What pony book scenes do you find scariest/most disturbing for any reason? Jean's dangerous ride through the snow in Phantom Horse, towing the pony with only a vague idea where to go. The place in Jaqueline Rides for a Fall where Pat pricks her hands removing and replacing barbed wire to open a gate, makes me wince. The quarry accident is pretty horrific. Also the attempt at making a firebreak in Fire in the Punchbowl.

I find scenes where horses are abused the most disturbing. Six ponies, Cobblers Dream and Sweet Rock for a start.

I agree with Rosie, horse/animal abuse is the most disturbing for me. The scene of animal carnage in Ponies in the Forest for example still haunts me and I read it as an adult. There is a very disturbing element of child abuse in one horse story which unfortunately I can't recall the title of at mo, its an American story, 50s or 60s, maybe one of our US forum members will recall the title. I also find the father's treatment of his daughter in Pony From Fire by Sheila Chapman quite unsettling. Oh and not to mention the pervert in one of Dorian William's Wendy books who prowls the girls rooms at night!!!

The multiple deaths in Gillian Baxters Bracken series. The box crash, the plane crash, the death of the riding instructor, all so casually told. I also found Rennie Goes Riding very disturbing; the title is so innocent but the book contains some horrible events. Many of Mary o Hara's books had a horrible fascination for me as a child.

Of course Red Pony wasn't written for a child/teenage audience but for adults. Strange that if there is a pony or horse involved people instantly think it's a children's book. Black Beauty was also written for an adult audience.

Excellent point Fizz. The most disturbing horse story I have read was also written for adults. A Horse's Tale by Mark Twain (yes him!) - it was written to highlight cruelty to animals at the time. There is an extremely horrific episode where the horse ends up in the bull ring. I have written a review of the book here: ponybooks.proboards.com/thread/1237?page=1

The scene where the hounds kill the elderly ladies dog in...was it We Hunted Hounds?....probably more sad than scary, but still disturbing.

Think the dog is killed in The Impossible Horse, but there may well be one killed in We Hunted Hounds as well. Yes Susan, it is horrible, I'd forgotten that one.
