Can't wait to see it! I've got 3 pics of the Queen,2 framed, on horseback., in my bedroom. I met a woman at RDA one day who had worked as a stablehand/groom on one of the properties where she kept her ponies- lucky thing!

It was enjoyable, but I wanted to know more about the horses, it would have been good to know the breeding of the foals & the names of the retired horses.

I would have watched it but as most people on here know I can't stand that great lump Clare Balding who was presenting it (surely she isn't the only horsy person in the media - tho you'd think it as she's on everything remotely connected to horses) so I had to give it a miss!

;D Claire I knew you wouldn't be able to watch it! I gritted my teeth while she was on but I did enjoy the old B&W footage of the Queen riding her ponies. Loved the Highlands too. She has given quite a few of the older Highlands to charities that help disabled people.

One of the pics I have is of the Queen sitting on a black Fell or Dales' pony with Prince Edward's son and daughter on smaller ponies on leading reins. I'm not into racing as you know, and I too hope Claire Balding doesn't get too much face time!

Have to say that I have had CB up to the back teeth!! Especially since she decided to start pontificating on about dogs too! The thing that impressed me most of all was that at 87 she is so fit and active. Walking totally without a stick and still riding - wonder if she would be so healthy if she had had to rely on the NHS!!

I take it your talking about the Queen and not Clare Balding? ;D I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like CB. Thought I was being a bit intolerant until I found loads of people can't stick her - begs the question WHY is she on the TV so much. Bad enough the horses and racing but Crufts too?

I havent watched it (it's on my freesat box though) but I am beginning to hate Clare Balding too. Thought we wouldnt have her on Badminton now she's doing racing on Channel 4, but how wrong I was.

Not really about Her Majesty's passion for horses, but what about the reaction to her portrait?
I saw headlines about this horrid painting, opened up the internet pix, and didn't think it was this horrible unflattering abomination. In fact I felt a bit of license was taken in making her appear so upright in carriage and also figuratively "airbrushed" the age in her face a bit, but I thought that was to be expected completely and was license taken in a good way, resulting in a figure that appeared regal and powerful. The "bloke with a wig" comments were way overstated, I thought. What did you guys here think?

Which painting do you mean Rallycairn? The one where she is in red with a yellow background? If so, then it is pretty bad; the composition, colour & paint handling are all poor. Most of my students could do better (well of course with me teaching them!). Is it an official portrait or one some royalist hobbiest has done for fun? On another subject, why does every one hate Clare so much?

This is the portrait everyone has been moaning about: www.today.com/news/queens-new-portrait-dubbed-hideous-bloke-wearing-wig-6C10153218I agree with Rally, there's nothing wrong with it, in fact she looks quite friendly and approachable to me, like someones granny (which of course she is!) but at the same time somewhat regal. In fact I think its one of the best ones done of her in her older age. That one with the yellow background which fizz is talking about I agree is hideous. She looks like she has a false hand which is coming loose and has an enormous droopy bosom. Its awful! Why does no-one like Clare Balding? Don't get me started! She has completely zero personality, has an awful voice which really grates on me, is unnattractive (which wouldn't be a prob on its own but with the personality bypass and voice just makes up a competely off-putting package), got on TV through the 'old boys network' (her dad is a top trainer) not cos she has actually achieved anything and to top it all she is massively over-used, being on just about everything remotely horsy on many different TV channels (and as kunuma pointed out she's even graduated onto dogs with Crufts) so even if you liked her initially you would doubtless by getting sick of her by now. Anything else to add to the list...? ;D

The portrait is a bit cheesy but OK, certainly not as bad as the yellow one. If you do a google image search for Queen portraits, there are some really embarrassing ones.
do you think Clare got the job due to her family? I didn't think the Baldings would have that sort of connection. I thought more she was President of the Oxford Union & made connections with BBC people there. I don't mind her,, apart from the way she can talk down on the TV, but that is probably her remit. As for her looks, well she can't help that, & actually I find it refreshing that she is so successful when she isn't "brainless eye cany". I do agree she is being very much over used at the moment.

Yes, Claire's link is the one I read about. And now having browsed quite a few more of her portraits from recent years, I feel even more that it is a nice portrait. Love the inclusion of the corgis and doxies! Some people/media outlets just want to gripe and make noise, I guess.

Oh dear I think it's awful! I don't think the face is right somehow. My beef about Claire Balding is that she's on too much. Can't we have another presenter for a change?

Yeah Rosie has hit the nail on the head with CB she's just on too much. I was only slighltly irritated by her when she was just on the BBC racing but now she's everywhere she really gets up my nose. By the way I didn't mean to be 'lookist' (if thats a word), I'm certainly no supermodel myself! But I just thought it odd that someone who didnt have much personality OR looks could have made it so big. Brainless eye candy you can sort of understand, even if you dont approve! Just for fun - any suggestions for a different presenter of horsy programmes?

I think I'd like the commentator for the Olympics dressage and I think that was Judy Harvey. The trouble is she's probably far too busy training etc. It would have to be someone experienced who knew what they were talking about and preferably someone with a pleasing voice. Anyone decent with enough experience would probably need to be retired otherwise they would be too busy using their skills to ride/train/teach etc.

Poor Clare Balding. I hope she never comes on here! ;D But I also find her a bit irritating, especially now she is on everywhere. Before that I could take her or leave her.
A retired professional in any of the horsey fields would be the ideal choice for commenting on the programmes. After all that's what the footballers all do. Otherwise I'd quite like to see Martin Clunes present some of the programmes. He came across as quite personable in his 2 TV programmes about horses and he seems to care about horses as horses, rather than just objects in a competition.
