure I do really. John Betjeman, don't think I'd like much.
There must be some, probably many, good poems about horses or even ponies out there, I'd have absolutely no idea what they are. Though I looked up a book of English romantic verse on EBay, it has a picture of a grey horse on the cover, so maybe there's some romantic equine poetry.

Hi Charlotte, you really are giving me things to think about - plus grist for the mill for my website. I definitely should do a section on poetry. I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with poetry, One part of my double arts degree is in English lit, so I have read a lot! Some of it I do like, mainly the down to earth stuff. I actually love Philip Larkin! (Maybe partly because I first studied his poems at school and there were rude words in it ) But when I matured I realised that it expressed the truths of life in a basic way which anyone could understand. I guess I have a bit of a streak of anti-intellectualism in me, in that I don't subscribe to the school of thought which made poetry accessible only to the highly educated, so the metaphors, etc, were like in-jokes to others with a classical education. That said, sometimes I just like the lyrical quality of the words themselves, without trying to work out the meaning - Coleridge for example. The best place I know to find horse-themed poetry is in the various anthology books available. Quite a few have horsy poems. Here is a link to the UK section in which I have mentioned those which contains poems: britishshortstories.ponymadbooklovers.co.uk/I am sure there are also books of horsy poetry, but I have never sought them out.
