Not sure how but we completely missed out a top 10 of ghostly pony stories! As it's Halloween season seems a good time to rectify this. Anyone have any favourites? Or do ghost stories not appeal?
I like the various ghostly stories of Eleanor Jones, and Angela Dorsey's Freedom series. Stealaway by KMP is also good.
Actually it's got me thinking this seems a much more modern trend. Influence of Harry Potter etc perhaps? Off the top of my head the only older pony books that feature a ghost i can think of off the top of my head are Black Hunting Whip and Spirit of Punchbowl Farm (both of which I love). Can anyone think of any more? Surely there must be some!

Yes Stealaway is a good one and Carolyn Henderson's Grey Ghost and Beside me are also very good.

The only older (and it's not that much older, only 1978) book I can think of is The Mystery of Pony Hollow (later printed as The Ghost Pony) by Lynn Hall I'm not all that into ghost horse books....as you say, they tend to be modern, and I think the fantasy aspect often feels forced. It's not that I don't like ghost stories generally...one of my favorites from childhood is The Ghost in the Swing by Janet Patton Smith (and if you check the prices, you'll see why I'm sooooo very glad I never let go of my copy!). Almost forgot to add.....I love The Black Hunting Whip, haven't yet read Spirit of Punchbowl, but am looking forward to it....so I suppose it's more the modern ghost horse book that doesn't do it for me

I do like ghost stories. Used to read all the M. R. James classics. I like quite a few of the modern ones too but I agree with Susan that the ghost element sometimes seems forced (one example is the ghost horse in the pony Club Secrets series - it just seems a bit of a pointless addition.) Susan, I am glad you are enjoying the other Monica Edwards books after not liking Wish for a Pony. Spirit of Punchbowl Farm is excellent.

I'm itching to read Spirit, but I want to read them in order I've been mostly reading books I DON'T intend to keep, part of my "read and weed" project. Made an exception for the summer challenge, but trying to keep on track. I'd like to get as much cleared as possible before the snow flies, because the prospect of having to take donations to the library in winter, if it's anything like last winter, in 7 feet of snow in temps that are 30 degrees below freezing....brrr. So not appealing.
