Hi all, starting the Sept author now as I will be away at beginning of Sept. Please discuss here anything relating to Diana Pullein-Thompson, including best and worst books, favourite characters, human and animal. Also how do you think she compares to her 2 sisters? Is her style any different. There is a link below to a poll for favourite DPT books which we set up in the top 10s section a while back. A lot of you have already voted but you may want to change your votes if you have read more of her books since then, also some of the newer members will not have voted. The reading circle selection is The Hermit's Horse. Vote for your fav DPT booksReading Circle thread for The Hermit's Horse

Hi folks noticed we haven't had any discussion here so bumping it up a bit.
What do people think of DPT? How does she compare to her sisters? Do you have any fav DPT characters, human and equine?
I like her books tho I prefer Josephine's on the whole. I find both she and Christine are quite similar in tone, their books can be a bit downbeat and their heroines and heroes a bit negative. I think DPT is slightly less so than Christine in this regard. I think in a way she is the most innovative and thoughtful of the three.
One of my fav DPT characters is Christina from 3 Ponies and Shannan etc, which is rather strange as I normally prefer more working class type characters struggling with keeping ponies on a shoestring (as that was like my one experience!). I just think its clever how she turns the usual stereotypes on their head and makes the rich girl who has won lots of trophies and has a groom nice, and the more normal girl horrid. I also like Lynne from The ponyseekers as she is very caring and has a close bond with Candy.
I think out of all the sisters she is perhaps even more interested in relationships between people than that of a person and a horse. Like the relationships between the 2 girls in Friends Must Part, or the children's relationship with the Hermit in The Hermits horse or Lesley and the Lynton family. In some of her books (but not all) the horse element seems to take second string to these relationships.
Be interested to hear other people's views.

I like DPT and CPT books even though as you say they can be a bit downbeat sometimes but JPT are my favourites of the three.

Its funny, Joanna Cannan their mother was quite humourous in her books, and so was Jo, but the other 2 seemed to have completely bypassed the humour gene - maybe they took after their father!

I've not read as much of Diana's work as I have of her sisters, but there are a few of her books that have become favorites.....I Wanted a Pony, Janet Must Ride, Cassidy in Danger. A Pony to School is STILL in my tbr pile, I hope to read it this month (arrgghhhh.....this month is going too fast!) for my author-of-the-month book!

I just actually haven't read a single book by Diana, so I can't comment at all -- except to say I can't comment, lol! Some of her works do sound appealing, but I just hate to even crack into a whole new author when there are already so many other authors whose complete works (or a good sampling) I'd like to read at least once.

I am a big fan of the sisters, but like Christine's books best over all, then Diana, then Josephine (which seems to be bucking the trend here) Most of my very favourites are Christine's, I think the Augusta and Christina books are the best of Dianas, particularly "Pony to School" which is among my very favourites

Another fan of the Augusta and Christina books here. I like all 3 of the sisters fairly equally, it depends what mood I am in. My favourite characters are, not surprisingly, Augusta and Christina and Clown could be my favourite equine character from the books. I have enjoyed the Hermit's Horse for the reading group, which I hadn't read before. I also haven't read The Long Ride Home, Ponies on the Trail, and the Ponyseekers books. Are these any good?

My favourite is janet must ride, besides this the only one i really rate (off top of my head so may have forgotton something) is Pony To School. I don't really understand the affection people have for i wanted a pony or Three Ponies and Shannon if i'm honest. As a child i desperatly wanted 3 ponies and Shannon but could never find a copy until i was an adult (in fact this was the book that set me off collecting again!) but reading it was rather a let down after all that wanting lol.

You guys are funny, but for now, NO WAY . Too big a TBR pile already and like I said, I don't wanna break into a whole new-to-me author who was so prolific! After some more Josephine and Sue Berrisford, then I'll maybe get cracking on Diana. Oh wait -- I said I would do Romney Marsh soon - so what's a poor ponybookmad (and ponymadbooklover) girl to do? After JPT, and Berrisford, and Monica Edwards, and ....

I'm about 3/4 through A Pony to School....the author-of-the-month has pushed me to pick up the book that I'd actually original intended to read for LAST summer's challenge!

I've been having trouble getting on to the board for a while (my ocmputer, not your forum, but think I am fixed now. To be honest, the sisters run together a bit in my head. I like the Christina and Augusta series. I think Christina doesn't appear as a poor little rich girl, because she takes the mickey out of herself. Now some of those scenes with Shannon really are funny. One of my favourites not mentioned yet is "A Pony for Sale" about Martini. I quite liked that one, apart from the chapter about the horrible show jumping girl. But the section with the young girl who was overhorsed was fascinating.
What a shocking pair! Get reading immediately you two - by order of ponymadbooklovers!
Thanks Claire I have been following orders and have just finished the Augusta and Christina series, very enjoyable. Felt sorry for Christina and who would want that horrible groom Curtis looking after their ponies??? Have decided will keep reading DP/T as The pony seekers has just arrived in the post.
