Our local council has to save £92,000 over the next year or so, and so the proposal was to close 3 libraries across the county. Unfortunately one of them was the one in the next village. This village is one of the largest in Wales, so it should have a library. The library is well used, with a mother and toddler club and a book club. Admittedly I have not used it as much as I should have done, but I have never seen it empty. I used to use the internet there until I got a smart phone.
Anyway, this week I got involved with a protest outside the guildhall in the main town. It was well attended with the local councillor attending (personally I dont like the man, but it was great that he came along), the local press, a radio station and the local tv. Several children from the village where the library is local school came along, along with several members of the book club. There was a big banner saying "Save xxxx Library". I was there representing the Unite Wrexham Community, our main member had a banner saying "Cut the Mayor not libraries". The Mayor has spent over £10,000 in flowers alone in the past year, and it was thought that he should spend the money a bit more wisely, and pay for his own flowers! There was a meeting to discuss the library future but I didnt go in it.
Anyway (another one!) the whole point is that our protest worked. The 3 libraries faced with closure are not going to be closed, however all 12 libraries across the county are going to have their opening hours cut.
I dont have any photos of me taking part in the protest however. I did appear on the telly, albeit you can see the back of me. Sadly the local news is on iplayer.
