The other day I was priveliged to be introduced to a very grand, very glamorous and very ladylike hunting lady
She definitely had the "Red Army face" on, but I was described as "he reviews pony books" at which she was suddenly all smiles and charmingly girlish. We speedily agreed that Black Beauty was the greatest pony book (and possibly book), she then enthusiastically asserted that "Bonny the Pony" by Ruth Clarke was the second greatest. She has read all of the Jill books and most of the PT sisters so is pretty qualified to judge.
I had to admit I had never read it, she was a bit shocked and said I must, so I have ordered it
Fortunately/unfortunately this lady is very married other wise I would be making a fool of myself over her..
Two questions:-
Has anyone here read the book? - what did they think? (It is on the site, but not a lot about it)
Taking as read that Black Beauty is the greatest, what are your nominations for the 2nd place rosette?

I haven't read it, but it lurks in my staggering tbr pile....may have to move it closer to the top (how close will depend on your review ) While your glamorous lady might have read a lot of books, the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia can make book that's nice look like the Greatest of All Time Re ranking....how can you really choose? For me, there are some that are superlative, but which one I would pick for tops would depend on my mood at the time the question was asked! Looking at strictly British titles, it's impossible not to mention National Velvet, but there are other gems among lesser known writers, like Vian Smith's The Minstrel Boy or The Lord Mayor's Show.

I haven't read it either, I looked at the book on line and it is from the 40's so I really think I might like it!! Currently rereading all the E Nesbit books so I'm very much in that timeline at present. The hardback book I saw had a nice cover and was also very expensive - however I think we should all read it now somehow!!

Well I have read it now. It is a very charming book, beautifully presented with nice illustrations. Bonny and his master Ken really love each other and are good characters, but it is all over the place although well written and gripping - could have made 4 or 5 books. I can see why though if you were given it at the right time by the right person you might love it forever, mainly because of its brave, kind horse hero
