Hi all we started compiling a list of Christmas reads a while back on another thread. If we expand it a bit we can also do a poll and maybe choose one of the best ones as a reading circle read over the Christmas period. So far we have:
THE CHRISTMAS PONY BY SYLVIA GREEN
THE CHRISTMAS PONY BY WENDY DOUTHWAITE
ISSIE'S CHRISTMAS PONY BY STACY GREGG
THE CHRISTMAS COLT BY MALLORY STEVENS
CHRISTMAS AT SILVER LAKE BY COLEEN HUBBARD
ONE FROSTY CHRISTMAS BY LAURA HESSE
CHRISTMAS HORSE BY GLENN BALCH
PONY FROM THE FARM BY MARY GERVAISE
WINTER PONY BY JEAN SLAUGHTER DOTY
WHITE WINTER BY ELEANOR HELME
SLEIGH BELLS FOR WINDY FOOT BY FRANCES FROST
TIZZ PLAYS SANTA CLAUS BY ELISA BIALK
A GOOD CHRISTMAS FOR RIDING BY ELIZABETH WHITBREAD
GIFT HORSE BY DANDI DALEY MACKALL
MAGIC PONY: SNOW BANDITS BY ELIZABETH LINDSAY
ANN GOES HUNTING BY JOHN SMYTHE
HORSE OF FIRE BY PATRICIA LEITCH
THE INTRUDERS BY VERONICA WESTLAKE
FURY AND THE WHITE MARE BY ALBERT J. MILLER
If anyone can think of any others please add them below.

Didn't someone suggest Ponies Plot by C. Northcote Parkinson?
Also one we've done before, All Change/The Hidden Horse by JPT.
Ponies of Cuckoo Mill Farm by Catherine Harris is also Christmas oriented.

I can't recall Ponies Plot having a Christmas element but then again my memory is dreadful!

I had a hunt round, and found it was Desert Orchid who mentioned Ponies Plot as a Christmas read, because of the chapter "Brighty's Christmas" (it's the last post in the "Next Author" thread)...I haven't read the book myself, but I do have a copy. I love that the author is also the wit who came up with The Parkinson Principle: that work expands to fill the time alloted for it's completion

There's Christmas in Jill's Gymkhana too, i've got another in mind too but can't recall a title or Author [helpful!]. I'm sure it involves a non horsy family living on a barge.
ps sorry can't log in this morning for whatever reason

Now All Change and Ponies of Cuckoo Mill Farm are always my must Christmas reads, also I think it's Jill;s Gymkhana that is Christmassy and of course there is a Christmas to celebrate with the dreadful Esmonds! lol

lol Nothing like saying what someone just said!! My excuse is having a veeeery bad day but this time there isn't an animal involved! I'ts the Cuckoo Mill one with the barge! Often wondered if that's where I got the whole idea of wanting to live on a narrowboat!

Kunuma are you having log in problems too...?
I think we did All Change and Black Hunting Whip (that can be added to list!) as Christmas reads previously.
Can anyone remember if The Pony Winter by Gill Morrell is Christmassy?

Trixie Belden and the Mystery in Arizona takes place at Christmas time and is set at a southwestern U.S. "dude" ranch (where tourists go to play cowboy/cowgirl). Not as much riding as it should have, but still a pretty horsey entry in the series and all about Christmas and Christmas vacation in a "different" setting from the usual snowy, wintry Christmas-card sort of place.
Off the top of my head, I think Pony Winter takes place after Christmas, with Christmas only figuring as the chance for the main character to finally get some nice jods and other kit, and not have to ride in sweatpants any more. But I'm not completely sure, though when I went to pull out my copy to check I realized I would start an avalanche of pony books if I tried to get to it, so I didn't.

Yeah i think you could be right about Pony Winter rally so will leave it off the list. I don't know if I would include Jills Gymkhana either cos really there wasn't a huge amount of Christmas stuff in it.
Any more suggestions please post soon as I will be putting the poll up shortly.

Are we going to be voting for favorite books, or picking a Christmas reading group title (or both)? Both - I hope! We could choose the read that got the most votes but it also depends on available copies/rarity etc. Also I'd really like to pick something that is mainly focused on Christmas rather than just has 1 Christmas episode, much as the episode may be enjoyable - but will take everyone's preferences into consideration. As we were a bit behind with Wild Pony, we can do this one over the Christmas holidays when hopefully all the fuss has died down and we can relax with a drink and a mince pie.

Sounds good to me...it's been a hectic pre-Christmas, so looking forward to the down time. Just addressed the Christmas cards...now I have to write them I'm game to read anything I have or can get....right now, of the books mentioned (that we haven't already done in past years!), I have Chrismas Horse/Balch, Winter Pony/Doty, White Winter/Helme, Sleigh Bells for Windy Foot/Frost, Fury and the White Mare/Miller, Ponies of Cuckoo Mill Farm/Harris and Ponies Plot/Parkinson. I think some of the others (including the Trixie Beldon) are available as ebooks, so they'd be no problem for me either.

Poll added. If I've left out anything apologies, in a rush as usual!
Unfortunately susan I dont have many books from your list. I do have Fury and the White Mare, Ponies of Cuckoo Mill Farm & Ponies Plot. I also have The Christmas Pony by Sylvia Green, including a spare copy anyone can have, possibly the Wendy Douthwaite, but I'll have to double check on that, Plenty of Ponies and The Intruders. (I have a scan of The Intruders which I could send to anyone who wants to do this one - its a funny read.)
Plenty of Ponies and the Cuckoo Mill Farm & The Christmas Pony are probably the easiest ones to get hold of, in the UK at least.

Well after much consideration I'd like to propose The Ponies of Cuckoo Mill Farm as our Christmas holiday read. I know that a few people already have it, its not too hard to find (in UK at least) and I can lend anyone a copy if they need it. Also its got a few votes in the poll. Hopefully everyone will agree and I can get a thread started up for it later today.

So hard! I got Ponies of the Bunts and Ponies and Caravans by M.M. Oliver, Lost Lorrendon by Mabel Esther Allan, Mystery Clouds the Canyon by Annette Turngren, The Darling Buds of May by H.E. Bates, Tea with the Black Dragon by R.A. McAvoy and The Bassumtyte Treasure by Jane Louise Curry (the last two, though, are books I have already read, but I wanted copies of my own!).

Speaking of Catherine Harris....I didn't want to post yesterday, because it hadn't yet come, but a book I ordered for myself finally landed in my mailbox....They Rescued a Pony (with the nice, not orange cover)!
I've not read it before...I didn't realize it was a series when I bought Ponies of Cuckoo Mills (sigh).....I have to admit it's not the first time that's happened to me...I read Shirley Falkner Horne's series backwards...3, 2, 1!

Yes I must get round to replacing the awful orange coloured jackets with the nice ones. We Rescued a Pony is particularly hideous. The only one in the series I've got non-orange is To Horse and Away which I don't think was actually reprinted in the orange jacket!
Come to think of it, I think I read Ponies of Cuckoo Mill first as well. It seems to work well as a stand alone.
