Just wondering whether people consider donkey books as 'pony books' I do, but maybe some would just class them as just general animal books. I have got a few of them on my website as pony books, not sure whehter to have a separate section for them or not.
My favourite donkey stories are The Boy and the Donkey aka The Donkey Race by DPT (I defy anyone to say this is not a pony book!) and also Special Delivery by Gillian Baxter as I like the donkey character in it. Another Gillian Baxter book which features a donkey is Gillian Baxter's Sweet Rock (I wonder if she had a soft spot for them?) although this also has a pony in it.
The reason this sprang to mind was that I passed a donkey sanctuary when I was in Scotland a few days ago. They are very cute, esp the foals!
Ive added a poll so it would be interesting to find out others views. Also has anyone else any fav donkey stories or donkey characters?

There are pb authors who wrote about donkeys, but there are also a lot of books about donkeys which make the donkey much more of just a pet rather than something to ride. I'm trying to think of the Cornish series about donkeys and cats (help me out someone!)- def not pony books.

Derek Tangye (sp?) wrote books featuring (among other things) donkeys and cats - think they were set in Lamorna (sort of near Penzance). Think they were autobiographical - not children's books.

Thanks sarah have been trying to think of his name to reply to kunuma, yes they were non-fic.
I suppose I am talking about childrens story books which feature a donkey as the main animal character. CPT also wrote one called Bandits in the Hills about a boy and a donkey set in Sicily. I know that donkeys are considered more as pets than something to ride - but would that make a pony book where the pony/horse wasnt ridden less of a pony book?

But ---- if we go on whether the animal is rideable or not - I used to ride a cow!! ;D Like Lisa in More Ponies for Jean! ;D Plus there was someone who used to drive a team of zebras!

So is a zebra book a pony book?! ;D
I would call the film Racing Stripes with a zebra in it a pony film! (good film if you havent seen it)
Obviously riding can't be a criteria. Can just imagine the books:
Jill Enjoys her Cows
A Cow for Jean
Wish for a Cow
Cow Jobs for Jill
etc, etc....
Maybe its how close the animal is to the horse genetically, ie, donkeys, mules and zebra stories could all come under the umbrella of pony book. (Hey Ive been on howrse too long talking about genetics! ;D)

To keep your list up to date Claire, as well as
'Anudder Cow for Jean ' there is
'This Bull is Dangerous'
Then there was the Australian series including the likes of
'Silver Jersey's daughter'!
But the most famous series was a little know collaboration of authors - it was a about a dairy herd living in West Wales who tired of the weather and emigrated.
'Cows in the Valley' 'Cows in the Blizzard' 'Goodbye to Cows' 'The Empty Field' 'Thunderhooves' 'Green Grass of Wyoming'
the final book, written by the herd in America, was called 'Cows from Afar'

A Cow in a Million
Cow of Fire
Mooing Wild
And of course there were the adventures of Jackie and Babs and their two bovine beauties:
Jackie won a cow
10 Cows and Jackie
Jackie on Cow Island
Jackie's Cow Camp Summer
Jackie and the Misfit Cow
Change Cows Jackie!
Ooh better stop now this is addictive! ;D

DPT wrote The Boy & The Donkey, not JPT.
