I don't THINK this one is obscure, I just can't remember it -- what's the book in which 3 kids on bicycles (two brothers and a sister, I think, and the sis is drawn to ponies from the beginning but can't admit it because of loyalty to her older brother and to the bet) race in trekking holiday fashion to pit bikes against ponies? And of course one of the pony riders is secretly drawn to riding bikes instead? And of course both parties have their misadventures and pros and cons of ponies vs. bikes.

The only 2 books with the scenario of bikes versus ponies which I can think of off the top of my head are Horseshoes and Handlebars by M. E. Atkinson and Bobbie's Sponsored Ride by Justine Furminger. I don't think its the former tho as there were only 2 boys on bikes and 2 girls on horses (as far as I can recall). Can't remember much about the other book, except that the bike people were trying to sabotage the pony people. Is it a UK or USA book Rally?

As you know Claire I have a copy of Bobbie's sponsored ride it said on the back. When money is needed to repair the church roof Bobbie and her two friends, Laura and Yasmin, hit on the idea of a sponsored ride. The ride is fraught with difficulties, however, when Ned Hardy and his gang run a rival sponsored ride on bicycles. Bobbie and her pony group have to pit their wits and skill against the obnoxious Ned, who is as mean on his nick as he is in the showring.

Horseshoes and Handlebars sounds right, and I could be wrong on the details. Will check it out. Thanks, both of you.

I've got a 'what the hell is the title of the book whereβ¦' a girl who is pretty much a professional child rider who's sick of it and goes to stay somewhere where there are horses and doesn't want anything to do with them but changes her mind and enjoys riding again?
Any ideas? I can't find it in my book collection but I'm sure I've got it somewhere! IT'S DRIVING ME NUTS!!!! Tell me it exists- I'm tired of having dreams where I find a great shop full of old pony books and then waking up and realising I'm living in Canberra!

Hi cally. Could it be Show Jumping Summer by Catherine Carey? I think there are a few others with similar scenarios but thats the only one that springs to mind at the moment. Here's the web page for author and book to check: catherinecarey.ponymadbooklovers.co.uk/

One of the early saddle club books has this story line too - can't remember which one, but the first one in which kate appears.
