Good luck Trixiepony. I found it too hard to concentrate when my Dad was ill.. did a lot of simple knitting instead. Thanks Claire.

Oh dear Trixie sorry to hear your mum is poorly again. Kidney stones are very painful, I know cos my dad had one a while back. Hope they get it sorted soon and she makes a speedy recovery. No worries if you are too busy or stressed out to join in. But if you feel you do want to you could just pick 3 or 4 books instead of 8-10. That goes for everyone. It's up to each individual how many books they choose. It's a challenge in the sense that we each try and finish our own list, not a competition to see who can do most. Yep I do give out virtual rosettes but its just a bit of fun. And everyone who finishes their challenge gets a shiny virtual gold cup. Careful you don't faint with excitement!!

I am quite excited I have been a bit lazy with the reading and need a bit of motivation. I have ordered a couple of books I am fairly sure I have never read among the rereads (the Chill Valley Hunt trilogy) so I shall have those for the challenge. I have a vast unread pile of non horse books too but I am enjoying reliving my youth.

Love the Chill Valley trilogy! They were my first foray into Pullein-Thompson territory.
Re revisiting childhood.....lol....we all started there. It's a slippery slope when you start collecting....you find so many "new" old authors. My original plan was just to replace the handful of really tatty paperbacks I had from my childhood with nice hardcover copies. That was....errr....several hundred books ago.

I think my first PT may have been "A Pony to School" - I bought it at the local post office which had a few paperbacks in a rack. It was a bit yellowy and looking at the editions I think it may well have been a remnant of the older editions before the armadas which made up most of my childhood were issued. Anyway I liked the Christina and Augusta series as well and I will try to get those next. I think because I was a quick reader in those days I particularly liked series. Though not all....

I came to the PTs only as an adult, when I started collecting....my local equestrian book dealer in Cambridge (that's Massachusetts, in the US), had the Chill Valley trilogy in the J.A. Allen editions.
For whatever reason, the PTs didn't seem to see much print here in the US....now, Joanna Cannan, their mother, had both her mysteries and her first pony book, Pony for Jean, published here. Come to think of it, I got the US edition of Pony for Jean, lured by the lovely Anne Bullen illustrations, at the same dealer...possibly the same day! Always hit or miss as to what gets published in another country....the first book K.M. Peyton wrote, as a teenager, made it into print here, and Vian Smith's work was particularly beloved by librarians and children (and me!). Go figure.
I read tons of series as a child too, for the same reason....there was always another book waiting for you when you finished....for me, mostly horses and mysteries!

Sorry Clare, I think I may have to site this one out, if it not one thing then it's anther, you will hardly believe it, as you know mum is sick and is still in hospital but it looks like she may get out soon and what do I go and do? I get shingles so I'm now itchy trying not to scratch my self, and to keep from spreading it to mum as she's still weak, it's on my forehead so I look a freak, any one got a circus?.

Oh no, how awful for you. Everyone says shingles are awful and I remember chicken pox being bad enough as a kid. Nearly scratched myself apart despite being covered in calamine lotion. Hope you feel better soon and don't pass it on. I can never remember whether you need to have had chickenpox to get shingles or if you can't get shingles if you have had chickenpox

Oh dear Trixiepony you are going through a bad time lately. No need to worry about the challenge. Just concentrate on getting yourself better. Sending healing thoughts to you and your mum xx
Not as bad as shingles, but everyone here has come down with a stomach bug so I'm typing this from my sick bed!

EEEK!!! Only five days of May left to go!! Time does fly Claire, can we get an idea of what we're planning? Any suggested categories? All free choice? Pairings for the book/recommendation/swap/whatever pairs decide? (It's going to hit 90 here today, can you tell I'm in summer-mode? )

Pairings for the book/recommendation/swap/whatever pairs decide? (It's going to hit 90 here today, can you tell I'm in summer-mode? ) I'll try to get something sorted out shortly. Haven't had much time lately due to work and then catching a stomach bug! But hopefully I can catch up soon. I think we'll probably go for free choice plus the bookswap/recommendation thing and we also usually try and get one modern book in the list just to keep us old fogies on our toes. Its still bloomin winter here. Only 8C this afternoon and rain chucking it down. It seems odd starting a summer reading challenge when we haven't even had spring yet up in Northern England! (Sorry about the weather moan Susan but I'm afraid you opened the flood gates lol.)
