I read it a while back but just got another copy so might give it another go as can't remember it all that well. Was it about a girl who for some reason hated the pony she was given cos it was a bit of a wreck and wasnt going to look after it (nasty girl) but for some reason changed her mind.

Thats the one. She had a "top " Pony at a poncey yard "RED ROBIN" her Dad went bust and they had to sell up and she was without a pony and the farmer found a neglected pony at a Sale. He bought it for her, but, she wasnt intreasted because "skinny rabbit" wasnt top notch.

I remember reading it. It is a good book for young pony book readers.

I liked Pony in the Dark although I had a big lump in my throat when reading it!

On the whole, I've never been able to get into the books where a child doesn't like his/her pony...just so alien! I Had Two Ponies lurkes in my tbr pile, but the person who passed it on to me mentioned that the girl doesn't like either of her ponies....unnatural!!
The other two that come to mind are A Horse Like Mr. Ragman by Rachel Rivers-Coffey and Pidgie's Suprise by Jeanne Mellin (ironically, the person who illustrated so many of Nancy Caffrey's books).
I did like Lucky Purchase by Pamela Macgregor-Morris though, and Sire Unknown by Marjorie Reynolds, so I suppose it's how it's presented by the author.
