I just accidentally caught this rather strange film on tv. It starred a very young Zac Efron and a rather nice chestnut. The boy's father wanted to make him into a baseball star so he could get a college scholarship, but the boy wanted to ride. Along comes an old failed trainer who will train both boy and horse (also a failure.) Now when I saw Derby I assumed racing. The trainer puts the boy over rustic show jumps. The nasty rich kid (obligatory cliche) trains over enviable show jumps. So I think derby must be some special show jumping event. Boy and horse are taken to a racecourse to qualify for the Derby. So it is a race. So why are they training over jumps? It turns out to be a full blown race with some hurdles in it. The boys competing are only 15 years old. The main theme of the film seems to be follow your dreams and work hard and you will get to where you want to be. Also don't be a spoiled rich kid, it doesn't pay. Apart from the confusion about horse related matters, the film was a nice way to while away a lazy Sunday afternoon. And that chestnut was a real looker!

Thanks for posting this vera. I've had this DVD for ages but never quite fancied watching as I thought it might be rubbish. But it doesn't actually sound too bad. May give it a go sometime (if only to check out the chestnut )

I couldn't stomach the part where it is implied that any horse just automatically bucks off any new rider -- just to test their sincerity, ya know. Otherwise, that's about the only Zac Efron movie or program I've seen, and I thought he was quite decent as a young actor.

Lol Rally, you do get some (unintentional) laughs in horsy films directed or written by non-horsy people. My personal favourite is in Flicka 3 where the useless riders suddenly begin performing dressage moves when the trainer (who incidentally is a cowboy who knows zero about dressage) plays country and western music to them! ;D If only it were that easy

I saw it a while back....it wasn't bad, as movies go. The people who made it had no clue what a derby was, but hey, it's Hollywood!
Real jumping derbies take place in a ring, like showjumping, but have more natural jumps...all the ones I've seen include a bank, in fact. Once upon a time, a loooong time ago, my cable company had one channel that used to telecast from Spring Meadows in Canada, where they have a derby course...it was really lovely to watch.

I think I saw this many moons back - wasn't too bad, as I recall, but I could have done without Zac Efron...!

Susan I used to love watching Spring Meadows and also the Nation's Cup. They do not seem to televise any horse sports anymore, which is a real pity.

We at least still get the Triple Crown races and then the Olympics, but not much else. 200 channels and nothing on, *sigh* Everything is reality shows . . . wait a minute! How about a horse reality show? Hmm, I think I'll make a separate thread on it.
