I follow a few book related things on Facebook and I got inspired by this idea . basically Claire pairs someone up with someone else and they recommend a book for that person. Obviously it has to be nothing rare if it's a physical book.
I thought it would bring us closer as a forum and people could discover new books.
Other categories that I have thought of is that we could include an author that has died since the year 2000 (so that includes the PTs, Patricia Leitch, Dick Francis that I can think of).
I know that I am a little early but I know that if I wait until we are discussing the actual summer challenge I will have forego forgotten!

Fun ideas, garaj! I was actually thinking about the summer challenge too, eyeing my tbr pile Maybe we could start earlier this year, Claire? More of a nice, leisurely hack than the usual Derby time?

Summer? Crikey, dunno what it's like where you and susan are garej, but its still winter up in the chilly North of England! Good ideas though. I'll certainly mull them over. Yes, maybe we could start a little earlier and thus have longer to get through the books. Maybe this year is the one I will finish them all! I'm glad to know people are thinking about the Summer Reading Programme (think I'll shorten that to SRP!) hopefully we will have lots of people eager to join in again this year. Maybe we could even do the pairing up idea before the SRP? BTW I think senility must finally be taking over or else I'm turning into an alcoholic. Just checked my post for typos and realised I had written 'eager to join GIN' instead of 'eager to join in' !!!

Oh the summer or in my case winter reading challenge, are all ways a fun thing, The recommending of books sound a good idea, I have only a small space for pony books now but still have a good lot. Should it be our own book, we will have to put down a list of what we have if that's the cas. Or if it's something we have to get we need time to try to trace down a cheep copy to get.

Ha! You don't know what weather IS! I had 5" of snow on April 3rd and followed it up with another 5" on April 4th. If you live somewhere it snows more in the spring than most places get in the winter, you're ALWAYS thinking of summer

Perhaps if everyone recommended one book they thought the others had n't read that they had enjoyed themselves and one of those had to be one of your summer books? Not to easy to combine novelty with obtainable, especially with some of the experts on here...

It's forecast for snow on the high ground here actually! We do often get in April and it has been known to snow in June occaisionally. I don't think it gets as cold here as you get susan but at least you get summers. We've only had 2 here (Northern England) in the last decade! I try not to think of summer in case I blink and miss it lol. Oh dear this is turning into a weather moan. And as Trixie says it's a Winter reading challenge for her so the weather doesn't really come into it. Just an excuse for a rant - we Brits are obsessed with the weather its NOT a cliche! Back to the book recommendation / book swap. We could either physically swap books we owned with our partner or just recommend one for them to buy. As Garej says nothing too rare or expensive tho. If anhyone else has any suggestions for the book swap or reading programme please post here.

There is a couple of drawbacks to physically swapping books is that some people may not like giving out their address. Also on many forums that I am part of anyone under 16 is required to ask their parents permission (I don't think that we have many people on this forum under that age but just in case) before giving out their address. Also some people may object to posting internationally due to the additional expense.
At least if someone recommends a book then it's up to the buyer if they wish to purchase from an international seller.

Maybe just pair people off and leave them to figure it out? That way it could be swap, or a recommended book that someone will buy (for themselves) or even a "tell me what to read next from my staggering tbr pile", or any combination of the above. Pairs can do whatever back and forth messages they need to via IM and include the titles in the lists they give to Claire for the challenge. Rocket science it's not....I think with a little understanding and give and take we can manage

Well said Susan. Just do whatever you feel comfortable with, swap or recommend. Now the question is how are we going to pair people off haha. Also do people fancy doing this as a separate thing to the challenge (instead of the May reading group for example) or would you rather leave it as part of the challenge?

I'd say leave it for the challenge, which we were looking to start in June anyway, right? It's going to take some time for people to figure it out and get books and next week is May! (It doesn't feel like it today.....upper 30s to lower 40s for highs....brrr)
I think I'd suggest pairing people off asap, for that reason, just to give them time to get on with it. Re how to pair....lol..no idea. Write everyone's names on slips of paper and draw out of a hat?
Edited to say, didn't we include one book in last year's challenge as part of the reading group for one of the summer months, so people who didn't really want to do even a mini challenge could join? Maybe we could do it again this year and this could be one of those, if you see what I mean

Yep I think we did have 1 book on the challenge which we all did, though I can't remember what! You're probably right Susan it would take a bit too long to organise it all for May. As to choosing partners possibly alphabetical would be the easiest, but of course we'd need people to register/put their names down first. Glad you have opened up a chance for me to moan about the weather. It's even worse here. Down to 0.5C today and forecast minuses for tonite (which I think is low 30s in farenheit.) Its been snowing and hailing every day this week! Never known such a cold April tho we did have a freakishly hot day in the middle of it. Weather is totally bonkers here nowadays!

LOL...I went back and looked at the 2015 thread, and the common book was the one I sent copies of...Dark Sunshine. (Brain like a sieve these days!)
Weather totally freakish here too....frost on the grass this morning, and frost advisory again tonight
Re pairing up.....well, six are on now (you, me, garej, Trixie, tintin, kunuma). You could go alphabetical now, and just pair people up as they posted later chronologically...i.e. the next two people who want to be paired are in fact a pair. It'll save headaches of trying to remind people that they need to speak up, and the people who have already done so can get on with it without waiting around!

Just stick names in a hat Claire! Can I say weatherwise that yesterday I was walking in a heavy snowstorm!!! Because the ground was warmer than the snow, when it stopped snowing the ground was steaming, it was like being in geyser land!!

Crikey snowing in Devon at the end of April!! And that steaming thing sounds bizarre like something out of Yosemite Park. Been snowing on and off here its bloomin horrible.
But back to the thread - if anyone else wants to do the Summer (Winter for Aussies) Reading Challenge this year please post here. There's not a set deadline but the earlier the better so we can arrange the book swap/recommendation

Maybe some of our books can be scanned and read on a computer or ereader, tablet, I like a paper book but I do have a bunch of ebooks and audio books. That way we can give a book to others and still keep our book.

I think we have 9 people on the list so far. I'll give it a few more days to see if anyone else puts their name down before organising things. I'm sure I can work something out if we get an odd number of people tho. Summer actually seems like a faint possibility now after a couple of lovely warm and sunny days. Hard to believe we had minus temps and snow only last week!

Not around me sadly....been cold and wet all week long. Rain this time instead of snow, but 38 degrees in May just stinks! Heading down to Washington, DC tomorrow, but even there the high will only be 58 tomorrow! (38 = 3.3, 58 = 14.4). Only doing a long weekend, so I'll probably be back before you start pairing people off!

I would love to have a proper go at the reading challenge this year (have a basket of stuff at ABE books I am about to take the plunge on) but I am not very sure about making a recommendation since I have a rather limited and dated knowledge at the moment. I would love to receive a recommendation though.
