(sorry if this has already been done, but a quick search didn't show anything) What was the pony book that started you on your road to madness? Unfortunately my memory gets a bit fuzzy, but for me it was either Black Beauty or Justin Morgan Had a Horse. I remember enjoying both of them although the Morgan book made a bit more of an impression (it may have had something to do with my age or lack thereof at the time )

I can't honestly remember! I had a lot of the Pullein-Thompson sisters books and Black beauty.

The first one I ever read was.....
The Horse Whisperer.
But that was a good few years before I even considered sitting on a horse!!
I think the next one I read after that was Seabiscuit (the Hillenbrand book), quickly followed by Black Beauty.

Gosh, yes, trixie, I forgot about Little Black; technically it was one of my brother's books, but of course I read it. What a gorgeous book it is, too.
Also, Gypsy from Nowhere by Sharon Wagner, and then a few years later finding the new pb editions with the additional two books in the trilogy.

Yes Trixie I loved Little Black when i was a kid, used to borrow it from the school library, recently found one in an Op shop (charity shop) for 50c. But my absolute favourite that had me hooked, I used to borrow it again from the school library every time it appeared on the shelves!! was Polly's Oats - Marc SimontManaged to track down a copy in the states but sadly it got lost in the post Luckily alibris refunded my money and I found another copy (exorbitant postage) and I still love it! As I got a bit older I became hooked on the 'Jill' books and still am....

Crikey you have good memories. I can't honestly remember the first pony book I read. Among the first ones were the Silver Brumby books, most of the earlier PT books, Jill, Jackie and the Elinore Havers books. But I honestly couldn't say what was first.
What age were you all at when you started reading them folks - did you read them before or after you started riding? I guess I was about 7 or 8 when I started riding and reading pony books, think I started both at the same time.

Probably my first pony book was Jill's Gymkhana and A Stable for Jill (it was a 2 in 1 book), but I read plenty of Enid Blyton books which had horses in prior to that.

Actually now Garej has jogged my memory I also think the Enid Blyton books featuring horses were the first ones I read with ponies in, even before I started riding. I especially remember the Circus books with Jimmy and Lotta in as Lotta was a circus rider. Not sure why I liked these so much as I don't even like circuses!

Mine were the penny and Sue and Penny and Pickle picture books by Viveka Ramstedt. I also had some by the donkey sanctuary. Non picture books my earliest were also the Enid Blyton circus ones Claire speaks off, Snowball the pony, janet Must Ride and Jill Enjoys her ponies which had been my mums. There were others too but these are the 2 that most stand out to me.

I think mine must have been Horse of Fire when I was 9/10. The cover intrigued me, especially as the rider's hair was the same colour as her horse (I've always wanted red hair). I'd read Black Beauty and The Little White Horse before that, but they didn't make me seek out other horsey books.

I absolutely can't remember. Have a vague feeling it might have been Wish For a Pony at age 8-9, but could have been anything really.

Iknow exactly which one mine was, it was Silver Brumby's Daughter - and before I read it I didn't even know what a brumby was - I watched wild horse films as a child and they were American so I thought wild horses were mustangs! That book made such an impression on me, to this day I adore the Silver Brumby books. My second was Jill's Gymkhana - and I can remember even at such a tender age wondering why someone with a cottage, stables and field was supposed to be poor!!Alos being somewhat astounded that her Christmas present was a blanket for her horse - that's what you put under a jute rug, not instead of!! lol

Lol I always thought that too - plus they had a 'daily' woman too who did the cleaning and what not. I think it was whats called genteel poverty

mine was "A Horse and His Boy" by C.S. Lewis. Then "Black Beauty", "My friend Flicka', "The Silver Brumby", the Pullein Thompson sisters and the Jill books. I remember the days when I could go into the bookshop and buy a pony book with the money I saved from walking home instead of catching the bus. Now I can't even find a bookshop, although that one on my school bus stop still exists!

I kicked off with Black Beauty. Next, I read the Jill books. I started with 'A Stable For Jill' and was seriously impressed at how Jill and her newfound holiday friends started up and ran a riding stable as a commercial business, and also bought and sold ponies at a profit - and not a single adult in sight to spoil things. I was also taken with how confident Jill was and loved the way the books jogged along. Was I envious of all that child power. My oldest daughter later loved the same books, even though she saw Jill as arrogant and the stories as far fetched. Those books simply had something special that hooked the reader.

A Stable for Jill has always been my favourite Jill book. I always loved books where kids ran riding schools and thought thats what I would do when i grew up!!! I agree with your daughter tho that I saw Jill as arrogant in some of the later stories.

I'd forgotten all about Little Black. No sign of it in my collection now so must have gone years ago. However, when I was going through some old infant school books in most of them I'd written a story about a horse, Big Red, or a pony, Little Black. This must be where I got my inspiration from so would have read that aged about 6. There's a used copy going cheap on amazon. Even just seeing the cover jogged a memory. Anyone read Alpha Centauri by Robert Seigel? For some reason my husband finds the idea of this book hilarious and wanted to know if anyone else had heard of it! He can't talk - he refuses to part with his childhood rent-a-ghost books!!

"Dora at Follyfoot" by Monica Dickens: my dad may have reviewed it and I found it on the book case. I've got a feeling it was called "Little Grey Pony", possibly by Elinore Havers, was next? A crippled girl gets a pony to pull her around in a bath chair or something. "Only One Pony" was also one of my firsts, then the Jill series, but not in order.
