In Theodora and the Chalet School, it says the girl has been expelled from a school after an episode of bareback riding. The author probably did'nt know much about horses, that does'nt seem quite right. Does bareback occur in many pony books/is it ever seen as stupid/dangerous?

The most well known story about bareback riding must be For Want of a Saddle by CPT in which the 2 kids have to ride bareback cos they can't afford a saddle. In fact the theme of not having much money/not being able to afford a saddle is probably what is associated most with bareback riding, in pony books rather than it being dangerous. I think it's probably considered dangerous by non-horsy people tho which could explain the school story episode. The kids in The Trick Jumpers do their act bareback cos its considered more dangerous and exciting to the audience. Jumping can be a bit tricky without a saddle til you get used to it but I can't say I felt unsafe when I used to sometimes ride bareback

Funnily enough bareback riding occurs in The Wild Boy and Queen Moon which I've just read. The boy rides his mare with just a head collar, no saddle or bridle. Of course in true pony book style he does it effortlessly but I'm sure I would fall straight off I've seen various clips on You Tube with people riding like that. Quite envious how they are at one with their horse.

I loved bareback riding til recently - now I can get on fine but swinging my leg off is actually a problem ... must work on stretching these middle aged muscles!
Oh, and I mean get on fine from a mounting block or with a legup, not from the ground!

Rally I think most of us (well the older ones) are in the same boat re. mounting and dismounting. Its not so bad when you are actually on the bloomin thing lol. All the riding places here require you to mount from a block, it's a health and safety issue I should think. Is it the same in the USA? I find dismounting the hardest. i was quite chuffed last time I rode and managed to dismount in one go. I sometime get a leg stuck on the cantle for a while which is slightly embarassing I did quite a lot of bareback riding as a child. It was nice on the rounder ponies but if you had one with a bony spine - ouch!

I think it's only seams dangerous to school high ups, there's probably a roll that your not a loud even near the horse with out saddle bride and your hard hat and safety boots, my gess is thay where taking horses back to paddock and jumped on with out shock hora there saddles bridles and not a hard hat in site. Hands up all that did this dangers thing LOL.

Oh crikey yes, lots of times. Didn't wear a riding hat very often I'm afraid, except when I went to the posh riding school! That was back in the days before health and safety!

Well, back to mounting bareback, it actually is quite easy. Just check out this video:
Hahaha not in a million years! I mean, I am sure there is a knack and you can learn to use the physics/momentum of your motion rather than just hauling up with brute force, but no way is it as easy as that young lady makes it appear!

I never managed to mount bareback without a leg up....never mattered the size of the horse/pony either...I think fear of hurting them just made me even more clumsy I rode bareback a lot as a kid...at a livery stables, where I worked in exchange for rides, and at a riding school camp....they even had had us jump small courses bareback, it was a blast!

Thanks for the vid Rallycairn. Haha no way could I do that in a million years! Mind you I probably have at least 20 years on the girl. Also it looks a very quiet horse.
I didn't do any bareback jumping but when I was getting jumping lessons at a posh-ish riding school many years ago we did jump without stirrups, without reins, sometimes with arms folded, etc, to get our balance better. I'm sure I must have fallen off a lot!

I often ride Harry bareback if i'm just schooling in the field...has more to do with being too lazy to tack up and as he's currently living out naked to scrape all the mud off him! He's lovely and round and not too big in terms of getting on although we both prefer me standing on the water trough to mount as the vaulting these days is like a bad scramble up a wall!

Bareback on a nice round pony looks so comfy. I've never done much of it and always felt unsafe and never got the hang of vaulting...

Nice pic he looks lovely and comfy. And yeah I'm with you on the lazy angle, also means you don't have to clean saddle lol He's not too big in terms of getting on although we both prefer me standing on the water trough to mount as the vaulting these days is like a bad scramble up a wall! Just wait til you get to my age haffy

we did the without stirrups jumping at my riding school too....I found bareback to be much easier...I think because a horse is squisher and easier to grip than a leather saddle!

I used to jump without reins, bareback, without stirrups. Also we used to jump facing the tail, but with someone leading. Or with two of us on the horse (bareback) the one on the back grabbed hold of the rider's torso like as if I was on a motorbike. Of course this is pre health and safety days, I doubt that anyone would allow us to face the tail these days.

In my extremely limited riding experiences, think there was quite a lot of health and safety and sadly never even got to cantering let alone jumping (IIRC I had some difficulties with rising to the trot). I think a mounting block was always used, though you may have been required to take your feet out of the stirrups for some exercises in the indoor school.

During the Met Police Mounted Ride at Olympia, they remove their saddles whilst cantering round, then hold them with one hand whilst riding bareback, all in synch with each other!

Wonder if is on youtube? I'm sure a pony book I've read mentioned something like that - or it might have been cavalry riders doing it. Could have been one of the JPT pony club books perhaps.

There's quite a bit of bareback riding in my book "Dare to Dream". The story itself was inspired by a friend of mine and her pony, as seen in this video:
She grew up doing a lot of bareback riding because her family didn't have much money and couldn't afford enough saddles for all 3 girls. Being the youngest she often missed out and was competing in lead-rein classes age 5 without a saddle.
Not that her sisters are any less talented without a saddle, here's her eldest sister voluntarily riding a Puissance bareback (everyone else had saddles but she thought bareback would be more fun to watch)
